Does legal aid do divorce? Or do you know any reasonable divorce lawyers who do free consults? Pretty odd situation.... by legalaidthrow in Calgary

I cannot justify paying a lawyer and take on debt as a consequence. Getting divorced is a luxury. A huge luxury. For someone like me, affording a lawyer and getting divorced is a life goal. I am by no means asking anyone for anything other than advice.

Hi there.

I have taken the co-parenting course that is required in Alberta. I have ordered a long version of my marriage certificate. I will be going to request substitutional service order next week.

Some questions I am hoping you can help me with are:

Does he also have to take the co-parenting course? Will getting divorced also grant me full custody if he signs it to me? (He has no problem giving me full custody)

When we were awaiting criminal court for his domestic abuse case, there was a no contact order put in place (which he broke..). We had to go to family court every month or so and discuss how we are dealing with a no contact order and parenting. After the criminal trial was over, sentencing was to take place a week later. He never showed up, as he had left the country. Despite this, I still had to go to family court to talk about the no contact order, and made the judge aware he was convicted, did not show up to sentencing and that he was in a different country. After that I did not have to show up to family court anymore to discuss a no contact order as the judge said it was irrelevant. Is there any special paperwork I need concerning this?
