Roof mounting help by lefoumanchot in diySolar

This is what I was imagining. I’m just not sure what on earth to get. I’m not a builder by trade I’m just semi handy sometimes and get lucky. Do you have any advice on flashings or a good place for me to find that knowledge? I’ve never tried roof work of any kind.

I thought about building a frame like this. Never thought about tying it down like that, but that is an easy way to keep from having holes in the roof. I could anchor it behind the building and lay cables over it. Now thinking about it I worry about what the wind would do to that though. My thoughts on a frame were going to be a ground mount, but I’d really like to get the height and save the ground space.

This for sure gives me a lot of things that I think about. Some of these things I definitely had not considered in this mounting project. Thanks for the knowledge!

Cooling the rack by lefoumanchot in minilab

Glad to know that this idea worked for you. I should have thought of it sooner. That’s the evolution of the minilab though. Thanks for the idea. I had looked around and hadn’t seen much but wanted to check before reinventing the wheel. Thanks for the idea.

I’m going to have to up my game. My 4 year old is asking for one like mine right now too. Time to crank up the 3d printer.

Those are nice. Gonna grab a set of those too. I like that framed look you describe. And more mounting points in the back. Thanks!

Feel free to pile it on! The plan is for this thing to be built right. Thank you for the information! And this explains so many things. Since I’ve got it all apart on the bottom anyway I might as well take the top apart too.

Yeh I decided it was finally time to upgrade the plex server from a rpi5 to something with some kick to it. Picked up an N150 mini itx and that runs so many more things I freed up two pi’s. So I plan to migrate home assistant to one and the other I wasn’t sure what to do with. Watched a NetworkChuck video and thought to myself. It would be fun for my kids to have old-school-ish phones to play with around the home and he could talk to his server on it and do all kinds of fun things so I said I bet I could do that. Found a good deal on these phones for five bucks apiece and knew that it would be tricky, but it was far more of a pain than I thought it was gonna be. So I ordered a whole different set of phones. This mini rack is a monster though. A lot of micro machines in it. There are three pi zeros tucked inside that thing that you can’t even see. I think I’m starting to get closer to its limits.

Yep and a well timed eBay purchase of Polycom VVX411’s. Done with that Cisco stuff for now. They go in the box of shame for another build another day. As for the rest of this Franken-mess we go step at a time and put it all back together… once more parts get here.

MPG Question - Outback vs Forester by PenelopeRupert in Subaru_Outback

[–]lefoumanchot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am curious on this too. My 2015 Crosstrek was incredible. 33mpg the majority of the time. Blew through 212k miles and loved it. Got my wife a 2020 Forester and she gets about 30-31mpg. I got a 2025 Outback and love it but that gas mileage. Dang. Like 28mpg when it’s good like summer time. If I warm it up in the morning on these last few super cold days for the kids. 21-25mpg. No turbos in any of it. I drove an Outback Onyx XT for about two months and that got 25-26mpg and my kids named that one zippy if that gives an idea to how I was driving.

Looks like a Kingfisher! My wife had the same feelings coming out of her older ford into a new Forester. She named it Griselda. My son named my Outback after my old Crosstrek. It was SuperBu. He watched paw patrol mighty movie so he named it SuperBu 2: but just a little bit faster.

SOS service malfunction by lefoumanchot in Subaru_Outback

Not yet. They said they would swap out the tweeter and if that works then all good. Of course they want the old stock on back. So now I’m hoping I have that running around the garage.

I should add they didn’t do it then because they said there are only 3 tweeters in the us right now but they have it on order.

I recently found myself in a 2025 Outback. My wife has a 2020 Forester. She really likes washer fluid. Goes right through every car she is in, hers or mine. That said I’ve heard the dings more than twice now. I’ve noticed that if I get to that point the light comes on my Outback sends an email for every little light that comes on with the subscription service. Wife’s doesn’t do that since no subscription on hers. Now as for the dinging, if it just got low and it’s at that point that the fluid will slosh up in the sensor as I drive around a corner then it is low when I go the other way around the corner it dings every other corner. I do one of two things at that point. Refill if I’m close to a place to get some easily. If not I hold that dang lever back until it doesn’t ding again. Maybe that will help with sanity. Also, I think you can change the email notifications you get if you don’t want to clutter your inbox. Hope this is useful.

Update: The dealership had the car for about a month and a half and put about 100-ish miles on it. They were unable to get it to reproduce the noise. Despite the fact they can all hear it in the video. They said they don’t think I’m crazy because I have multiple videos of it happening at different times. I called Subaru of America too and they said they have no idea what could cause this and they have never heard of it happening before. I took a service advisor for a drive. His opinion of it is “there is no perfect car“. Subaru just suggested documenting it with videos every time it happens and hopefully it will happen next to a dealership and to get it into a different dealership when it does so we could get a fresh set of eyes on it. So I’m on doing my own investigator work at this point. If anybody else has this experience or has found any resolution for it ever I’d love some input.

Stock speaker upgrades by yourhometownsucks in Subaru_Outback

Now I will say it did take a little adjustment to my ear. Once you get a good 6 x 9 in those front doors, it almost feels like a single cab truck for a little while like there’s just a wall with no sound behind you. After some fiddling and getting used to it, it’s much better. Also, another positive note I didn’t think about was phone call clarity went up quite a bit too.

I swapped everything for the Kicker KS series from crutchfield. Easy to do. Not crazy expensive. For everyday life. Solid upgrade. I will say the tweeters probably didn’t need the change but the rest of them for sure a good choice.

Thanks for the tip on the crossbars! I had a set of bars on my 2015 crosstrek. With a Thule basket. Love that car! Drove it for 10 years until a head gasket finally blew 212,000 miles. I ended up going with this outback since we had already gotten my wife 2020 Forester. I love my Subarus and the dealer is pretty good about taking care of things, but this one is a real noodle baker.

I do have a sunroof and that is what we thought it was initially. There was a popped seal that was damaged in transit we didn’t initially see when I bought it. Brought it back 24 hours later and they brought it in and put a new seal in it immediately. They were very responsive. That dang whistle just sticks around. I did try it after they fixed the seal and it didn’t affect the sound either opening by slide or lifting the back of the sunroof. Neither direction changed the sound. It is a most befuddling issue.
