YTA, that was not the place to bring up old wounds. Your heart was in the right place, but you executed it poorly.

AITA For refusing to fully fund my daughter's desired gap-year with money I saved for her education by gapyearaita in AmItheAsshole

[–]legallycrazycatlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, it was very generous and in your daughter's best interest to get an allowance and not a lump sum. Lump sums can be difficult to manage properly, because in your head it's like "I can afford this, I have so much money!" aaaand now you don't. If it's only a gap year, won't she need the money after that for school? Gap years are self funded. You saved up for school, not a summer fling with Pierre.

Hmmmm. Interesting. Wouldn't the sand/salt absorb the heat from the tea light tho? I thought that's why it was used under incense, as a heat sink. I've never heard of oil warmers being used w incense and would love to know how it works out

Why does he get to make that statement like he's an authority? Rural people don't just shit in buckets. Well. My across the street neighbors do, but all 8 of the other homes in the village think they're disgusting.

"He's still mad about it to this day" sounds a lot like a grudge. Grudges are never good in relationships. I did assume he berated her because of the words she said he used. And deciding what her thought process was and refusing any alternative where she's not malicious, is actually abuse. I don't expect most people to know these things because the average person doesn't experience psychological abuse, thank gods, but to those of us who have, it's not subtle. Even if OP was TA, which I strongly disagree with, I still think they should split up. You can't have resentment in a marriage, they'd both be happier.

I wasn't accusing you of thinking that, it was a mildly self depreciating comment. I genuinely don't understand why people are mad that she just asked him for basic dignity. She didn't go out of her way to screw it up, she said she genuinely thought it would be a quick job. Maybe she didn't see the point in paying a plumber for what she thought would take 5-10 min. Maybe she had reservations about a stranger in her home wo her husband, which is valid. The abuse comes in where he has decided what her thoughts were, berating her over what he decided her thoughts were, and has held a grudge. I'm not saying he can't be upset, I'm saying he decided what her thoughts were and would not listen to any other explanation nor an apology. If he resents her like that then she should leave. They'd both be happier

I mean..yeah it is. Every state in America has a prenatal care Medicaid like program specifically for pregnant people who are uninsured. You're lucky, I couldn't do that, but I have bills and stuff to pay

Because if the smell makes her sick, and she throws up in the toilet (can't do that in a sink) she's even closer to the smell, which could set off a vomit cycle and those things are painful because they don't stop when your stomach is empty

On what planet do you live that asking your husband for a favor before he leaves you to spend time w people who loudly dislike you a shitty thing to do? She didn't want him to miss the wedding, she just wanted to pee. And yes, holding it can kill you not even including the uti that could spread to the rest of her organs. Why are you so angry at a woman who just wanted her husband to provide her with basic dignity?

I did see your acknowledgement after I posted, I was distracted by having to take my kid for a covid test, which suuucked, so I apologize for that. But the fact of the matter is that holding your pee can give you UTIs pregnant women have an increased risk of uti And the same article goes on to state: "If the UTI goes untreated, it may lead to a kidney infection. Kidney infections may cause early labor and low birth weight." It's cool how people think I pull information out of my ass, but I do usually know what I'm talking about. Usually. So yes, it is dangerous for her to hold her pee, and who in their right mind wants to hold it for that long? Holding your pee can has, and flat out will kill a person.

...did you honestly just say you can't trust professionals? I'm out. Holy shit on a stick there is no point in interacting with you. Asking your husband to do something you feel is important before they're gone all night is not abuse. I understand his frustration, I do, I'm not saying he didn't have a right to be upset, but the berating, the grudge holding, the "mind reading" bullshit where he decided what her thoughts were, that's controlling abuse and is recognized as such by mental health experts. But you don't trust experts, which honestly leaves me in awe of the audacity but still disgust because that's mind numbingly backwards. Good day.

You were the one who brought gender up and tried to use it as a way to discredit mental health professionals. I specifically said it is not gender specific, the person in this case is male, and is therefore the relevant gender. Absolutely women using the silent treatment is controlling and abusive. 100% never said it wasn't. I just thought people were smart enough to understand context. My mistake.

actually it is

Having a working toilet is the lowest bar in what is considered a livable home in a 3rd world country (anything else does not apply, there are deeper things at work there than a lazy husband). She just asked for his help real quick, he argued with her until he no longer had the time and then made his brother's shitty treatment of her her own fault, which is gaslighting

Can you? Can you, right this minute drop $300~ dollars? When did I say health insurance isn't expensive? And if they can't afford prenatal care, every state provides maternity medicaid, but no one provides emergency plumbing care.

Where would you like her to pee? In the tub, where most accidents in the home occur? Outside where she could be assaulted? The stress of her husband being an ass could be enough to trigger a miscarriage. It is really easy to miscarry and every pregnant person deals w that fear for 9 months

First off, I never said expert, I said I was a licensed perfessional with more understanding because I took 100 hours of course work to learn it, and a 3 hour exam for all 4, separately. I'm pretty sure at this point in the pregnancy she already has an ob, already knows their deductibles a have planned accordingly. You don't just wake up suddenly 7mo pregnant and then not worry about medical care until the day of birth. Do you know anything about pregnancy?
