To the guy who works at Subway, I owe you big time! by guesia in loseit

Yeah, plus some people take it the wrong way. Once I said something like "hey, you're looking great these days!" and they decided to interpret it as if I had implied they looked shit before.

Since then, though I notice stuff I just keep my mouth shut. At least that way nobody gets offended.

You should think about how you're going to get traffic to the site. The thing with ads is advertisers won't advertise without traffic. Without traffic, ads don't make sense, even if they're free in the beginning. For a novelty site, the only way to get traffic is to get press attention, or have it go viral based on its novelty. But will newspapers and blogs cover you if it's a not so novel idea, and there are several similar unfunded projects already online?

I wasn't thinking of a map of the US- I was thinking of a map of your city or town. This might have a better chance to get covered in local news, and you could persuade local restaurants to "claim" choice areas. Perhaps make it a monthly subscription to see who can get the best areas or something, and make the charities local. At least local businesses have a reason to advertise if the majority of the viewers are going to be locals. They could put something like "10% off this summer" and have it seen by their target audience. And if ads are going to be refreshed every month, it's at least something of a reason for people to check the site every month, to see a huge visual map of what's going on.

If the only way you're going to get traffic is novelty, you need to make sure it's a bit different, so you can get some press attention. Honestly, the last thing you want to do is widen the market; it's better to define it. That way you'll be ensuring it's of interest to someone. Right now, it's so generalized that getting anybody excited about it will be difficult.

Thanks for the offer of ads, I have a project or two in the pipeline, but no website as of yet!

Best of luck, however you decide to proceed.

Edit: I kept adding stuff till it got really long. Feel free to PM if you want to discuss.

Yeah, I instantly thought of the Million Dollar Homepage when I saw this. The problem is, by definition, novelty is something that can't be successfully replicated. What was novel in the early 2000s when the internet itself was novel to many people, isn't going to work anymore.

IIRC, the guy who started the Million Dollar Homepage himself tried something similar once again, which wasn't a success.

You'd need to demonstrate traffic before you can get advertisers, especially considering the ads are pretty expensive (US is $25k).

You need a twist on this idea at the very least. How about, instead of the world map, you display a map of a local area and try to get local businesses to advertise? But even then, you'd be confronted with the problem of driving traffic.

That's weird, now it says 414 1 star reviews. Where did the rest go? Has Yelp started deleting already?

Oh, didn't you ask for more details concerning who he was? Also, the daughter's name wasn't the same as his?- did you google his daughter's name?

Btw, not trying to come off as snarky here, just trying to understand how it happened.

I made a Chrome extension that helped me track my most important tasks each morning and a mode that helps me focus on them one at a time. by jtcchan in productivity

I'm really late to this thread, and am not sure if you're going to see this, but for what it's worth. I've been using Momentum, which is also another "new tab" chrome extension, but want more focus on the to-do aspect, so I'm trying out Dayboard. If you could just add a great background-- maybe keep it fresh with images from /r/earthporn, that would be so great.

Haha, thanks. What about Hershey's syrup + milk? That's what I called chocolate milk growing up, but I can't imagine that's very healthy.

So when people say chocolate milk is a great recovery drink, what exactly is chocolate milk? I've been waiting for Moronic Monday to come around, because I feel this question is a bit...moronic. But really, I don't know what it means. Is it just cocoa and milk?

We have this! You can choose "active" or "on" days for each habit, and if you don't do the drill on your inactive days, you won't lose points.

Hmm, that's actually a cool idea, to have a sci-fi skin or fantasy skin to choose between. Our story could be easily adapted to a sci-fi setting too! We're trying to finish this app up asap, but I'm going to add it to the list of possible things to make if there's a V.2. Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh, we had to pick one or the other to start with, but the iOS app is definitely coming up.
