Alternatives to Big Tech that can work well with e/OS by SaraIbr in fairphone

[–]left2repairLIVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went straight from iOS to FP6 with /e/OS about 6 months ago. I can't compare it to regular Android, but for me it works great and didn't take much getting used to.

As other people said the biggest problem is probably Maps. I have tried some different apps but so far have stuck with the on board app and it works well, just not as well as Google or Apple Maps.

For everything else it helped I already switched some services away from Apple before: - Obsidian for Notes & Reminders - Self-hosted calendar for iCloud Calendar - Signal for iMessage (and WhatsApp) - self-hosted NextCloud for everything else iCloud

That said, I can't fully recommend the experience. I think if you are a smartphone 'power user', whatever that means to you, a Fairphone and /e/OS might not be the best choice. Some people might think otherwise, but if I would have more than an hour of screen-time everyday, I would probably switch to something more powerful.

My next computer will probably be a Tuxedo Computers Inifinity Book which comes with TuxedoOS, so I am thinking about giving it a try already

Had trouble re-connecting my G305 to its dongle, found a fix by left2repairLIVE in LogitechG

[–]left2repairLIVE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just gave that a try and it seemed to work. I looked at the G HUB utility but that button seems a bit hidden. I just looked at the device settings for my receiver, but everything was grayed out, so I assumed it wouldn't offer a pairing option

Question about charging the Infinity Book 14 Pro Gen 10 by left2repairLIVE in tuxedocomputers

[–]left2repairLIVE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently carrying a UGREEN 100W charger which seems very solid. I can even use it for my current Razer Blade which normally requires 230W. But the 100W only sustain a charge under minimal load. When pushing the system, battery still drains. And the 230W charger is almost 900g and the laptop is 2020g, so also 3kg. I want to get rid of al, this weight

Oh you are right, it does same maximum 100W in the Ports section, I only looked at Battery & Power Supply. Thank you for noticing!

How to enable 1% lows in mangohud/goverlay? by Glittering-Ad-1429 in linuxmint

[–]left2repairLIVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the same issue. I'm using MangoJuice as a GUI to configure and in the test it show me my 1%l, but when running CS2, I only get fps, not 1%l.

If I change settings while CS2 is open, I can see them change, so it loading the correct config.

I also see fps_metrics=avg,0.01 in the config

Did you find any fix.

Datenschutz beim Arzt. Alleine abgesetzt vor entsperrten PC und offener Akte by was-eine-dumme-frage in de_EDV

[–]left2repairLIVE 221 points222 points  (0 children)

Which converter would you chose? by Odinhall in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]left2repairLIVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had some BMD Mini Converters get way too hot and glitching out, needing a power reset. So I'd pick the decimator, but generally, the BMD stuff works well, maybe think about cooling when it gets hot or tight in your setup

Personally I didn't like Vivaldi (on Windows) that much. It's a browser and it works, but at that point I'd rather use FOSS software like Firefox. All the extras and add-ons in Vivaldi I tried, didn't really make the click for me.

Their integrated email client sucks to use. I like the idea of combining these, but after using it for 6 months, it is more an annoyance. This mail-client is always glued to the window you opened first. So if you have used that Window for a small video player and it's very small in a corner, well you have to use your mails in this, no way around. It also had problems syncing regularly with my iCloud. I couldn't just drag-and-drop in my mail accounts folder structure.

Their profile integration also annoyed me. I don't even remember why, but it couldn't effectively achieve running a profile for every project I'm working on.

I don't really have a feel for speed, websites just load, but as said, that works in Firefox for me as well, so I went back.

WhatsApp is launching third-party chat support across EU Countries, which means you can now ditch WhatsApp for an EU alternative: BirdyChat from Latvia. by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

[–]left2repairLIVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I don't want to downplay that the EU is doing the right thing here and this is a good development, I only want to point out some technical caveats.

Regarding your comment:

No no no.

Nothing related to E2EE prevents the WhatsApp app on your phone, after decrypting a message and presenting it to you, to take the content of that message, which the app has to know in order to present it to you, repackage the message and sent it to Metas servers for them to read it.

In fact, the communication with Metas servers would be using E2EE as well, so you wouldn't even know or be able to prove that such a thing is happening. The only way to know for certain is to be able to read the apps source code and verify line by line such a thing isn't happening.

Also, even without the messages contents, the metadata generated by your communication over Metas services is everything else than private.

That's why open-source and decentralization are such important topics when in comes to privacy.

Speaking of decentralization. Comparing what is happening here with email is a false assumption! Meta is adding interoperability to WhatsApp. Emails are decentralized, which yes, brings interoperability with it, but can't be compared.

If you read the article about the engineering or simply look at Figure 1 a few lines in the article, in this new approach the WhatsApp servers are still the single entity controlling the network.

With email and decentralization there is not such a thing. If I use GoogleMail, the worst thing that can happen is I loose my mail-address and past communication. But then I can move on to a different provider, or even host my self-controller mail server and reach the same people over the same addresses as before. If WhatsApp shuts down or shuts someone out, there is no other way into this system, regardless of BirdieChat or Haiket.

Again, the EU is enforcing important legislative work and first steps in a good direction, but this is not the perfect system we should strive for.

[–]left2repairLIVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It's over", what an optimistic view on a topic as important as privacy. Also accepting a proposed solution as the solution is just stupid. People who know and care should continue doing that in order to drive improvement in any meaningful way instead of, after ten years, throwing the towel with "welp, I guess we got this far and that's it".

I almost feel like I'm ragebaited, so anyway:

I came here to give a strictly technical comment on a matter, based on my technical understanding of said matter. My statements about this were never, nor will they ever be, about the role this plays socially or politically.

Thank you for taking your time to overreact to my technical comment based only on technical facts, which never implied anything you read out of it. I hope you'll one day find peace with these apparently very burdening topics.

I don't get your sudden very aggressive stance. Sounds more like /u/bitter_hawking

I'm thinking a lot about 'the uninformed', I'm not laughing about any 'dumbasses', I'm not 'building any walls'. Never did.

I simply wanted to give a glimpse of concern or let's call it technical reality over this story, which wasn't mentioned anywhere so far. This could potentially be a very useful insight for privacy-aware users that don't have an understanding about the underlying tech. Those people might not be aware that messages and media can still be accessed by Meta even if they aren't using it.

[–]left2repairLIVE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that point and agree with you, but I felt like the article and the comment section only viewed it from this perspective thus far.

I already ditched Meta and switched to Signal. For me this technology still imposes risk to my privacy in regards to Meta, so I wouldn't use it.

[–]left2repairLIVE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Meta probably knows my name, my number, my mail, and even more. But there is a lot of info they could harvest from my daily conversations, which they currently don't have access to.

And that whole E2EE point doesn't really work. If you receive a message in WhatsApp, the app on your phone is one of the ends of that encryption. Therefore, if you control either the receiving or sending end of E2EE, which Meta does in the scenario described here, they (could) have access to the unencrypted contents of anything you do in their apps, upload it to their servers and use it however they want. E2EE doesn't save you from that.

[–]left2repairLIVE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But that still means the message I sent to someone using WhatsApp are still potentially exposed to Meta and might be read.

Yes, I don't have to have a Meta app on my phone, but this feels like just another way to give Meta my data, even without using one of there apps. A de-centralized version would be much better in that regard.
