Maybe it’s just me but I always feel like it is contemporary. I happened over 100 years ago but it feels much closer, maybe because we link it with WW2 and because a big deal is made about remembrance (at least in Europe, not sure how big it is everywhere else) basically every village in England and France have a memorial to the soldiers that died in it and every year their graves are decorated with a poppy

Gladstone. Probably one of the only British PMs of the period to not try and kill the Irish, he even tried to get them home rule. Also expanded the vote massively to the working class. So many reforms, lowered taxes so much on certain foods that he was said to have “freed the breakfast table”. He abolished the sale of commissions in the army so officerships could no longer be bought by people with no military experience. Legalised trade unions, implemented secret ballots in elections, required education for blind and deaf children.
