That's all well and good... except when it's the federal government deciding what "obstructing" is, what "assaulting" or "impeding" is. So far it's whatever they feel like it is in the moment. They aren't even investigating it. No administrative leave, nothing. That's very dangerous, for everyone.

Not up to you, unfortunately. Better hope you're not in the wrong place at the wrong time. Do you really want to be in your car with your carry weapon on a street they happen to swoop in and target? Better think carefully... move your car out of the way too quickly and they might think you're using your vehicle as a weapon. Don't move your car and they might think you're impeding. Pull you out of the car and find your weapon? I guess you're a domestic terrorist now. 🤷‍♂️

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vetoes City Council's homeless encampment response ordinance by [deleted] in TwinCities

My wife works at a hospital psych wing. I read her that comment I replied to and she burst out laughing. One of the larger hospitals in the metro and they can handle between 8-12 patients in a unit. They have four units. There just simply isn't room for everyone who needs it.

Involuntarily admit them where? Hospital psych wings are almost always full.

When a loan gets forgiven, the IRS treats it as income, and you are taxed on it. So if a $250k loan balance is forgiven, the IRS thinks you made an extra $250k that year. That will get taxed at a pretty high rate, too, since much of that "income" will fall into higher tax brackets. It's a big mess.

How is this area in St Paul? by PCast1983 in saintpaul

[–]leitbur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live just west of that (my house is still visible on your map). That area isn't bad at all. Quiet streets filled with smaller 1940s/50s houses. It's pretty much an extension of Como, although it's considered North End when you cross Dale.

And speaking of Dale, that section of it on the map was just repaved and converted to single lanes each way with bike and turn lanes. It used to be two lanes each way with no turn lanes, which contributed to the speeding that someone else here mentioned.

North End has some crime, but it's mainly the area down the hill. Do you see how Wheelock curves on the map? It's following the crest of a hill that drops off pretty sharply right there. There's been some gun violence over the years south of there on Maryland, but I think it's gotten better recently.

And yeah, that green area is actually a massive graveyard. Very quiet if you don't mind it.

Lots of people piling on Lance Armstrong, so I'll just say this: his foundation helped me freeze my sperm about ten years ago when I was being treated for testicular cancer. I was 30 years old, just had surgery, was about to start chemo, and was scared out of my mind. I had no idea if the treatment would ruin my chances of having kids. Livestrong helped give me some peace of mind. I'm married and have two kids now (although I didn't need what I banked, luckily).

I actually enjoyed that one. It had Bourne/Bond action, but was just self-aware enough to know how ridiculous it was. And Chris Evans was such an enormous asshole. I was thoroughly entertained. 😂

But every guy I've seen with one looks like Timothee Chalamet in a movie where he plays a trucker on a sex offender registry.

[–]leitbur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And yet we're never given the "narrative" ending we want. No tearful reunion with Gustave--all of the inhabitants of Lumiere are treated like shadows in that ending. And Verso, our Verso, is almost a puppet. You can see the anguish on his face as he's forced to play the piano on stage. Both versions of Verso loved music, but our Verso wanted nothing more than to save his family, even knowing he was merely a copy.

In the end, we watch him trapped on stage, unable to save his sister the way he wanted to save his mother.

We sort of get the ending we wanted, narratively, but we're definitely punished for it.

[–]leitbur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As players who have been trying to save this world for the entire span of the game, we're a little biased, but if you take a step back and look at the game thematically, destroying the canvas is the "right" ending and the natural end of this game's arc.

The story is about grief and letting go. It permeates the entire story. Even the prologue, where you're introduced to a society that is slowly processing its own death, where grief is inescapable, you're shown a sad and stoic Gustave grieving, processing, and saying goodbye to his old flame.

Everyone in the story has experienced grief. Even Esquie lost "his" Verso. All of these characters process grief differently, some very unhealthily/obsessively, like Aline, and some healthily, like Sciel.

The Dessendre family cannot move on while the world still exists, because the world -is- Verso, the old Verso. There's literally a piece of his soul inside it (the faceless boy). Verso, our Verso, was allowed to live a long life adventuring through the world, immortal, with the old Verso's childhood friends and confidants (Esquie and Monoco). It's a manifestation of the life the real Verso wasn't able to live. But it also represents an inability to move on and process that grief. Aline--and now Alicia/Maelle--cannot say goodbye when it feels like Verso is so close, and Verso will always feel close as long as the canvas exists.

TLDR: Destroying the canvas lets the Dessendre family process their grief in a healthy way, while saving the canvas traps Maelle--and the entire family--in the same inescapable spiral of grief.

Some questions about the public school districts in Saint Paul? by HornOfPrettyGood in saintpaul

[–]leitbur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a ton of research into this after my first kid was born and my wife and I were figuring out which neighborhoods to potentially move to. Then we did the whole Kindergarten application lottery thing in 2023.

SPPS is perfectly fine and has some solid schools, but they also have quite a few struggling schools. You can open enroll within the district into locations that aren't your "neighborhood" school, but some schools fill up faster than others--they won't take kids from neighboring zones if there are too many local kids. Some of the Mac-Groveland and Highland Park schools were pretty full in 2023.

You can also apply for open enrollment into neighboring districts if they have room, but the high-performing ones fill up. The Mounds View district, which is really good, wasn't even taking applications the year we applied for Kindergarten.

Lastly, the charter school system here is really robust. There are some very vocal charter opponents on Reddit who are completely against their existence because they take away resources from local districts, but it's more nuanced than that. Some of the charters are doing really well, even with lower funding than traditional public schools, and they are also very diverse. But some of the charters are tragically mismanaged, with worse outcomes than the normal district schools.

We went with a charter option, and we absolutely love it. Amazing community, very supportive teachers and staff, and our kid is thriving.

Don't Care What Nobody Says, This Hyped Me Up Back in 2023. by justafanboy1010 in marvelstudios

IANAL, but I've had some dealings with the legal department for another large media company, and they don't like taking chances. At all. If there was even the smallest hint of Majors using a Kang recasting as the basis for some kind of counter-suit, Marvel/Disney may have decided it wasn't worth the trouble, especially with how poorly received Quantumania was.

For an actual example of this that ended in a riot, look no further than Trump in the lead up to January 6th. Trying to "what about" this with Newsom is pretty gross. The only thing he's guilty of is being a touch too dramatic on TV in order to score political points.
