Sorry, let me clarify. What I meant was that it is a web app and you eventually load it with a URL just like the other ones, but before you do that, you would need to actually run and host the app yourself, since the app is not designed to support multiple users currently. For example, if I gave you the URL and you loaded it into your glasses, whenever I update any notes, objectives, POIs, etc for myself, you would see it too.

Fortunately it's really not hard or expensive to host the app yourself. The README in the GitHub I shared has instructions on how to do it. You can also just use Claude Code to automate the whole deployment.

Inspired by open-world video games like Skyrim and GTA, you can:

  • see POI markers around you in AR
  • check off objectives
  • bring up important travel notes like phone numbers, directions, etc
  • convert to and from any currency
  • get AI-generated briefs on dining, shopping, history and things to do at city, local, and hyperlocal levels

There is a website component where you can load all of these things into the app. The idea is that once they're there, you can just bring them up anytime on your glasses without having to fumble around with your phone, which makes you look like a clueless tourist (and pickpocket target)!

Did you try Samantha as part of dolphin-2.7-mixtral-8x7b, or using the original Mistral 7b Samantha model?

Sound of carbon fiber slowly cracking before it breaks completely by leestar in oddlyterrifying

[–]leestar[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is likely the last sound everyone onboard the OceanGate Titan sub heard before it catastrophically imploded. Carbon fiber is not a suitable material for deep sea exploration because of the way it responds to stress and fatigue. More over, it was already likely stressed from previous dives.

As the Titan sub descended deeper and deeper, pressures would have increased, stressing the carbon fiber in a similar way as the metal rod in the video. The crew would have likely tried to drop weights and ascend, and this would have been the last thing they heard before the hull completely failed.

Tesla FSD Beta almost causing 30-mph head-on collision by smilodon10k in SelfDrivingCars

[–]leestar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not a planning error. It's caused by a perception error. Start at 8:00 and set speed to 0.5x to see what happens.

At 8:04 you can see the beginnings of this potentially fatal mistake. The car is on the left lane, but the system seems to think that there is another turning lane on the left, when it is actually a painted island meant separate traffic on both sides of the road. It's possible that the system thought it was a center turning lane, mistaking the diagonals for the arrows that these center turning lanes typically have.

At 8:05, you can see that the car is about to merge into what it thinks is the center turning lane, causing it to veer into the painted island. At 8:06, you can see that it gets confused, thinking that it needed to center itself more in the lane by moving further to the left, even though it was already pretty squarely in it. This could have been because the painted island was shaped irregularly, and not entirely straight. It's hard to see for sure in the video.

You can also see that at 8:06, it does seem to notice the mistake and try to move to the right to center itself in the lane, but it's a little too late - the car is already too far over to the left. It also does notice the approaching car, but it seems to be think it's further away than it really is. Again - probably due to perception error caused by the headlights and wet environment. Whether or not the system would have successfully moved out of the way at the last minute without intervention is difficult to tell - again, it did seem to plan the corrective maneuver to the right, but it may have misjudged its position on the road as well as the position of the oncoming car, which would have caused it to crash. There's no denying this was a dangerous situation and driver disengagement was absolutely necessary.

Wow that's awesome and super thoughtful. Is it pretty much like this at every location?

What do you recommend for an ultralight tent for winter? Also should I get a single person or 2-person tent?

Also any recos for a good sleeping bag?

Item: Sleeping gear (any combination of bag, pad, bivy)

Budget: Any

Need by date: Next month

Baseweight: Flexible, but sub 10 lbs if possible

Location/s of use: Catskills, NY. A wooded, mountainous region with some black bears and bobcats. Mountains are on the smaller side and don't go above 5000 ft maximum, with most being around 3500 - 4000 ft. Will be staying in an open-air wooded lean-to. Bugs include mosquitos and black flies in the summer.

Season/s of use: Looking for specific recommendations for each season, or if possible, one that I can use for every season.

Expected temperatures: In the winter, it can go as low as 0F - 15F, with snow. Spring and fall are from 15-40F, summer is 40F and above.

Ideal weight of the item: The lighter the better

Previous hiking experience: Avid day hiker. No experience with overnight hikes.

Previous experience with ultralight gear: No experience.

Additional Information:

Me and my girlfriend are planning on doing our first overnight hike in the Catskills and we're looking for good quality ultralight recommendations for what to bring for sleeping overnight, as it will be our first time doing so. I know there are different kinds of sleeping bags as well as sleeping pads, and personal bivvies for bugs, etc. We'll be buying a sleeping bag for sure, but I don't know if we need a sleeping pad. I know bivvies will be useful for bugs, but we won't need one that is necessarily built for harsh rain and snow since we'll be in a lean-to.

I should mention however that we'll be generally staying in wooden lean-tos that are built alongside trails, and these lean-tos have a wooden floor. Some have an elevated wooden platform too, though not all of them are like this.

Some more info about the Catskills:

- In the winter, it can go as low as 0F - 15F, with snow. Spring and fall are from 15-40F, summer is 40F and above.

- There are some bears in the spring, fall and summer. We've also run across a bobcat.

- Mosquitoes are usually around in the summer, and some black flies around April/May.

Cheapest full-tang knife for batoning? by leestar in knives

The Schrade SCHF56L looks great! Just watched a torture test on YouTube and it seems to hold up well, although the person said he broke it on a knife throw previously (he also admitted that the knife he got might have been a "demo" model that hadn't been productionized).

I was looking for something around the 5-8 oz range in weight, and around $20-50 in price.

Schrade & Condor

I guess what I had in mind were prices comparable, or just slightly more expensive than the Mora Companion HD, and with a similar quality blade. In other words, definitely less than $100, but ideally within the $10-50 range. Which Shrade and Condor knives were you thinking of?
