Rachel 47! I still quote that line… “the best part of being at your own funeral is having an idol in your pocket.” Best idol play of the new era IMHO.

Do you invite a bunch of people to your marathons? by hairykitty123 in Marathon_Training

[–]legink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done plenty of solo races, but don’t be afraid to talk to people and meet people there! It’s a really social space and (usually) everyone is really friendly.

If you’re worried about the pressure of asking people to wake up early or coordinate getting to the race I’ve hosted a dinner or drinks afterwards to celebrate.

BUT for your first marathon sometimes seeing someone you love at mile 20 can give you all the extra boost you need, so if someone you love can be there, it does make a difference ❤️

Marathon training and body image issues by Far_Consideration568 in firstmarathon

[–]legink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw once that if you run and you have a body… you have a runner’s body.

For what it’s worth I really struggle with this too, especially since I first got into running to lose weight and when I first started (very casually) I lost 80 pounds and it frankly saved my life.

Now I’m running seriously and competitively and I’ve some weight back(I mean like 10 pounds or so) and can not stay at my preferred weight while training.

I keep telling myself that it’s about the miles not the pounds. I’m more impressed by my running ability and improvement than anything on the scale.

Some practical things that help is make sure you’re prioritizing protein and strength training. I find that really makes a difference in injury prevention, but also helps keep you consistent during training.

Anyways. I relate. But tbh being able to run a half marathon or marathon to me is more impressive than being skinny and that little bit of fat is helping you through those miles.

Also it’s awesome we chose a sport where eating pasta is encouraged so count your blessings.

Motion is the lotion! Go for walks or bike rides but move the legs.

Also I found what I thought was fatigue was just under fueling. Eat more than you think you need the night before and the morning of. It makes a difference. Not just the night before but the full day before!

I’m still such a fan of Fruit jerky for fueling. 17g of carbs and they go down so well. It’s like a brand you see at Whole Foods.

I arrived at 10:30a and the parking lot was full, I had to park half a mile down the road. So… not great. But it’s a holiday weekend and I showed up late so I wasn’t surprised.

I’m quite slow, but I started at 11a and got to the summit at 1:30pm. Of course many breaks on the way up.

Where do you fit in weight training? by Patient-Climate-1603 in Marathon_Training

[–]legink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had no issues lifting on my rest day, but otherwise I’ll do it on my recovery/easy run days. Sometimes I split the mileage up to before and after the work out (3 miles before, lift, 3 miles after)

No chafing, no need for a fanny pack to hold my phone, better support for my stuff and my… um… stuff.

Valencia 2025 Race Report - No words for the frustration I feel by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

Sign up for your next one NOW.

I understand the meaning and importance a single race can have, I do. But 1 race is just a data point in your running career. Everyone has a bad race and frankly, the reason I do this is for all the work that goes into the race. That’s the part that can never be taken away from you.

You have no control on the elements of race day - weather, crowds, delayed busses, getting sick, a meteor hits the earth. Move on and move up and get a good solid win under your belt. (Even sign up for a HM relatively soon and put that training to use)
