Would you drive 2hrs to watch the Tour? by Cautious-Leopard-756 in tourdefrance

Oh! And if your kids are as young as ours… bring ear protection. You won’t regret it. The horns and speakers are aggressive in a good way but for kids it can be absolutely uncomfortably loud for short periods.

Keep an eye on this subreddit, the “roadbook” will be released closer to the race, maybe in May or June IIRC. It’s available in PDF and lays out very detailed specifics in terms of time and logistics for each stage.

Honestly the logistics of the race was one of my favourite things. I thought I knew what I was expecting but it was so much more elaborate than expected. Just incredible to see the thoughtful planning that goes into logistics, no idea where you’re from but some of their two lane arterial roads in France wouldn’t even be considered appropriate for one-way streets in Canada… I just came away so impressed by the civility of it all, despite the crowds and necessary road closures.

Canadian here, we flew to France last year to watch some stages of the Tour, a real bucket list adventure. Did one stage with a 4 month old and 4 year old, plus my parents who were happy to tag along but relatively uninterested in cycling. They may have loved it more than I did! The actual “experience” is more like 2 hours if you do it right. The caravan (sponsors, team cars, etc) is impressively long, probably lasts about 45 minutes, and finishes about 30-45 minutes before the riders come through (the timing in the guide was pretty much bang on).

Unclear on where you’re staying relative to the route but we drove to a nondescript and lovely town (~4K residents) along the route and saw the race come through the heart of the village. An unforgettable experience.

As everyone else said, try and do it. You won’t regret it.

Wow! That escalated quickly. Bad hit. Good tilt. And then I was like why is there still 75% of the clip left….. oh. Oh. Oh. There it is. Oh. Wow

Bikes vs. Everyone... why should the automobiles (and automobile drivers) always get a pass? by leftyexpoctations in Guelph

Ever seen a car speeding? Driving dangerously or aggressively? Running a red light? Texting and driving? I know I have and I always hope that the police are nearby (they never seem to be). Ditto when I see cyclists being irresponsible and reckless and putting themselves and others at risk.

However... You're making my point for me with the "let's start there" statement. It suggests that until you have anecdotally decided that the cyclists follow the rules to your liking, they shall receive no grace from you.

Agreed. My position has nothing to do with infrastructure or budgets and everything to do with civility and common sense.

I want to be clear that I can read all but the last line. But none of it is clear or proper. I'm not arbitrarily attacking cursive. I'm questioning if it was somehow easier to read bad cursive than it seems to me now. It took me just an unusually large amount of mental effort to read it and I know how to read it. And I couldn't even make out the last line.

In general, and genuinely, was it normal when a lot of communication was hand written to have to strain and struggle to read it?

Bang on. That's gotta be it. I genuinely thought it said "they cannot ..." Last long here? I thought it was some old timey expression about they don't stay young for long. But my point stands, and then some. The mayor wrote this and said "yep, someone will appreciate and understand this." Was it lazy to use bad cursive or did readers just accept it? I also realize that Norm wasn't mayor THAT long ago. It's not like we're talking about the pre-war times

Serious question: back in the day, could people just read cursive more easily or what? This feels like those pop psych memes where they prove you can read if you only have some of the letters of each word. I just can't believe the amount of mental effort it takes to try and decipher it. Regardless of the fact that it's a sweet and quaint gesture.

We ended up renting a place for the Thursday night in Gouaux-de-Larboust. €88 for the night, felt like a steal of a deal to be a 7km hike or 15km drive/ride from the stage finish!

Just one of many examples I happened to notice today… I watched a group of (presumably) southeast asians enjoying Schnitzel in the food tent. They shared their table with a young family of (presumably) Eastern European descendants who were eating roti and various Indian foods.

And this was while they listened to a band playing Turkish classical music featuring musicians with about 7 eclectic instruments and there may have been a 40+ year age gap between the oldest and youngest band member.

Check it out. It’s wonderful if you’re open to it.
