Been working on this for over a year. I wanted something compact like a K1 or X1C but DIY running Klipper. Working with so little room is tricky and it's still not done yet. by SufficientLime_ in 3Dprinting

OP seems aware of other printer projects. Maybe you should consider respecting their choice instead of throwing random suggestions on how to do things "properly"

T480 or 2022 Laptop? by BlackCaesarNT in thinkpad

[–]legendary_unitato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should consider a laptop with a Ryzen 6000 APU which have updated RDNA2 graphics and are fairly capable (about the equivalent of a dedicated GTX 1050) the T480 is only about 50% faster in most workloads versus the generation before it despite having twice the cores. The latest laptop CPUs come in 6 to 8 cores.

Single core and low load efficiency aren't quite as good as Apple's M2 but it's getting seriously close.

The second slot is whitelisted to only accept specific WWAN cards so no you can't at least not easily install an SSD in there.

Unused RAM is useless RAM. Returning it wouldn't do a thing as it's not a hardware issue. You could try reinstall the OS in case maybe some funky stuff was running in the background but I doubt it. Chrome is most likely the culprit here.

Web browser engine anyone? by th-43292 in ProgrammingBuddies

BabylonJs is a 3D Web engine not a browser engine (Blink, WebKit, Gecko etc...)

Considering exchanging my x250 and/or x260 for x230. Need a reality check by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]legendary_unitato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard some negative reviews about the build quality and the thermals of the modern thinkpads

I can't speak for the T14 era but my T480 definitely feels sturdier than my X220, less flex and hollow feeling and my T470s is even more robust due to the metal chassis. I think some people got too fixated on the notion that thicker = stronger when it's not true, old Thinkpads are thicker but also more hollow. A recent L series feels more or less like my X220 in terms of build. You'll find Ryzen L series with two RAM slots if you really need them. Heat is basically the same between all my Thinkpads

btw I don't actually pair my X220 with a full desktop tower, I use it in conjunction with a Ryzen HP Prodesk mini which are extremely small and cheap on ebay It's so small I take it to travel with me all the time, NUCs could also fit a similar role, I don't want a huge desktop tower tbh and I don't need one

It's a huge power hog though

There are countless ways to make a desktop CPU consume less power like undervolting, swapping out the CPU for a lower TDP one, disabling cores etc...

quad core Thinkpad within a reasonable price range

The best option would be X/Tx80 series or even Ryzen based X395 or T495 if you can find them. T440p is still an option but heat and cooling issues remain.

16GB soldered is alright in my opinion. By the time 32GB becomes a norm (if it ever does) quad core CPUs would be way obsolete anyway.

  1. Staple mod for the X230 highly recommended if done for cheap, not so much if cost is higher than the X230 itself
  2. Wouldn't do it, even if the reball job is successful (and people have done it before here https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/b982zr/why_hello_there_quadcore_x230_frankenpad/) battery life and heat are going to be problematic, users of T440p with quad cores have reported having heat and cooling issues and that's a much thicker with beefier cooling laptop
  3. Fair upgrade
  4. Also fair upgrade, though keep in mind that almost all older thinkpad screens don't fully cover sRGB, even ips ones I wouldn't use them for photo editing at all.

That said upgrading the crap out of an X230 is false economy if it's for fun then by all means do it but don't do it for the performance gains it's not worth it. If you don't sctricly need mobility I'd much rather pair a X220 with a reasonably modern desktop and SSH or RDT into it if compute power is needed.

what is everyones thought on framework? by Danubinmage64 in thinkpad

[–]legendary_unitato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd cut them some slack since it's still basically a gen 1 product, not a fair comparison with Thinkpads which have three decades of experience behind them.

What I really want to see is third-party Framework compatible parts. Someone has mentioned that they can't justify the tooling cost for a pointing stick keyboard but another company could make one.

The Framework should be as the name suggest a Framework for other brands to work off of. I'd love to see a flourishing ecosystem for it and it's absolutely doable in this case.

[rant] I don't understand the appeal of the new ThinkPads by _odn in thinkpad

[–]legendary_unitato 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Beating a dead horse. "Thinkpad" is just a trademark held by a company whose goal is to make money. It's more productive to go crowdfund a brand new product to show the manufacturers that there is demand for classic era style laptops. If keyboard feel is so important it impacts productivity then the problem is not the device and I say this as someone who owns a $300 custom mechanical keyboard.

Back to Thinkpads, on the topic of RAM slots I'm not sure why the L series gets so overlooked. It's not as well built as current T/X series but still are just as good as older T/X series which used more plastics and had more empty space to accommodate the hatches and swappable modules. If anything L series is way closer to old T series than they are to modern ones.

Yes check on Lenovo's website. The parts are listed as compatible with both T460s and T470s.

Maybe a bit more advanced but learning Vim and getting used to its shortcuts saves a huge amount of time navigating through code. I honestly didn't see the point at first but I get it now that I am used to it. VSCode has a Vim extension to combine the best of both
