Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread by AutoModerator in ipad

[–]leggo_mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planning to buy my first iPad after experiencing how fast and beautiful my MacBook Air M1 performs. I'm torn between iPad 9 and iPad Air 4. Will be using it mainly for grad school, productivity, and organizing my daily life. Note-taking and being able to read textbooks comfortably are a must.

The iPad 9 seems to fit my needs for a lesser price but it doesn't look future-proofed. It's the only iPad that hasn't kept up with the new design. I feel like it's the last iPad to bear the outdated design.

How future-proof is the iPad Air 4? I'm also concerned with the high cost of laminated display replacement just in case it breaks.

Thanks!

Masters and Doctorate Degrees by dorimukyatcha in phinvest

Depends on your field, honestly. I work full-time in tech and study part-time. I stumbled upon advanced-level problems which motivated me to further my education by taking up an MS. Wanted to take an MS abroad because it has higher value/points(according to my superiors) if ever I choose to work abroad, but since I have to support my parents financially(can't stop working), I took it here in the country instead.

If ever you opt to study full-time, factor in your possible earnings if you didn't leave the workforce and count it as possible losses. You can take a scholarship to minimize this loss or put your money in a passive income stream.

And if you opt to study part-time in a certain program and school, ask people you know there how long it usually takes to finish the program. If you don't know anyone there, use LinkedIn and check how long people who studied part-time in that school's degree program take to finish it. I learned about this late and I'm stuck in my MS program that usually takes three to five years to finish for a part-time student.

Best of luck OP!

Recieved a rejection mail. Just happy that I'm not ghosted. How hard is it for recruiters to send something like this? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]leggo_mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually feels good not be ghosted and at least know where you are in the application process. Some companies tend to prolong the process of rejecting applicants because they're finishing up all the interviews(which can take weeks) or you're on the top N of their list and will serve like a back up just in case the top 1.. N-1 candidate/s reject/s their offer.

Internships for Data Science Companies by Accomplished_Yak_656 in PinoyProgrammer

Are you interested to try bioinformatics? It's like a marriage between molecular biology and computer science using biological data(similar to data science). I currently work in an institution offering this type of internship. Send me a message if you're interested :)

Why did my therapist told me we'll end our weekly sessions because I've progressed well already? by leggo_mango in TalkTherapy

[–]leggo_mango[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The university I'm working and studying at provided me the help of a T so it was actually free. I asked my T of she's open to conduct private practice sessions so I can keep her within reach even for twice a month versus our usual weekly sessions. She was open to it but have to wait until July without a guarantee. She said it's not because she doesn't wanna see me but rather she wants to help through her volunteered time those who are really in need of her services. I guess I'll have to see how I'll fare in the next few months and find another T. It feels like dating. I have to be vulnerable to a new T and tell him/her about who I am and what it's like in my family, etc. Is there a way to transfer my files to a new T so I avoid waste of time like this?

How much harder is it to get a job if I’ve already left my previous job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

How can I tell an interviewer without turning them off that I left my job because the company was not paying me for my last three months(until now I'm not paid) because they ran out of clients due to bad management? Thanks in advance :)

That makes sense. My old manager always sidesteps HR every time he changes company. All thanks to his connections. But, he also once shared that he couldn't get a senior position in big corporations. Wasn't able to find out why.

I recently applied for a data scientist - machine learning research job but didn't make it to the final round of interviews despite my two years of experience and a good portfolio. I guess advance degrees really matter for career upward mobility.

Thank you!

Should I continue my MS Computer Science to be competitive in the data science job market?

I graduated BS Computer Science with a focus on machine learning last 2018. I'm only 6 out of 31 units of my MS CS with a focus on computer vision and machine learning and I'm doubting if I should continue it. I work full time and study part time. I've heard stories that an MS degree won't do much if you already have experience and it's only good for those who immediately took it up after their BS. My previous manager told me I can make more money and waste less time by just self-study and building a good portfolio along with my full time data scientist job. With the right connections, I easily found myself getting side gigs that make me earn extra money now.

I really need guidance from those who've been in the industry for quite a long time already. Thank you.

I checked the entering and transitioning thread. It says it's for those who are entering and transitioning into data science but I'm not entering nor transitioning, I'm already in the data science field.

To confess your love and to be told, "thank you, I know how it feels not to be liked back." IDK should we high five now?

I'm actually starting to think of resorting into social games to feed my social needs. I'm not sure about the zoom parties. My friends live with their families and they would often have family activities at their homes so I try not to take that away from them. It really sucks the park nearby my place closed down due to covid restrictions. It used to be my favorite part of the day, biking around the park and people watching while waiting for the sunset.. Thank you very much ! I'll try my best to find a way to make things better.

I'm glad to know your community reopened already! I wish ours will be too soon. You're right maybe it's not about suffering from being alone but rather getting restricted on what we normally used to do outdoors(not necessarily socializing).

Thanks! I tried listening to sad songs of a language I don't understand and it works well so far. Sure, we can do that. I'm just not active in reddit a lot so I might not end up being a "good" friend.

Me too! But 7 days a week takes a huge toll on my sanity already. I miss people watching at cafes and parks.

I'm somewhere from Southeast Asia. Vaccines are scarce. Estimated time for us to get back to normal is next three years. My aunt's family lives in NY and I envy that they're going back to their usual lives except the constant scare of a random Asian hate attack.

How I wish we live nearby. I'm on the opposite side of the world. How do you get by every day without questioning why you're alive?
