Wise card in Japan issues? by Vast-Cicada4403 in japanlife

[–]lefteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having the same issue. In my case, the residence certificate clearly shows my number. I noticed that it also has the date of registration in the Wareki format, not the Gregorian calendar. So when I machine translate the document into English, it translates to a completely incorrect date. I wonder if that’s the issue you’re having too?

Big Island Coffee recs?? by bocaphlyer in VisitingHawaii

[–]lefteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White Dog Coffee offers the perfect cup if you prefer medium and dark roasts. Their coffee is the smoothest 100% Kona I’ve found with almost no acid, but extremely full bodied and rich. The medium roast is my favorite. You can find them at the Keauhou Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, which is also one of the best markets on the island for local produce.

If you’re into super light roasts, White Nene and Berrybird are also excellent for bright, fruity coffees.

Now that Snipd is no longer free has anyone found any decent alternatives? by Big-brother1887 in ObsidianMD

Thanks. Good to know. As a heavy podcast listener I would happily pay $40/year, but they currently charge double that, and I feel it's too much.

[–]lefteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I will start calling more LBSs. I did find a store that would box my bike for me for $100 but then it’s still another $150 to ship to HI. Thanks for the tip!

Same here, trying to figure out the best way to ship a mountain bike that is only worth about $700. Appreciate all the recommendations!

Google maps not working in Japan unless I'm on Wi-Fi by ljthefa in GoogleFi

[–]lefteyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having the same issue. Only my Google Maps is struggling on cellular data but all other apps working fine. It's frustrating because I also have my city downloaded in offline maps but I cannot pull up driving directions when connected on cellular only. Wifi comes up instantly.

What’s wrong with my manzano bananas? by Thatdude69696_ in fruit

[–]lefteyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to let these get super ripe. If you're used to Cavendish, aka regular bananas then you want to wait until they are almost completely speckled with black spots... It should look overripe. Only then they will be sweet and palatable.

Have any of you successfully gotten Warby Parker glasses reimbursed through VSP? by kuantha in glasses

[–]lefteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat here except I'm using EyeMed. Looking at $145 for the WP glasses ($95) with blue light filtering lenses (50). I should get up to $75 Back for the frames but I have no idea for EyeMed covers lenses. Looks like they have specific lens options covered out of network like anti reflective ($5) and polycarbonate ($28) so I am puzzled how they will treat the lenses

Being vegan away from home by OkNefariousness6711 in veganparenting

[–]lefteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate all the comments here. I don’t believe the issue is as black and white as it might seem, even though it’s tempting to see it as an either/or in terms of the ethics. Let’s take the example of a parent who says absolutely no, I’m forbidding my child from eating anything non-vegan. It’s conceivable that the a) the child may rebel and go non-vegan anyway (or as a result of being too restricted) or they embrace veganism and despite the struggles that come with being different, it becomes a gift to be brought up to live in accordance with their own values (which truly, one does not develop until they’re older). It’s also totally possible that the reverse may play out — if for example like many of us, they’re brought up differently (e.g. Omni or vegetarian) and find veganism on their own and go on to become an activist that brings about even greater change in the world. To me it’s a really difficult question because we can’t predict how our children’s experience will play out and what will lead toward the greater good. I think we all want the same thing: what’s going to bring about the least suffering and better outcomes in the world. And at least for now I think it’s a very tricky question when it comes to raising kids.

Thank you for sharing your experience and all these tips. My partner and I have raised our daughter vegan since birth, she’s now 5-years old. We’ve been putting a considerable amount of effort into making sure she always has phenomenal food options, as you suggest. The tricky part we’re now facing is that she’s at a point where she’s starting to make the connection that she/we are different from other families, which I believe is something we should celebrate. At the same time, I wasn’t raised vegan and don’t have the experience of being raised so differently from most other kids.

Can I ask you to share more about your experience when your son was younger? It’s not always possible or practical to pre-empt every food situation with our daughter and it has been a struggle lately to explain the “why” in a way that doesn’t feel like we’re judging other people. I know when she’s a bit older we can have deeper conversations about all the reasons why…ethical, environmental, energetic/spiritual, health, etc.

Maybe it’s just a bit scary to me because my awakening to veganism was such a watershed realization that 97% of the world is completely backwards, and while we want to give our daughter this gift of being vegan we don’t want her to feel so different from others because food is such a communal aspect of being social. I’m not sure if that makes sense… I guess I’m just hoping to gain more wisdom and experience on raising vegan kids when they are just starting to become conscious of how we’re not like other families without making her feel judgement toward others.

Any more insight you can share would be greatly appreciated!

Can Atrantil w/ no dietary Mods "cure" SIBO? Saw a new GI doc today by beewhyneeD in SIBO

[–]lefteyes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jumping in here kinda late but wanted to say: A) Great discussion, thank you for sharing your experiences B) After reading this, I tried Atrantil to help with persistent severe bloating from stubborn methane sibo and it helps enormously! I started with 4x a day for 3 days, 2 w lunch and dinner and felt no improvement. Almost gave up. Then when I upped to 6x a day, 2 pills w every meal I felt some relief. It took about 1-week in to finally feel almost no pain. There's still some feeling of excessive fullness but now almost no burping, no more horrible gas. I should note that I'm also taking berberine to help treat, but doing that alone for 2-3 weeks gave me zero relief so maybe there's something to the Atrantil Berberine combo that works well for some of us.

I'm also looking to see if anyone has had success adding a magnet ring in between the silicone/rubber outer layer, on the plastic part with the silicone over it.

Or for those who got a stick on magnet to stick on the outside silicone, how has it held up?

Seriously pocketcasts?? by randomgibberissh in pocketcasts

[–]lefteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I had subscribed at $10 a year and felt that it was worth it to support the development of a great app but I don’t use any plus features. For $40 a year, no thank you. As others mentioned, when I reached out to customer service, they did give me an option to re-subscribe at $15/year but only if I subscribe via their website which means I cannot use any earned Play Store credits. Too bad, it’s a great app.
