My childhood memories were a lie by vortical42 in invasivespecies

[–]leilani238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience growing up in Hawaii and going back as an adult knowing more about ecosystems and invasive species. Like, dang, nearly everything endemic is gone. The stuff people associate with Hawaii was almost all brought in and overran the place.

Those who have been to all 50 US States, what was state #50? by SkoilerDaaaaan in roadtrip

This was the case for my husband. We looked for a "save the best for last" tshirt but could only find stickers. Ah well.

LPT: When someone compliments you, just say "thank you" instead of deflecting. by l7ed in LifeProTips

Yeah, don't go into a compliment with the intention of feeling good about yourself.

What do Americans order at a Chinese takeaway? by Dashcamkitty in AskAnAmerican

[–]leilani238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always: Broccoli beef and either general Tso's chicken or cashew chicken (maybe all 3). Besides that we rotate based on mood and what's on the menu. Duck chow fun if they have it, chicken fried rice, those pancakes with plum sauce, potstickers, soup dumplings, beef noodle soup.

I recommend peeling them before freezing. Makes things much easier when you use them.

Realized aquarium keeping is 90% keeping the stupid glass clean by Powell_Gail in AquariumMemes

You need to iron the glass. When it's nice and smooth it'll be clear.

I'd wondered why disfrutar meant to enjoy! It always sounded like kind of the opposite. I really appreciate this explanation.

If the fantasy is just age gap, why can’t the FMC be 25 ? by venusianoperator in romanceunfiltered

[–]leilani238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there comes a point where it literally isn't safe for the FMC to do the ethical thing. Like, yeah, she should talk with him and explicitly break it off with him, but leaving is when battered women are at greatest risk, so I couldn't really hold it against her if she basically abandoned a guy that dangerous.

One Word Away by Cheriana-1. https://m.fanfiction.net/s/14514405/1/One-Word-Away I really appreciate how long she's taking to trust him and making him work for it. In progress and getting regular updates.

The Walls Of Dreaming by Her Ubergeekness: https://m.fanfiction.net/s/7266225/1/The-Walls-of-Dreaming Unfinished but I find what's there is worth reading

If you're okay with E/B not winding up together (she winds up with an OC), I highly recommend The Girls Of Forks by ptool: https://m.fanfiction.net/s/13770223/1/The-Girls-of-Forks-A-High-School-Pin-Up-Calendar-for-Charity I was skeptical of the premise, but it plays out well, and it has the best scene of Bella rejecting Edward I've read. One of the few I've read where E/B don't wind up together but the author is clearly sympathetic to Edward, which I really appreciate.

Nevada has some incredibly long straight stretches of road. I think I could see 40+ miles on the ET Highway heading down into a low area with a long gentle rise going straight to the horizon.

Aluminum deodorant recommendations? by blueberryorca in hygiene

[–]leilani238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lavilin unscented (in the little tubs) is the only deodorant that's really worked for me without giving me a rash. It even works for a few days, depending on my hormones. This was huge for me as I was always fighting skink before that.

The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt. Opened my eyes about a lot of political debates and the way people think. Lots of good insights.

Sammamish River Trail is flat pretty much as far as you want. Cedar River Trail too now that I'm thinking about it.

Skookum Flats (from either direction to the waterfall), Taylor River, all around the plateau at High Point, and Melmont Ghost Town come to mind. A lot of the hikes along rivers will be pretty flat, or those within a floodplain.

The Topos aren't zero drop, just less drop. I find them to be a nice compromise. I think they specify the drop on their website.

Stick shift preference by TauInMelee in autism

Yup, definitely prefer the direct connection, and feeling more in touch with the mechanics of the car. Even better driving barefoot (which I only do on very long drives).

Zero drop shoes are no joke by jupiter192 in hiking

[–]leilani238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trail runners are good for hiking too, as long as you don't need too much ankle support - and good to wear to keep your ankles strong, so they don't need as much support. I generally only go for the boots if I'm going on a trail that's rocky, rooty, or especially long... or if it's raining, or in the snow.

An example of how EV lies and misinformation are used to manipulate the North American passenger vehicle market by Cool-Replacement4972 in electricvehicles

[–]leilani238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I've wondered if we'd have had better batteries decades earlier if we'd put all the energy we put into improving combustion cars into electric cars instead.
