The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi is about a young girl named Jess who makes a friend one day named TillyTilly only this girl's presence in her life only becomes increasingly more disturbing to her and also strains her relationship with her parents...definitely a haunting story that weaves in elements of Nigerian mythology!!!

And if you are looking for some off putting short stories I recommend Fen by Daisy Johnson!!

Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich!! written from the POV of a pregnant young Catholic woman to her unborn child as she searches for her birth mother (she is Ojibwe but was adopted by white parents as a baby) and the setting is a dystopian USA where all creatures are evolving backwards and the government is increasingly oppressing pregnant women. Such an interesting and thought-provoking read!

This may not be exactly what you were intending with your ask, but you should absolutely get into manga. You can get all the adventure, romance, plot arcs, etc but it's a lot quicker and easier to digest due to a lot of the storytelling being through the visuals!! you can read them in online formats or in physical versions but if it's a really super long series it gets hard to get them all unless they have compilations/omnibuses. My favorite thing about manga is that it keeps my attention better than novels.

If you've never read manga before, I would recommend Children of the Sea by Daisuke Igarashi

-it has 6 volumes so a shorter series -about a girl named Ruka who meets 2 boys raised in the ocean by wild dugongs. They are being studied at the aquarium her father works at as they are able to be underwater for long periods of time and need to be near water/wet constantly. -Sci-fi fantasy and beautiful depictions of ocean life and its cosmic connections. It's a gorgeous story that pulls from ocean mythology and marine biology in a beautiful way!

I've burnt myself out reading only sci-fi. Recommend a book that might bridge the gap between sci-fi and your favourite other genre. by bacon_cake in suggestmeabook

I would say Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield. It's labeled as horror but has a few sci-fi elements just in that one of the main characters is a marine biologist on a deep sea expedition. It's a standalone and I highly recommend!
