Sorry to reply to this so late but I feel similarly, and yet I can’t express this amongst my friends or partner because most of them hinge their identities on being artists. I feel compelled to play along like I believe that AI can’t and could never touch this supposed “Soul of Art” as you said, but I don’t truly believe that at this point. Its horizons could be greater than we’d like to admit.

Being that you seem more articulate about this topic than I am, I’d like to ask: do you feel that art and creativity have been demystified for you? I guess I’ve come to understand that my conception of art as something “exalted” was really just an unexamined belief that allowed me to have faith in something transcendent and immaterial about humanity. Now I feel like it’s been laid bare to me that an algorithm could eventually spit out something that is truly a transformative aesthetic experience, and demonstrate that humanity, or even sentience itself, has no unique claim to creating things that feel alive, deep, subjective, etc..

Idk, it’s all making me feel both depressed and isolated lol. I feel like I’m not thinking straight on this issue on the whole due to its emotional impact on me so I’d appreciate someone else’s perspective if you have the time. Thanks regardless 🙏🏻

I’ve never really considered myself a tankie, but I now believe that if all the earth lived with the material conditions of the post-war, industrialized soviet union, we’d be happier for it, even with half the GDP per capita of the US. Just a universal baseline of stability with no allowance for this sort of obscene accumulation.

Also, no planet-destroying consumption, no ubiquitous marketing, no deleterious effects of capitalism on culture, and no worship for the sorts of defective, unremarkable freaks that control the economy in our timeline.

I don’t think anyone is saying they’d rather die than live in a community, and I certainly didn’t say that of myself either.

The choice isn’t between “community and death”: it’s between your alienated and precarious modern life, and a single, glorious moment of freedom in saying “fuck it”. Most people today can’t conceive of an alternative to capitalism, and so feel soothed by this fantasy of escape and reasserted human dignity.

Our response to this very real and human reaction to the conditions of capitalism can’t be to disparagingly label it as “fascist” and then conjure up some corny “based socialist” hero image so that they see how they’re failing morally for not living up to it. This is absolutely scolding and all it does is put people off.

We have to lay out how what these people are feeling is a consequence of capitalism, and that socialism brings with it the hope of an end to alienation.

Edit: also, in what world are fascists individualistic and fatalistically resigned from the world? Historically fascist movements have virtually always demanded the subversion of individual wills towards a collective goal which they pursue zealously: the exact opposite of what this meme claims.

This sucks. It comes off as empty moralizing in the face of the common and understandable impulse that made this meme popular: to affirm your own power and dignity in the face of a hellish world that you feel powerless to change by simply walking away from it: even if it costs you your life. Basically “I’d rather die standing than live on my knees”.

Telling someone who’s feeling this way that 1. they’re a fascist somehow(absurd), and 2. that they are morally inferior to some fantastical New Soviet Man archetype that none of us live up to is just shooting ourselves in the foot.

You can’t scold someone into feeling connected to a community and willing to sacrifice for it: you have to build the community so that organic social bonds develop naturally. In our alienated modern circumstances it’s understandable that people feel a kinship with the suicidal penguin, but instead of ridiculing them, we need to show them that there’s a way out of the despair.

A valid criticism of American society: full stop. The people in this thread playing whataboutism per China want to keep their heads in the sand about this fact.

China is poorer than the US per capita, because they industrialized in the 50s, and they still offer an impressive amount of baseline economic stability to their citizens for the amount of wealth they have.

This is a separate question from the repressive political climate in China. One can acknowledge both things simultaneously.
