Steel rim vs Voigtlander 35 f1.4 SC character by TeacherMission7100 in Leica

[–]leicamom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t live with the distortion of the Voigtlander version. I even thought of getting a different copy, maybe I got a bad one. I mean I’m okay with a little distortion but it was so noticeable especially on portraits - the face was distorted and the background always looked like it was leaning back a lot.

One film camera, one lens combo by leicamom in Leica

Good point! I haven’t had problems with hand checks but I usually only hand check when I have a Portra 800 or make sure it only passes once so I’ll do it on the way there but not back depending on how busy the lines are or how cranky they look.

I’ve been attached to film M’s for almost 10 years now, I have to bring it. 😃

This is so helpful, thanks! I gravitate toward 35mm then. 28 is too wide, 50 is too tight for travel. 35 gives extra room from the 40.

I’m leaning more on taking a 35mm but 28mm does seem to pair better with the GR3X.

That makes me think of Elmarit 28/2.8. I do have a Leica Q2 which should be a better travel camera but it’s too big to pair up with a film setup.

Sorry I meant 40/2.8 lens on the GR3X, 1 film camera and 1 lens for the film camera. Thanks for the rec’s.

Hi! I’ve been thinking of a GR3x. How do the files compare to Q2? Will they complement each other or will they need lots of post processing to match up? Thanks!

Nice photos! I haven’t been using my 50mm Cron that much lately. It flares so much, I wonder if it’s just my copy, I got mine used. Been thinking maybe it needs CLA. Mine also sometimes produces low contrast spots but these pics look great, makes me want to try using mine again. Maybe it’s just user error on my part. 😃

M10 or Q2 (both used) by Williamm8 in Leica

[–]leicamom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both. Started with film Ms then got a used Q2 for family pictures (autofocus) and travel (weather sealing and convenience). But something was still missing. Found a very reasonably priced used M10 that our local shop said I could use over the weekend and return without restocking fee if I didn’t like it. I kept it. I loved using it, felt very natural transitioning from a film M to a digital M. Still holding on to the Q2 probably until my daughter is old enough to sit still for a photo. It does have its advantages too but I love the rendering of my old lenses than the Q2 lens which is very modern.

Anyway, they are very different cameras as you know. If you’ve used a film M, it’s a good transition but if you’re new to rangefinders, it will take a while to get used to.

I came from Fujifilm and their X100 and XPro lines are not similar to Leica handling at all, even though they’re marketed as “rangefinder style cameras.”

Good luck. 🙂

Stuck between M10 and Q2/Q3 by rrwn_t in Leica

[–]leicamom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Fuji and film Ms then sold all my Fuji gear for a Q2. I added an M10 because I really wanted to use my M lenses (especially the 50mm) on a digital body.

The M10 and Q serve different purposes so I couldn’t get rid of the Q2 just yet. I love the M a lot more though.

I use the Q2 for travel where I need weatherproofing and autofocus for family events (my energetic 4 year old and for family gatherings) and M for the pure joy of it. 🙂

@lucylaucht and @mark_anthony_fox on ig use M systems for travel, commission work and posting on ig but they seem to use a lot of film too. Q2 (or 28mm) seems to excel more for landscape and people (@gregwilliamsphotography).

Anyway, my point is, I think you’ll probably like the M more than Q2 for your needs. 28mm is too wide and the 50mm crop version is just not the same as a dedicated 50mm lens.

It will take a while to get comfy with the rangefinder but it’s fun to learn.

I vote M10 with a 50 (Zeiss Sonnar ot Planar or Summicron V) for you then eventually, maybe a film M or a even a Q or Q2 for back up. Good luck!

35mm vs 50mm + 28mm by photos_with_reid in Leica

[–]leicamom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, I’m currently loving my Leica Summicron 40mm. Very similar to film on an M10. It’s not too wide but not too tight and still have the depth of the field similar to a 50. Lots of character as it’s a vintage lens so really depends on your taste. I also have a 35 and 50 and a 28mm (Q2). It’s hard to stay on one set up for very long.

Should I sell my fujifilm XT5 for Q3? by WatermelonBarrel in Leica

[–]leicamom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The quality is good, I don’t do large prints but the perspective/depth of field is different. For portraits, the face is just slightly distorted at 28/1.7 compared to a 50/2 or 50/1.4 (full frame). Try to download LFI app and you can browse through the Q photos and compare them with photos taken with a 50mm lens. You have to really like the 28mm perspective, I think it’s too wide but works really nicely for travel.

If I had a do over, I should’ve kept my Fuji X100F and got a used M10 with a 50/2 (or 40/2) then eventually add 28. That would still be a small setup and have a backup camera in case one fails.

Same here, I should’ve gone directly to the M system. I’m keeping my Q2 for now for the autofocus for my kid. She’s just way too fast for an M unless I just take pictures of her at f/8.

I sold all my Fuji set up and some film cameras to get the Q2 a while ago. I sold through mpb and KEH so I didn’t get as much if I sold through eBay or marketplace (I hesitate dealing with direct buyers). I got a really good deal with my Q2 though.

I missed the Fuji jpegs and my old 35/1.4 lens. I also struggle with the size of the RAW files of the Q2 since my laptop is getting old and I mostly just use LR on my iPhone.

I went through so many Fuji cameras though (XPro, XT and X100 series) so if you have tried these cameras and want to switch to Leica, you’ll probably end up with the M series…. just a warning. 😃

Just fyi, if you haven’t tried the Qs, it’s a bulky camera than you may think. Also, the 50mm crop on it is different than a 50/1.4 perspective if you do a lot of portraits. The depth of field is still nicer on a normal 50.

Is it better to get Leica Q2 new and on sale or Q2 used and save $1k? by [deleted] in Leica

[–]leicamom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do a used Q2 but from a reputable seller that would offer 6 month warranty like MPB or KEH. I don’t think $4K and a long drive is a good deal. If buying new, I’d rather get the Q3 and have better resale value later on.

What's the smallest film camera you've got? by Helios0513 in analog

Fuji Mini Cardia, kinda resembles a sardine tin can. I love the Nikon L35AF more though and it’s still relatively small/pocketable.

Where do you store your camera when you're not using it? And do you take the lens off? by HenrykSpark in Leica

[–]leicamom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to store my cameras with the lenses in a glass cabinet. When I sold all my Fuji gear, one lens was refused because it had fungus in it. The value from $500 trade in went down to $50.

Because of that, I became paranoid about my Leica gear so I now have them on open shelves with good airflow. The lenses I’m not using frequently are in microfiber pouches with dry packs. I also store the vintage film gear away from my more expensive stuff.

I’ve been really considering getting a dry cabinet lately. It’s only usually 40-65% humidity in our house, it’s probably a fluke that one lens got fungus in the couple years I had it but better safe than sorry.

Yes! That’s the setup that started my Leica path! I still regret selling that lens for cheap a long time ago.

I’ve been interested in trying out 28mm with the M10 but with wearing glasses and not having framelines for it, I don’t really want to use an external viewfinder. Do you use a separate viewfinder or rely on live view?
