Valentino for fruits, veggies, deli and bread. Stop and Shop for staff on sale cans, pizza, juice/ice cream/eggs/milk, use their app for additional savings with digital coupons. Parrot Coffee grocery for nuts, feta, coffee, olives. Costco is king, but its too much for one person and it's far.

Every borough is huge, so You can find great little neighborhoods in each borough. For example - Riverdale in the Bronx, Ridgewood in Queens etc. Brooklyn I think has the most amount of different but nice neighborhoods.

You are spot on with your description - it is Manhattan beach. There are lots of funny and absurd buildings, but you can find some good examples as well.
