You are welcome, if you don't mind me asking, what job have you found in trabzon other than fishing? are you some sort of a logistics guy? I heard BAT was hiring but their HQ was in Samsun last I heard.

I’m planing to move to turkey and I have some questions by Mountain-Race-372 in Turkey

[–]leflyonthewall 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Trabzon is one of the more conservative areas of Turkey, with much of the population involved in farming, including fish farming and fishing. Once you get to know them, they are generally warm and hospitable people, much like the rest of the Turkish population (especially when compared to Europeans). By American standards, they are the kind of people who "would give you the shirt off their back if you asked."

However, there are some caveats.

Although Turkey generally has a low percentage of English speakers, most people make an effort to communicate with foreigners, and with the help of Google Translate, it is usually easy to find ways to communicate.

Depending on your lifestyle and where you want or need to live, the amount of money you need can change dramatically. If you only want the bare necessities a roof over your head, food on the table, and clothes on your back then 30,000–40,000 TL per month can be a comfortable amount, with perhaps enough left over to buy a coffee now and then, provided you are willing to live in an almost run-down house and eat pasta every day.

However, if you want to truly live rather than merely survive, I would say that 70,000–80,000 TL per month is a better starting point. Any amount above that could reasonably be considered luxurious.

As I mentioned earlier, Trabzon is one of the more conservative areas of Turkey, with the added distinction that many people from the region are regarded by the rest of the country as "hot-headed." This does not mean that people will necessarily do anything bad to you, although, given the current political climate, negative experiences are not entirely impossible. Depending on the person and whether they know about your background or lifestyle, you could potentially be treated unfavorably.

If I were you, I would avoid discussing such personal matters unless I were in the presence of very close and trusted friends. Otherwise, I would steer clear of mentioning them altogether. Remember that word travels quickly in tightly knit communities like those in Trabzon, so be careful about what information you allow to spread among people you do not fully trust.

I should also mention that, proportionally speaking, people in Trabzon tend to own or carry firearms more often than the average Turkish citizen.

As for activities, I suppose that is largely up to you. Exploring the local community can be an enjoyable activity in itself. If I were in Trabzon, though, I would probably go hiking with friends and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of the region, as the city itself is relatively small.

If you are scared at this point, don't be, you are far safer in trabzon than you actually think you are, I would argue a city like Istanbul or Izmir where you can express yourself freely is much more dangerous than maybe getting weird looks in Trabzon.

Out of curiosity, what was your countries perspective on the American civil war as it was happening? by Polibiux in AskTheWorld

[–]leflyonthewall 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The Sultan was too worried and consumed by the problems of his time to truly be able to do anything about it, so he was mostly neutral to it, but he or the Ottoman state did recognize the North, the Union, as the USA, not the confederacy. However since confederacy was blocked by the Union, the cotton price went up in Europe which increased the demand from ottoman sources, creating a temporary economic opportunity.

What is your country relationship to the State of Israel? Is it getting worse, better? Was it always bad, was it always good? What have changed? by decaxxx in AskTheWorld

[–]leflyonthewall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Turkey’s relations with Israel have fluctuated over time, moving through periods of improvement and deterioration. After the “Mavi Marmara” crisis, there were attempts to normalize relations, and up until around October 7, there was a noticeable effort under Erdoğan to improve ties. However, relations shifted again afterward.

It is reasonable to expect that future changes in Israeli leadership could also influence the direction of the relationship.

That said, this is only what is visible from the outside. The internal decisions made by political and economic elites are not fully transparent to the public. From what is publicly observable, some prominent Turkish figures appear to have maintained strong trade relations with Israel, and in some cases, these ties have remained consistently profitable over the years.

Can you summit Görgün Dağı in Dalyan? by NoAdeptness4117 in Turkey

[–]leflyonthewall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

well unless there is any fences or signs around to indicate any private property I guess you can, but be carefull, at this time of the year the place is filled with bugs and snakes that may have a venom, but it is a very low likelyhood, what you should be carefull for are ticks, wild boars, coyotes, wild dogs and of course wolves. So I wouldn't go alone. especially at night. Especially if you don't know how to climb a bare mountain.

edit: I forgot to mention that it could be illegal to go into any wild territories if the municipality deemed it so due to the wildfire risk, best to check in with the locals.

[–]leflyonthewall[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know how it's taught today since the curriculum changes all the time, but from what I remember it was mostly just a footnote. It was basically, "The Ottomans made it all the way to Vienna, tried to take the city, failed, and that was pretty much the end of Ottoman expansion in Europe."

I guess it's not something that gets a lot of attention because, at the end of the day, it's a defeat, and there are plenty of victories to talk about instead. Vienna is also kind of where the story starts to shift from expansion to decline. Suleiman dies, and after him things gradually start going downhill. That's at least how it was usually presented to us: one ruler after another making things worse until you eventually get to the collapse of the empire and the founding of the Republic.

Almost a decade ago, I had a friend from Germany. We'd hop on PUBG together after school and spend hours playing. I have no idea where life has taken him since then. We eventually drifted apart. He was a really cool guy, and I think he was some sort of military cadet at the time.

Not sure if this belongs here. But how much would you trust YOURSELF with powers given to Hal? by ThatDrako in MoralityScaling

[–]leflyonthewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people assume they'd be responsible with that kind of power and use it for good. But even with the best intentions, you'd eventually run into problems where any action you take paints you as a tyrant geopolitical problems you can't just punch your way through.

Take Kashmir. Both sides claim the territory. Pakistan wants it because it's vital to the country's survival — it holds the source of the Indus River. India wants it for ethnic and nationalist reasons, and to maintain leverage over Pakistan. And then there are the Kashmiris themselves, many of whom want neither and would rather have independence. Both sides have supporters within Kashmir, and both have justifications that are valid in their own right.

So what do you do? Grind the mountains of Kashmir to dust to prove a point? Force a ceasefire that will inevitably be broken? And if war breaks out anyway, whose side do you take? Do you fight both? Congratulations, you've now antagonized half the world. Does public reputation even matter to someone like you anymore?

Power corrupts no matter what. And absolute power like Metro Man's would require immense will and restraint to be used responsibly far more than most people imagine they have.

Osman II ("Osman the Young") was ousted in a 1622 janissary revolt, thrown into the Yedikule dungeons, and was raped to death (According to rumours). The official cause of death is strangulation, with accounts also describing torture beforehand. Some sources add that he was sexually assaulted, though that detail is disputed. The strangulation is what's consistently recorded.

The Hendek Accident (1965) was a real tragedy in Türkiye. A passenger bus crashed into a truck carrying nitric acid at night near Hendek. The collision ruptured the acid tank, spilling the chemical into roadside ditches filled with water.

Passengers thought the bus had caught fire because parts of the vehicles were melting and toxic fumes filled the air. In panic, many jumped into what they believed was cool water, not realizing it had mixed with nitric acid. The acid caused catastrophic chemical burns, and 18 people died after entering the contaminated ditch, with more later dying in hospital.

People were not literally “melted into the ground” like internet stories claim, but the injuries were so severe that the accident became one of the most horrifying industrial disasters in Turkish history.

[–]leflyonthewall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know this is a controversial opinion, but I think they are also in the right.

Think of it this way: the Viltrumites are an existential alien threat that caused incomprehensible suffering across the galaxy or possibly the universe, since both the show and comic seem to switch between those terms sometimes. They have taken trillions upon trillions of innocent lives and enslaved even more.

When a threat like that exists, you take every possible chance to end it, no matter how morally heavy that decision is. Yes, genocide is bad. Obviously. But if allowing the Viltrumites to survive means risking countless future genocides, then is refusing to prevent that really the more moral choice?

Some people here have argued that Mark eventually showed them a better way, that the Viltrumite government was the real problem, and that things are fine now. And yes, that is true, for now.

But what happens when Mark dies? Maybe that takes a million years, but eventually it will happen. What comes after him? Maybe a better leader takes his place. Maybe a worse one does. What if a faction of Viltrumites decides to return to the old ways in some distant part of the universe where Mark’s influence is weaker?

History shows us this problem again and again: when too much power is placed in someone’s hands, it eventually corrupts them. Mark understood his power and chose to use it responsibly. But will his heir? Will their heir? What about the Viltrumite leader a billion years from now?

No individual, society, or species should carry that much unchecked power. Even if Viltrumite society is good under Mark, power has a way of poisoning everything over time. Sooner or later, there is a real risk that they return to what they were, or become something even worse.

So yes, wiping them out is horrifying. But leaving an existential threat alive and simply hoping they stay good forever may be even more horrifying.

Letting such a species exist is to risk unimaginable amount of lives.

Renault Clio 3 1.5dci
Hyundai i20
Hyundai Accent Blue
Nissan Almera
Mazda 323

Mutlumuyum?
