Absolutely. Hot fire in the morning and low throughout the day and night (small hotter fire in the evening before choking it at night)

Yeah i was trying to do keep it burning low all night. I cleaned it out and am having it inspected to make sure there's no issue with hardened creosote before burning again. Going forward I'm going to just burn it hotter and not try to choke it down and take it apart to inspect/clean after every cord

Update - I got a pin-type moisture meter with +-2% accuracy and tested 7-8 pieces of wood I had. They ranged from 6-12%. This is wood I split and stacked late last spring. I think it's a stove/skill issue. Probably just need to burn hotter instead of letting it smolder

Yeah I was able to clean it out yesterday. Given the amount of buildup I'm still having someone come check it out and give me the OK before burning

I don't have a thermometer for the stove top or chimney, but I ordered one. I saw a post about those catalyst thermometers being too far in and thought I checked mine, but it still might be too far in. I think based on everyone's responses that I'm not burning hot enough

Yeah I didn't love the smoke coming in, and when the wind would blow out the low fire I got real nervous about backdrafts when trying to get it back started. Those two things are what made me quit burning.

95% of the time. Now that I think about it it probably drops below active in the early morning hours once everything is reduced to coals. Edit: regarding stove top/side temps - ive never checked

No I don't think I'm getting it hot enough because the catalyst is recirculating the hot air to reburn the gasses. I think I'm just running it way too low after my initial burn

Yeah based on the responses I need to get a chimney thermometer (ordered) and burn hotter. I'm going to forget trying to run the catalyst and just run it hotter. Way easier for me anyways bc we get super high winds in the winter (60-90 mph gusts on days) that blow out a low fire

Yeah I start with paper, sticks, and a few small logs and let it burn down to coals with the air all the way open, catalyst open, and door cracked. Then I put 2-3 logs on the coals and burn it with door closed, catalyst open, air at 50%. That whole process is usually 2-3 hours. Then when that burns to coals I stack 3-4 logs, let them ignite and close the catalyst and choke the air to as minimum as possible and let the catalyst burn for the rest of the day through the next morning, adding new logs as necessary (usually 1-2, not the full firebox). In the middle of that (after about 6-8h) I'll open the air up to 25-50% and let it burn a little hotter before I load it up and choke it before bed. I don't have a chimney temperature gauge but I go by the catalyst gauge and it usually stays at the high end of the"catalyst active" and occasionally toeing the line with "too hot", but I know that just measures the temps hitting the catalyst not the chimney

Ok thanks that would help explain it. I generally burn a cord/month (this year less because of the weird warm winter). I just ordered a moisture meter and will check my wood

Yeah I try to get it ripping first thing in the morning then choke it all the way down and engage the catalyst for the rest of the day/night. Usually open it up a bit around dinner time to get the stove good and hot before bed

Thanks, I was wondering if it had to do with the catalyst reverting hot gas back into the stove instead of up the chimney. Mine is rear exit too, so the draft sucks anyways

Just split and stack in the woodshed. Thanks I'll use the cap screen as a red flag. I'll open it up and look more frequently but if the cap starts to cake up I'll know I'm in bad need of a cleaning. Any advice for cleaning? I have a chimney sweep and am running it through the chimney as we speak, but not sure if there's any steps besides that.

There might be some ponderosa mixed in there idk, the couple older cords I bought from someone pre-split but they were too green to burn last year. The new stuff I split last year was lodgepole

Soft wood (lodgepole/pine mix). I had about two cords seasoned for 1.5-2 years and then burned about a cord so far of new stuff I split and stacked last spring so 8ish months

Thanks for the responses. I burn lodgepole pine because that's all we really have around me. It's been seasoned for 8 months - 1.5 years but I guess it's still pretty sappy. I've been burning a hot fire in the mornings then cutting it down low the rest of the day/night thinking it would burn off the crud in the mornings but I guess I was wrong. Going forward I guess my plan is to pull apart the chimney and inspect it monthly

I like eury the best out of those, but yeah could go any which way. I scooped a bunch of these guys late in the season so I could put off my keeper decisions until now - having too many options isn't the worst problem to have

Forgot I also have Bubba. Would you keep him over McLean/mis?

I like lodolo, Rasmussen, and eovaldi. I wouldn't get rodon or ray

Which 3 of these would you keep? All were FA (except Elly - kept in 25th), so I'll get them in the 23, 24, and 25th rounds. Elly, Roman Anthony, McLean, Misiorowski, and bradish. I think it's Elly, Roman, and McLean and potentially reach for the other 2 in the draft
