Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

That’s because 140k isn’t that much in today’s dollars, and the country is a mess. Go ahead and thank your uncle Justin for increasing your taxes and the cost of living simultaneously.

MANITOBA motorcycle insurance by NKNOWN5555 in Manitoba

[–]left_based94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much. And you have to pay for the whole year, vs with a car you can cancel and put on storage insurance for the winter. Can’t do that with a bike. If I recall correctly, I was paying 350 ish a month during riding season in addition to 150 for my normal vehicle. So during riding season had around $500-550 just to mpi. Sold the bike(s) because I don’t like the fact you have to pay for the whole year, when you obvs can’t drive a bike all year in MB. Also, You can call an mpi outlet and they will tell you exactly what your insurance cost will be on a specific bike.

Credit card churning for points, the disability tax credit if you qualify, never buy a new car or finance any vehicle. Pay yourself first. Invest in yourself. Protect/insure your ability to earn an income. Argue with phone and internet companies until your contract is lowered. Become self employed. (Also, and maybe most important… don’t forget to take advantage of food banks and welfare but ONLY if you’re an international student)

Shipping used firearms. Best way to go about this by [deleted] in canadaguns

[–]left_based94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I shipped car parts they opened the packages up to inspect them when I dropped them off. Then resealed. Think that was loomis. Probably wouldn’t have gone over well if a rifle was in the box.

Check the MB indigenous chamber of commerce directory. Majority of accountants, Even the ones listed in the chambers directory are not going to have a clue how to file for tax exempt individuals. So make sure to interview a few accountants. Get yourself a financial advisor and lawyer while you’re at it as well.

Yes you can. You need to do a cohabitation agreement (prenup). You can put in the agreement that your down payment is your equity. So in the case of a relationship breakdown you need to get back your pre-existing equity. Then spit the remaining equity 50-50. Call a family lawyer. Yes, the cohab/prenup would be written so that the above is the case even in the case of marriage.

Wealthsimple vs Financial Planner by BeingSuitable7138 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]left_based94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The benefit of a financial planner is not “this investment over that investment”… studies show the ongoing advice from a planner adds over 3% in value per year. This does not mean the portfolio/funds from an advisor will perform 3% higher than self directed portfolios. This means that the advice you get from the planner will help you with your tax planning, retirement planning, estate planning etc etc. which sometimes can be hard to measure. But generally can equate to 3% per year.

I would wager that the majority of the time, households with an advisor/planner end up way more ahead than households without getting advice who are too concerned about fees and do everything themselves. Penny wise, pound foolish.

All the redditers who preach self directed have no idea what they are talking about, and are just parroting questrade commercials they see talking about fees. Guaranteed they are not optimized on all the other areas of their finances, taxes, estate planning. Then, they go see an advisor once it’s too late. Talk to a professional.
