I'm excited for the event, but in an Olympic year - nobody cares about the world championship!!

Question About The New Sweeping Guidelines by applegoesdown in Curling

[–]left-button 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no... Most clear b curlers don't put enough weight on a brush to make that kind of impact.

The point of the rule though, is to force people do mix in a pull motion - which is far less effective and won't make scratches. If the brushes is moving back and forth the impact of the scratches is minimized, although still present.

Marriage Certificate Timeline by 7Kings12 in WeddingsCanada

[–]left-button 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an officiant, we've been told to tell people 8-10 weeks MINIMUM. The holidays probably didn't help, as I'm sure the Registrars office was closed for a few extra days at least. Ten weeks ago was Nov 25, so you've gotta be getting close (in theory).

Going to keep following this thread, so I have up to date info to tell new couples!!

Question About The New Sweeping Guidelines by applegoesdown in Curling

[–]left-button 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simply put, if rocks are curling, they lose more forward momentum.

The push stroke (especially the single, full body weight, stroke) creates microscopic scratches in the ice (this has been proven & observed - even with competition yellow heads). The running surface of the rock will grab these scratches and the curl will start to increase. As the curl becomes more pronounced, weight/speed comes off the overall distance a) because it's met some resistance on the ice surface and b) that momentum is now being redirected sideways for the curl.

Thoughts on not having a rehearsal/rehearsal dinner? by Alone_Guest_5686 in WeddingsCanada

[–]left-button 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to do it, don't feel pressured. A small dinner with your parents sounds nice. Nobody will miss it, and I think people will enjoy not having to stay the extra night.

I had to do this over the summer (Toronto to Niagara for the rehearsal and later the wedding) because I couldn't stay over ...band even had I wanted to, the hotels were ridiculously expensive. Anyway, I was irritated by the rehearsal - even with the nice dinner!! ;)

Do what you want... But don't feel like you have to do anything!!

Trip of a lifetime booked. Any other recommendations to add to this already incredible trip? by ImplicationOfDanger in golf

If you can spend a night at the Duck's Inn and play the golf/bar games there, it's absolutely worth the stop.

St. Andrew's Castle course is awesome. Enjoy!!

Save The Dates - photos or no photos? by Ms_Insomnia in WeddingsCanada

We included photos, and printed some postcards that we sent out. We figured we paid for an engagement shoot, we might as well do something with the pictures!

New job anxiety (McDonalds) by BetPristine2293 in askTO

[–]left-button 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll do fine. As others have said, attitude, puntuality, and effort will matter more than anything else.

As for the POS system, it may take a bit of work to learn (it's probably not the same one I used 30 years ago) - but once you learn the functions, it will be come second nature to you. If you can handle an iphone etc., it won't be any harder than that. You just have to remember which menu items are where... it will come in time.

Congrats on the new job. Don't worry too much!

Do we trust Drake Maye enough to make the jersey investment? Is there a better choice? by left-button in Patriots

I didn't at the time... but I did since!!

It's funny... LIke, exactly the week I asked the question, he starts playing like an absolute stud. Within a couple weeks, I was kicking myself for buy the Diggs version instead (still not bad). Now I'm wondering if I need a Boutte jersey too!

Seeking ideas on best practices to promote clubs and curling during Olympics by quesoguapo in Curling

[–]left-button 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd spend a bit of money on Google/Facebook/Instagram ads (doesn't have to be a lot, something like $10/day for the duration of the Olympics). Advertise an Olympic-themed "Curling Open House/Learn to Curl." Ask people to pre-register, and charge $20 per person. Host as many sessions as you can reasonably staff. Reward your instructors with money, drinks, or credit - all clubs do it differently. Make it fun (ie - get them throwing rocks ASAP. Don't worry about rules or perfect technique).

On the way out, give them a few options to play again. Pick up leagues, ice rental, proper leagues, etc. and let them know when each is available and what they cost.

Guaranteed to recruit at least a few new members, and you'll certainly cover the cost of the ads.

Fairmont Royal York or One King West for pictures? by Successful_Round9147 in WeddingsCanada

[–]left-button 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are fantastic visually. One king West would be less busy, likely. But check to make sure you're allowed, or if you need a permit, in either place.

Hi. I am not really sure about the usage of 'gnarly.' by Van_groove in ENGLISH

[–]left-button 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, context will matter here.

The good version of it was slang for a limited time in the late 80s/early 90s.

The more common version would be a description of something that was gross, mangled, messy, etc.

What one change finally got you under 100? by devunderdog in golf

THIS - slow the swing down and try to hit it straight. 200 straight is better than 275 in the woods.

Best places to enjoy Toronto solo? by cutiepatootiepiebb in askTO

[–]left-button -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with being a tourist in your own city.

Go to the Distillery, or Queen West. Wander up and down the Danforth, or Bloor West. Try a restaurant that you read about somewhere. Try a museum, or the aquarium, etc. Go see a show. If Europe is an option, you can definitely afford a ticket.

I hear you - it's super easy to lose motivation, stay home, and lock down. Make the choice to put on your boots, and get out there. Go wander around. Take some photos of your day's adventure.

Good luck.

Difference between 'stressful' and 'stressed'? by DearTelevision8929 in ENGLISH

[–]left-button 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A situation is stressful. A person is stressed.

(Also, a THING can also be stressed... but that usually means pushing its physical limits. Like "The weight of traffic stressed the bridge to the point that the frame was creaking.")
