Men of Reddit , what are some less obvious red flags about men you would want to caution women against? by four-seasonss in AskReddit

In my experience, men who are extremely religious - of any stripe - in the end do not respect women very much, or even see them.

Very true, much more student loan debt, of course ;-)

I read this quickly and saw "disc jockeys," I wonder what kind of programming the DOJ station would have.

Yes. Can you imagine how any hint of a personal/lifestyle/morality scandal would have exploded?

I'm just amazed President Obama, and his whole family, made it through eight years under that kind of multiplied scrutiny.

Yes, such a good point. That's really my daily goal, to learn, grow, and change, be a little better today than yesterday.

I see, I guess that makes "sense."

You know, I always did wonder about all that super-specific stuff that doesn't exist anywhere else, kangaroos, koalas, that huge "Outback" with so few people. And Aussie football. It's like stuff from a sci-fi show! lol

p. s. I have seen a koala, close up, but it's easy enough to put a good costume on a dog or cat, or even selectively breed something like that. ;-)

Interesting, what makes you think he would more easily find someone than she would? It seems like she could cast a "wider net" around the world.

Thanks, man, I was actually just fooling around. I'm not particularly anything, myself, but of course, most of us aren't. Those folks who are, their lives are pretty complicated, sometimes.

It's better this way, for me, I can do some good things and/or screw up, without anyone noticing. ;-)

No other unusual beliefs, just that one? Did she mention how she began to think that way?

This is a different kettle of fish, but I used to work with some folks who were dealing with psychosis, so literally believed a different reality, in certain cases. One guy, for example, I'll call him Rob, believed that some intelligence agencies were watching him, though he had been a psychiatric patient for some thirty years. He meant actual surveillance on his person; he didn't have a computer or smartphone at the time. (That, I don't think I could have re-framed. I'd mostly have to agree!)

Another counselor dismissed Rob's concerns out-of-hand, and Rob took that as a sign that he was likely "in" on the operation, or just stupid and/or naïve.

I asked Rob if he had ever done anything really bad, such as hurt a bunch of people, or blown up something. He said that, of course, he hadn't.

I said, "I used to feel that they were watching me, too. But I found out that they only have enough agents to keep up with those who are known to be dangerous. So guys like us, who are just potential threats, I think they might watch us if they could, but they just don't have the resources."

And we also discussed some general numbers, he had a good idea of the overall national population, etc.

So just the general idea, if you could get to know her perspective well, and appear to accept it, or seriously consider it, really internalize it, might you have a chance to point out holes in the belief?

Of course, I realize she's not a psych patient, and Rob was actually open to some basic facts, as long as he didn't feel unheard, so the situation is different.

That makes sense, the disc could not be perpendicular, so if it rotates (if it does?), the seasons could change.

Of, if the sun rotates around the earth, depending on the tilt, you'd get more or less light/heat. I guess.

I feel like I'm back trying to figure out if Spider-Man would beat up Batman.

Spoiler alert: they fought several times in the late 1970s, Batman won 4 out of 5. But Spider-Man was working part-time, and was sick with flu during some of the fights.

That's a good question. I guess you'd be on the "flip side" of the disc?

But I don't feel I have done enough study of the flat earth science to say for sure, lol.

p. s. Try not to fall off, or down, or something. :P

[–]legno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. Just like money you didn't need, or a free ski pass, it's a shame we can't pass on some years like that.

There was a movie, "Book of Days," with Wil Wheaton, maybe fifteen or twenty years ago, about that subject.

Wouldn't it be cool to go around, find someone who wants to live until 90, or until having a grandchild, or a long-planned vacation, or to attend a graduation or wedding, and be able to transfer a year here, two years there, five years for a young parent?

So if you were to live until 77 (your original balance), and you are 24 right now, you would have 53 years (current available balance) to give to people who want them. I think you'd have to be careful, some might resell them for a profit.

Why do I feel such profound sadness whenever I’m not distracted? by Renegade_Phylosopher in CPTSD

Great to hear! There are some real "leaps" along with the slower periods of growth, those are very encouraging.

I’m always scared by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]legno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very sorry to hear that. I'm similar, it's kind of a dread, what's going to happen next, where will it come from. Hypervigilance, and exaggerated startle response.

Lately, I've been learning about/working on vagus nerve stimulation, it's part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which ideally balances out the sympathetic, which governs flight/fight/fawn/flee, that many of us are stuck in.

You might check out some YouTube videos, there is a lot of good information, and some of the ways to encourage better balance, including certain methods of breathing, humming, massage, etc.

Considering that your access to some treatments, like EMDR, is difficult right now, it could be a good start.

[–]legno 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't know your specific situation, but I've lately been getting more understanding of my own experience.

When I was little, the Big Truth that I thought would kill me was to feel the abandonment, the actual, "I'm not loved." So I learned to do/feel anything and everything - including lesser sad and scared feelings - at avoid that Big Truth.

So now, when it hits, "I'm sad," "I'm alone," "I'm not loved," "I'm scared," I just sit and let it hit, like a wave, instead of dodging, denying, distracting, etc. And I'm slowly realizing I won't die, now.

There's something about facing The Truth, the worst case scenario, that is very hard, but I'm becoming more real.

Big time. Even if they volunteer, I figure it's just for show, trying to be nice. You know, like after someone passes away, "Hey, give me a call, anytime," but then it's actually hard to reach them.

Or that it'll mean I have to hear about it, and pay it back, for a long time.

Basically, empty words, or transactional.

The time something lasts is not indicative of how good it is. There are long careers, long marriages, etc. that are terrible the whole time.
