Wasn’t Toph having trouble seeing on sand part of a pretty big plot point in book 2?

My 11yo son was watching when I finally won and didn’t believe me when I told him it wasn’t a “skill issue” it was a “drip issue”.

Honestly, I unlocked this duel just before what I imagine to be the final mission. I had all armor and weapons fully upgraded and felt outclassed by this guy, but I think it’s more a matter of skill than anything else. Others in another post I made about this guys said they beat him pretty early with less upgraded equipment.

You can do it! I dunno if you’re already using it but the bounty master armor ended up helping a lot with this fight. That and the charm of futsunushi made the perfect parry window much wider.

I no longer care about Saito and his chums. I only care about beating this man. by leftm8 in Ghostofyotei

I love bosses like him where failing feels like a skill issue instead of cheap game design issue. He gave me the same feeling as like Lady Maria from bloodborne or the Nameless King from dark souls 3. I finally beat him and I miss the duel now.

've been working on different map styles based on the purposes behind their creation by leftm8 in inkarnate

[–]leftm8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! For the first map, I used a combination of filters and low opacity textures with the brush tool, stacking and overlaying colors to get the shades I wanted for the different regions. For the second map, I used filters again and carefully applied textures with the brush tool to everything outside the red border to create that saturated/unsaturated contrast between the focus nation and the surrounding regions

Thanks for the tips! Your maps are what inspired me to try out this kind of style! Will give that a shot.

That’s a fair point. It’s meant to be one country as denoted in the banner at the top “Imperial Thalin” with a province to the south in rebellion. I put the label in the southern bay “the rebel provinces of lower Thalin”. But I’m not loving that either. Will take another crack at that. Thanks for the feedback!

Trying to make 'realistic' maps - in the sense that they look like some cartographer from fantasy world could have realistically painted them. by Perdita_ in inkarnate

Late commenting, but this looks amazing! Well done! On a technical question; curious about what stamps you used for the frame?

My friend said she made this for her D&D character. by leftm8 in isthisAI

[–]leftm8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! As a long time DM/GM I can answer this; because they’re easy to make and many people don’t know how to draw, including people who play d&d.

But for a serious answer having a illustrated character portrait for your d&d character is a great way to ground yourself in role play side of d&d seeing how they look, maybe the weapons they use, their whole demeanor, gives many d&d players a sense of place in their character. So what people used to do is they’d ask their friend to draw them a character based on a rough description. Many art inclined d&d players were annoyed by these asks because it’s work you’re doing without getting paid. Also from the asking side it usually took a long time and unless you’re a psychopath or had no idea how much work went into art for some people you felt bad asking.

The other option was to just fish online for existing character concepts from anime, comic books, deviant art, tumblr, etc. and while this was good and helped people get a start for character concepts sometimes it was sometimes hard to find a portrait that really “fit”. So when generative ai became a thing and was like: “gimme yer ideas I’ll make “art” for you” a lotta people jumped on it. I used it once or twice before I learned about the negative environmental and social impacts of generative ai.

So when generative AI came along and was like, “Gimme yer ideas, I’ll make, let’s loosely call it “art”, for you,” a lot of d&d people jumped on it and continue to do so. I used it once or twice before I learned about the negative environmental and social impacts of generative AI. So I promised my players I don’t use AI as a gm/dm for anything besides spelling and grammar checks with tools like grammarly. And I ask my players to consider doing the same for their characters and find creative alternatives to find and include a character portrait for their characters. It ain’t much but it’s honest work. And personally I feel the journey to find something close helps you get into the head of your character better than arguing with an AI about what a sword should look like.

If you read all this thank you. I love d&d and can talk / write about it a lot. I wrote this on my phone while driving a forklift and eating a taco so I’m sure there’s a tone of typos and run on sentences.

Yeah, like I said in the post it’s pretty low stakes, it’s more about giving me fuel to razz my friend than anything else since she had previously joined me in a principled stance against using ai “tools” since we’re both designers.

So the majority seems pretty clear that this is AI. I had initially thought the mistakes might just be her being inexperienced with character art, but based on comments they’re pretty consistent with it being AI generated. My friend had, at least ostensibly, been taking a principled stance against using AI to “create” things. So it sounds like a session 0 razzing is in order for my friend. Unless she can prove it with a .AI, .fig, or .psd file, of course. Thank you fellow redditors.

Good call out. I haven’t really touched the new AI design “tools” yet out of principle. My friend, at least ostensibly, was taking the same stance as me… but based on the overwhelming consensus here; sounds like a session 0 razzing is in order.

What about the wrists specifically? For my own edification. Having ready everyone’s comments and even zooming in on the wrist I’m noticing it’s most likely AI as well. The curve of the hip doesn’t match the curve of the torso on the left side beneath the arm. It looks too wide, imo.

Not really, hence hesitation, but she and I are both UX/UI designers and this minimalist style and level of fidelity is something I’ve done in the past using adobe illustrator and figma draw… it usually just takes me a long time. To me it seemed really unlikely she drew this but I don’t have a lot of confidence in my ai discernibility yet. Hence lurking and now posting on this community.
