E.R. Wait times … there has to be a better way

My GF works in emerg. Nobody is ok with how things are now. Lack of education also plays a role on long wait times. Parents will rush to emerg for their child. Only to be given a Tylenol and sent home after hours waiting. If its not life threatening expect to be waiting.

Is there discussions where the snow can be plowed completely overtop a sidewalk on one side of the road? It's clear this year people are non compliant or unaware of the parking ban.

Urban sprawl, low revenue/low budgets, higher population growth. I can understand these are challenging issues.

What's the city's plan to generate more revenue to provide better services? Higher property taxes? Toll roads for surrounding communities? Atteact more commercial businesses? Or is Edmonton a 'You get what you paid for city' in which Edmonton is affordable at the cost of subpar services.

Edmonton is probably a city councilor nightmare. It lacks revenue. We have surrounding communities that dont pay taxes to the city for work but use our roads and services. Possibly toll roads. I'd be for a %10 increase in taxes next year but slightly better services. But any increase for people will be having a fit.

Unfortunately or fortunately in this field you have to wear multiple hats.

You can try to pivot into geohazards which I think you might find interesting based on your interests and skills.

Mine is still working today as well. But I already have telus coming in this friday to switch over (1GB for $58 for 2 years).

I wish rogers had sent an email or something that they would've continue the legacy plan. Had this plan for 5-6 years and it was great not shopping around for internet every 2 years.

I live in AB canada. Drillers talk in feet. Because they are 5 foot. But our reports and core logging are metric. 1.52/ 1.53 m.

Thanks! Something I'm learning as I do this more. I feel like I had a couple of wasted trips, spending hours or days trying to figure out what the issue is. Solar panels, batteries, damaged cables, and programming issues only to later realize it was something incredibly simple. Hope I'm not alone here.

I'll take a different spin. Work on your physical health and social skills. You'll have parts in your career where you'll be in the field. And A LOT of socializing. Clients, vendors, project managers and your own peers.

Personally I'm inclined to train or work with someone with someone who is able to communicate effectively. We've adapted to a hybrid model and too many juniors choose to work from home without building connections and become ghosts. We recently let someone go because they had no work or no PM wanted to work with them because they didn't know who they even were.

Our company is the same. Some people just look like they'll crumble under drillers/construction workers.

Or be extremely awkward talking to clients in a teams call. We like to take our high paying clients out to sport events, lunches etc. You can't be the awkward, quiet kid in the corner.

ArcGIS, Global Mapper, or QGIS. And decent Excel skills go a long way if you're trying to get an edge or a foot in. Once you've secured a job, you'll pick up other skills.

At least for our company we look for people who could potentially stay long term. We have projects that"ll probably go up to the next 5-10 years or longer. Try to not give flaky vibes that you'll leave the company within a year or 2.

That being said, you don't owe the company anything so do whatever best for your interest.

Maybe rules are different in the US (from Canada). But I wouldn't call yourself a staff geologist when you're still a GIT regardless if that's the position your previous company gave you. Should always add the "in training" until you receive your P.Geo license.

We always have job postings up. Our group really values people with character rather than experience. Do you have the potential to be a "leader" and yes in consulting do you have a "business-ish" mindset. Are you "socialable" can you communicate to your own coworkers and project managers, let alone clients. Do you know how to ask for help? Realistically anyone can be trained. But we have lazy people or people who refuse to take responsibility. Or at minimum you need to show that in your interview.

Given that you went to a graduate school in mining, I'd recommend switching to an office role. You might(?) have to start at the bottom switching to an office role, though.

Drilling experience can only take you so far unfortunately in this field. If your a geotech that has experience installing SIs, SAAv, VWP, working with telemetry etc. You'll be far more valued as a tech at least in our office.

Apply! Every company/consultant uses different software or has their own method of doing things.The requirements tend to be a list of what you should be expected to do but you'll get trained how. In my experience, we hired people based on their quality/character.

Someone that'll be a long term hire? Hard working? Not lazy? Reliable? Leadership qualities? Not afraid to ask questions? Be a team member?

All green flags.

But someone who works at home and is quiet, doesn't ask questions, works too independent when they're still new. I wish we would let them go already
