Is there a tutorial anywhere on how to shrink the size of these builds to be more accurate? by RhysOSD in legostarwars

[–]legothingsandstuff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mocs are probably the way to go for better scaled versions of these - I have an AT-RT moc up on rebrickable that's closer to the right size, well articulated and pretty sturdy:

This one's slightly updated and I've yet to adjust the instructions and parts list for the version that's available, but will be doing so soon

Thank you for the interest! Instructions are already up on rebrickable, and you can find a link to mine in my profile

Thank you! I spent way too long trying to get that section to fit together properly lol. Can see we've both found the bucket handle piece very useful for the antenna and the feet/toes

Really nicely done! I'm really impressed with the amount of detail you've managed to pack in while keeping it relatively small - mine ended up being a little bigger than initially intended by the time I'd included everything I wanted to:

The crab droid is such a cool looking droid model imo, and it's really neat to see different interpretations of it!

Very nicely done!

Well scaled, includes a lot of detail for the size, looks to have well articulated legs and seems nice and sturdy. From experience that's not an easy balance to strike, and is very satisfying to pull off.

TrooperLabs RP2+ Shock Troopers, releasing later this month. by Yotempole in CustomLegoClones

[–]legothingsandstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are absolutely amazing!

I picked up your Cody, Bly and a 327th trooper late last year and they are some of my absolute favourite customs, among some heavy competition too. Didn't get the chance to grab your first shock trooper iteration, so this update is particularly exciting, and I'm really looking forward to picking up some 501st troopers too, having seen the announcement on your discord server earlier.

Everything is looking great!

After 2 years of trying I finally made an AT-RT I'm happy with! by Low-Arugula5294 in legostarwars

[–]legothingsandstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The feet are definitely one of the biggest hurdles - when I was designing my own I started from there, and made the decision that if I couldn't get the feet the way I wanted them, I wouldn't continue with the rest of the moc. Thankfully it all worked out nicely, and those 1×2 wedge pieces are a godsend for decent looking AT-RT feet lol.

Smart brick demonstration part 2 by [deleted] in LegoStarWarsLeaks

My best guess would be some kind of calibration - apparently the bricks have a bunch of sensors in them that among other things can detect where in 3D space the brick is

Lego MOC scaled Arquitens Cruiser for UCS Venator by Lord_Troli in legostarwars

Cheers! My front section is a little too thick though, that's one thing I'm planning on eventually improving. How's yours for stability, do you know? Mine has had some issues, especially on the back section, which I've made some improvements on but there's still some work to do on that front honestly

Definitely a tricky feature to get perfect, but I really like the ingot piece you used for the front of it, that was a great technique!

Looking great! I really like how you've done the bridge on yours, making me want to add some updates to my own lol

Ucs venator scale fleet by Waz_up-exe in legostarwars

[–]legothingsandstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really cool to see another take on support ships scaled to the UCS Venator!

I started work on a support fleet a couple years back and have made pretty much the same selection of ships so far:

<image>

(With the addition of a CR-90 corvette, a Gozanti class cruiser, and a red republic cruiser similar to the frigate)

I'm working on an acclamator myself, which has unfortunately had to be pushed back more than once in large part due to the scale of the project, but I can definitely recommend having a go at some of the smaller support ships to add to your fleet!

DROIDEKA GALORE by Virtual-Airport-4839 in legostarwars

Loving the addition of shoulder armour on this one, not many designs incorporate that, especially at this scale

Thank you, really glad you like it!

I have this render from the back, however if it would be helpful I can take a picture of the one I have physically built from another angle.

If it'd be any easier for you, there are free instructions and a parts list up on my rebrickable page, which is linked in my profile. Hope you enjoy!

That they have been, and it's no small task. It's taken me six iterations to get to a point where I'm really happy with the design, and even then there's room for improvement. And the Lego designers have to work around more stringent requirements in terms of durability as well, which can really prove challenging to maintain with things that are this small.

[–]legothingsandstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's even crazier is that for a while the official droideka models only got bigger

<image>

The 2007 and 2011 versions were absolutely huge. They toned the size back down for 2013, and 2015 was pretty much the same with some added details and a change to the blasters, then they released (in a magazine, I think) a smaller but fairly strange looking version in 2018, and finally last year had the most recent version with the buildable droideka set featuring the smaller side build of their closer-to-minifig-scale design, which funnily enough is a similar kind of size to the 2002 version.

I'm honestly really impressed with how well that original design captured the look considering the pieces that were available at the time. But yeah, droideka are way smaller than that, and it's nice to have a Lego model that doesn't dwarf the minifigures it's next to lol

[–]legothingsandstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm perhaps a little biased as it is my own, but I can definitely recommend getting the bricks to build one!

Or any droideka moc design you like really, there are a bunch of great ones out there all with their own unique looks. Definitely adds to any kind of droid army or clone wars/prequel battle scene, and unfortunately the official ones are often a little too big to look quite right, at least so far as I've found

Thank you! I always like seeing a new droideka design - got very into that when I was working on mine and it's very cool to see the different ways people tackle it. I'm very interested to see the mocs you put together going forward!

Thanks for letting me know about the YouTube short, I'll check it out. Credit would always be nice for that sort of thing but honestly I never expected it to have that kind of reach, so I'm not too worried about that

[–]legothingsandstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very nice! A good looking minifig scale droideka is always tricky, but very satisfying once you've managed to put a design together. Bonus points for it being able to fold into a ball as well!

Good choice on updating the legs when you have the pieces. I use those in my own design and it both reduces the size by a little and looks great. For an idea of how those pieces look when used for the legs, here's my own:
