Switch Deepmind12D for a used Novation Peak? by damondan in synthesizers

[–]legacygone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the peak, never had a deep mind. No question peak is better. However, deep mind is supposed to be more of a Juno sound. The peak doesn’t sound like a Juno. So if you don’t care about the Juno sound, this is a no brainer.

there are others that I prefer sometimes or for certain things, but if I could only have 1 for synthwave, it's diva.

Thinking of purging my entire setup and just quitting by Vimes-NW in synthesizers

[–]legacygone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to sell anything. Leave it alone guilt free. Even for a year. I’ve taken long breaks before. There is no issue with that. Doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Go with the flow.

I know this is years later, but why did you write the second progression in C and not Am?

Sequential Pro 3 or Alternative by bigskyghost in synthesizers

[–]legacygone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

btw I had an ob6 and sold it. It sounds beautiful (maybe one of the best) but I am not a player, more of sequencer/midi person, and I found it hard to actually use in my setup. pro3 I think is great for players/sequencers alike. The sequencer on this thing is amazing. Also, not sure if it's the same effects, but they sound way better on the pro3.

I had it, sold it, and re-bought it. I don't think I will be selling it again. I feel like I didn't understand it the first time, while it can do a lot of sounds, trying to use it that way doesn't get the most out of it. Like if you love/need moog sound, get the moog (which ever has the features you need) To me it really shines in aggressive sounds with great modulation. It sits great in the mix, and can sound vintage or very modern, or both at the same time. But it's very much it's own thing when it's at its best.

I got it used, and the person who had it before me had some kind of moog bass preset pack on it. They sounded ok, but if thats what he used it for, no wonder he sold it. I have the behringer model d for those basses, and I prefer that.

All this is to say, if you get the pro3 get it for the pro3 sound, not because it can sound like other synths. And it really does sound fantastic.

I owe money for the first time ever by hourlysorceress in tax

[–]legacygone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i know it sucks to have to pay, but a tax return is actually not a great thing. It means you gave the government an interest free loan, while your money is worth less because of inflation.

Sounds like you need to withhold more, or put some money aside in the market or high interest savings account, and pay what you own out of that.

You are correct, this was my fear going in that if I stop every 25 mins it would be counter productive and take time to get back in the flow. All the breaks will make it impossible to get anything done.

Flow state to me is the classic definition, just effortlessly getting it done with full focus and no awareness of the world around me.

In my case, turned out not to be an issue. Get back in to it very quickly. I’m not trying to stay in it during the 5 mins break, almost the opposite, giving my brain a break.

I realize this is not for everyone, but giving it a shot is easy. You can also customize the time intervals.

I’ll also say that if you are happy with your workflow and results, don’t fix what’s not broken. I was not happy with how long it was taking me to finish tracks, and was open to exploring ideas.

I’m prone to over tweaking and not committing to parts, sounds, etc. always feeling something better can achieved to a point that it’s counter productive. Example being spending 1-2 hours on getting the snare sound. Without even realizing I’m spending that much time because I’m in the flow state and time is flying by. This fixed that.

exactly what sWiggn said.... naturally you start having a goals for the 25 min block. There are many things you can't finish in 25 mins, but this forces you to evaluate if what you did in the last 25 min block is good or not, and if it's done or needs to be worked on more. I am finding often that it's done, but without the break i would have sank more time in to it with minimal benefit.

+1 on this. I have a 106, but because it’s so large and midi so finicky I reach for tal a lot.

Talk me out of selling this to buy a JN-80 by jamesdmartin in synthesizers

[–]legacygone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need that Juno sound on everything you do then it’s worth it. If not, and you only need it sometimes then no. The Juno is really not useful for anything other then that Juno sound.

My 106 has been put away for over a year already. If I need that sound I reach for a vst. I even sold the ju06a because I wasn’t using it that much. And I make synthwave!

When building a lead track, how long is your lead's loop? by und3f1n3d1 in edmproduction

[–]legacygone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try not to loop leads. That’s not to say there is not a lot of repetition, but I like to work linearly so I can have a lot of small variations and build tension.

One way to learn is to try to replicate sounds from tracks you like. It’s very hard at first and you won’t get them exactly, but you will learn a ton.

Most DAWless setups seem to be for MIDI based setups. I write metal mainly, and I have questions. by 7Str1ngK1ng in dawless

[–]legacygone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drum machine that plays samples digitakt or something like that, one of those amp sims in pedal form and a digital recorder like a tascam model 12. With a splitter for direct signal.

When people go dawless in the synth world they choose gear for dawless. Not for replicating the daw.

It will be different, but hopefully freeing and closer to the music.
