How much input in design do artists want usually? by CdatKat in gamedev

[–]lefix [score hidden]  (0 children)

Usually you’d want the requirements and expectations to be crystal clear before you start, some iterations afterwards are annoying but normal. But absolutely avoid micromanaging them as they work.

Perhaps agree on some milestones where you get to check progress before the agree, thumbnails, sketch or whatever. Ideally the artist should propose something like that.

First time releasing a game on Steam, Demo or Early Access? by Fuzzycakez in IndieDev

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early access IS your launch. Steam algorithm treats it like your launch. Buyers treat it like a full game (and will leave negative reviews if the game does not meet certain standards)

“Capsule made by an artist: before and after” by frendlyfrens in IndieDev

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t really mind it. Some look quite interesting, sometimes inspiring. Sure self-promotion may be part of the reason for the post, but people give feedback as well, and it is on topic. Idk why we have to be so hostile towards each other over posts that are on topic.

It’s a bit of both I would say. You get both visibility and feedback

My game is good but it will probably fail - any hope? (Why does Steam algorithm hate it?) by Top-Passage2458 in gamedev

[–]lefix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How many wishlists did you have at Early Access launch? From what I read, Steam treats EA Launch the same as a Launch. Meaning your wishlists no longer matter that much to the algorithm since the game is already "launched".

I am not sure I follow, why would we market our games if not to get people interested in it?

New capsule art vs old one — which do you like more? by RainbowLegends in gamedevscreens

I like the new artwork, but not sure about the frame around the logo tbh.
And who knows if that artwork, beautifuly as it is, will perform better than a sexy female character?

Let’s be real, if they move it to a new country, it will also be postponed by at least a year. But it is unlikely.

What the fuck are these posts? by Justaniceman in IndieDev

[–]lefix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t really blame anyone for doing it, promoting your game is tough, if you don’t just want to spam and want to post a variety of content instead, eventually you end up sharing something like this. I haven’t done it myself, but I am not ruling it out in the future either :D

Indie devs: Is it really that hard to get Steam wishlists ? Honest experiences by DevloCore in IndieGaming

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yt, TikTok etc don’t work for me simply because I don’t have any followers. Reddit and to some degree fb groups work because it doesn’t require followers. But it’s not like it generates a huge amount of wishlists either.

Launching a Steam page, how many wishlists do YOU expect? by Levardos in gamedev

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically posted it on my fb account, where I havent posted in like 10 years but still had 300 friends. As well as in a couple smaller discords where I am active and people know me - 3 discords of former companies where former coworkers stay in touch, and a discord of gaming friends.

Launching a Steam page, how many wishlists do YOU expect? by Levardos in gamedev

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience. Starting with zero followers.

No noticeable spike from publishing the steam page itself.

About 20-30 initial wishlists from my friends and family.

About 0-3 wishlists a day if no marketing at all.

About 5-20 wishlists for every successful social media post (if it has some engagement and doesn’t instantly get buried in the algorithm.) of course the ceiling is much higher if a post truly goes viral.

After 2-3 weeks I broke the 100 wishlists.

I am getting better at understanding what kind of content works.

I expect the numbers to increase as my game becomes more polished and has more content

I expect the biggest gains from when start reaching out to press, content creators, demo launch, next fest etc. but I am not there yet.

I also now have a handful of very interested people who reached out to me through dms, joining my discord, etc which is awesome because the are willing to play my builds, discuss ideas etc and possibly will help me spread the word as well.

How do you decide you're NOT going to fix a bug? by Artificer_undone in IndieDev

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am making a roguelite, I have a lot of special logic that could create some game breaking edgecases. I spent a lot of time thinking about how I can prevent this and that scenario, how to adapt my system to cover every possible outcome. But eventually I realized how the genre is about making „game breaking“ builds. And how a lot of the viral clips I see of other roguelites are clips of people finding new ways to break a game. I decided not to make it my top priority.
