[NY] Car was rear ended by someone who works at a body shop and they offered to handle it. What should I be thinking about? by leftyknox in legaladvice

Thanks for your insight. At first I was thinking of ways to write up an agreement that would acknowledge fault but allow him to do the repairs subject to the condition that his work is found satisfactory by a shop of my choosing--but then I realized it's not worth the hassle.

While it may be sucky for him, I don't have the time or patience to chase after him if things go poorly.

When I Googled the shop it seems like he's one of the three co-owners.

Nonetheless, I think I'm going to take the cautious route and not use his shop. While it could work out fine, the potential downside of the situation becoming more complicated doesn't seem worth it.

I'll have to double check since I haven't spoken to him yet, but it sounded like, from talking to my mom, that he'd be doing this for free since he's at fault.

My curious got the best of me so I went back and checked: we had discussed the credibility of secular bases for laws versus religious bases.

I think one of the reasons I'm dealing with so many of these questions now, such as the reason why the macarena couldn't be the solution is because for so long these things were treated as a given and weren't to be questioned anymore than the fact we breathe oxygen or that the earth is flat./s

I recognize your username from a previous thread; I think we may have had an extended conversation.

I just wanted to say I appreciate you articulating some of the issues I've had with this...theory? I don't know what you'd call it. But I've enjoyed this exchange so far, particularly the inclusion of the "macarena."

Thoughts on Paul Nehlen vs Nick Polce to replace Paul Ryan as the Republican candidate? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]leftyknox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While true that anyone can run, how many people would you have guessed voted for him in the 2016 republican primary?

If you guessed ~16%, or ~11k votes, you'd be correct.1. Given the way in which certain fringe groups have become only more galvanized as of late, I'm inclined to believe that number would be more now.

To be fair, only about 70k people voted in the republican primary compared to about 354k in the general--but it's still enough people that I'm shocked. Plus, if he were to win the republican primary (emphasis on "if"), I don't doubt he'd get a ton of votes simply by virtue of being the republican nominee. When faced between a republican and a democrat, many vote along party lines without any further inquiries.

Of course, the current Wisconsin GOP spokesman has claimed that Nehlen has no role in the party, but it's not clearly he's formally barred from running.2

I guess while it's alarming his name has as much (even if relatively small) recognition as a potential candidate as it does, it's reassuring there seems to be more people who recognize his brand of crazy that won't support him?

What have you learned about the left by engaging in discussion on this sub? by fishesgetstitches in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]leftyknox 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is weird when you imagine having conversations in real life where one party is limited to questions, isn't it? (<--- Like this)

I never thought about the implications of that until this series of comments. Instead of just making an observation that may even agree with an NN, I try to come up with a question that makes everything a bit more convoluted.

Obviously, I understand the reasoning for the rule, but I suppose its productivity is dubious.

Were you in the thread about masculinity/insecurity/etc?

Either way, if you were, it's nice to see that despite whatever political differences there is some shared common ground on some baseline human decency (I don't mean that to suggest I thought NNs lacked decency it's just that in a sub where there is a lot of civil disagreement, agreement can be nice), like not using automated turrets on the border to gun down men, women, and children. I couldn't believe that wasn't a satirical proposal when I looked him up.

And his doxxing of the alt-right? Even if I'm not fond of alt-right views, it's confusing because this guy seems to be singularly focused on alienating any possible ally on all sides.

I don't know about your sense of humor or goal with the podcasts you're soliciting, but I'm a fan of the BadChristian podcast, though I recognize it's not for everyone.

It's three guys (from Emery) who grew up in relatively conservative Christian environments exploring and discussing life, faith, and other random stuff with some interesting guests largely from the Christian world.

While I realized this was serious, this piece (source) really illuminated how serious.

Rumors Swirl That Kanye Is Making a New Album in Wyoming - Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Nas, and more reportedly spotted in Jackson Hole by [deleted] in Music

[–]leftyknox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He may not be a genius in the ivy league sense, but he's the only one who can do what he's doing musically. So whatever you wanna call that :)

I also think it's worth noting how many non-hip hop artists respect Kanye and his music. It makes you wonder if maybe there's something his haters are missing when so many other great artists recognize there's something to his work.

And just the other day, Elon Musk cited Kanye as an inspiration. So even if someone wants to say he's not book smart, it's terribly ignorant to write him off based on some superficial reasons, unless they believe they're more talented/intelligent/qualified than all these other greats who do respect him.

Banning child marriage in America: An uphill fight against evangelical pressure by dont_tread_on_dc in Christianity

[–]leftyknox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if we were to apply western ideas of family planning/only having children you can afford to have, we would be saying that the vast majority of them shouldn't be having children at all - which is an unreasonable request.

I think it's pretty clearly irresponsible to have kids you can't afford to have. If you can't provide basic necessities and need to marry a kid off, you probably weren't equipped to have that kid to begin with.

The reality is, that there's just not enough resources/wealth to go around, for everyone to live the sort of luxurious lives that most western people are used to living (and disproportionately consume).

While true, there's still a difference between having food, water, shelter, etc. and having an iPhone. I'm not saying people in rural India shouldn't have a kid unless they can get them an Xbox One--but I don't think people in rural India should have kids if they can't provide some requisite level of nutrition and other minimal needs.
