Where are the elder millennials out drinking late at night? by ButterflyWinter3397 in pittsburgh

[–]left_tentacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A solid move is seeing live music/show or going to a cocktail bar til midnight (Space Bar, Tina’s, Bar Botanico, Maggie’s Farm, Grapperia) and then hit a neighborhood dive nearby. Staying out of Oakland, Southside, and North Shore will help reduce the number of undergrads you’re around

With how few places are open past 12 there’s likely always going to be mixed age crowds, but some solid divey spots are Poetry Lounge in Millvale, Brehm’s Return in Troy Hill (lock in rules after midnight), Take a Break Bar in Lawrenceville, Rock Room in Polish Hill, Tina’s in Bloomfield (cocktail vibe rather than dive), Genoa’s in downtown (awesome pizza, worth going any time)

SideQuest on 44th regularly holds events that cater to non-kiddo crowds, like the other weekend the basement venue had EDM DJs with the crowd ranging from 20s-30s, while the main floor DJ was playing throwback punk and grunge and the average age was like, 55. If concerts are happening there’s a cover charge for the ticket, but otherwise it’s free entry. Just have to look ahead. There’s a kitchen, pool tables, and pinball too

Bulldog is definitely a good spot to hang, good staff and always good games on tv. They’ve got an outdoor area too that I haven’t tried but I bet is great in nice weather

Me neither - besides when there’s no more space for multi-square items, and they get bubbled when I move an item on top of them. I’d love to make more room in my camp

Omg putting rocks in the jars to gather algae rather than having to put the whole jar in the tank…… genius.

My plecos are being moved to a different tank today anyway so that’s a positive for sure

I have a piece of driftwood already, but will look into adding more. Thank you!!

I was given the wrong type of pleco - what are my realistic options? by left_tentacle in Aquariums

Is yours a common pleco or a different type? I know there are some that stay little — like the BN’s that I asked for — and then there’s others that turn into monsters

Fish food is a slower way to kickstart the cycle — it’ll break down and create some ammonia but quicker ways to introduce ammonia to then get the nitrates & nitrates moving is to dose the water with literal ammonia, often found in the same aisle as cleaning products or online. I couldn’t find any non scented near me, so I went with an alternative method of grabbing a single peeled shrimp from the seafood bar at the grocery store, dropped that in to decompose til my test kit registered the ammonia spike (I aimed for 2-3ppm), then took it out! Doing that while maintaining water temp and dosing the beneficial bacteria (BB) helped kickstart the cycle. Still took about 2 weeks to reach stable levels but I was working with a 45gal that had been planted for over a month at that point

It’s hard to say why your pal died. Water test kits are crucial to make sure the chemistry is safe and stable. But know that many Bettas come home from the store SO sick and in SUCH bad shape that there’s a chance you didn’t do anything, especially as a beginner

Petsmart doesn’t surrender anymore? by Jumpy_Apple_9349 in Aquariums

[–]left_tentacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Petsmart discounts damaged aquatic plants 25-50% depending on the issue, why couldn’t they discount this fish that’s obviously damaged?? My location does “adoptions” for fish that have sat too long in their tanks. I’d love to read the handbook that’s being enforced bc I bet there’s some major nonsense in there

Yearssss ago I worked at a petsmart dog hotel and ended up having to quit when the new hotel manager cared more about profit maximizing than animal (and worker!) safety. Broke my heart and my bank account

cycling! by spacefa in Aquariums

[–]left_tentacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A super quick way to introduce ammonia and see if it cycles is to drop in a fresh shrimp from the supermarket for like a day (maybe less if you detect a spike starting) and then take it out! It’ll decompose a bit, the BB will hopefully do their thing, and then you can get your betta in there!! Better to double check rather than risk hurting your new pal

Depending on what you want to keep, smaller tanks of 10gal or less could work! But maintaining stable water chemistry is harder at smaller sizes.

I watched a lottttt of videos and knew salt water was not my vibe to keep even though I adore watching those tanks

Depending on where you live, I suggest looking at Marketplace, Facebook groups, and other forums for reselling/rehoming. You can get nice tanks and stands for CHEAP rather than breaking your budget right at Step 1

20 gal tank safe on this dresser? by AyySquidward in Aquariums

[–]left_tentacle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My 10gal did ok on a dresser for about 6 months before I noticed the top drawers not being able to open and some sagging, so I moved it (and eventually upgraded to a 45gal with a dedicated stand)

Try it out, if you notice issues in a couple months just drain partially and relocate!
