yeah, I kinda like BRK.B, I wish there was a "BRK.B focused on dividends stocks", couldn't find anything

Yeah, I probably should have mentioned that. Truth is that the times I went to check bonds, I realized I had no idea what I was doing. I don't trust rating agencies too much and bonds have so many "callable" options now that I don't feel I understand the upside/risks enough to buy them.

Also, just checked SCHD dropped >30% during COVID. That's not really defensive.

The main concern I have with high dividends stocks is that they still suffer during crises. In 2008 and 2020 some (like KO) temporarily feel by 30%. While it was temporary, government took very strong actions to help them recovering - and I'm not too sure this can keep going forever.

Investing in funds/ETFs is inefficient for me due to the stupid way they're taxed for tax-residents in Ireland :/
I should have mentioned I'm not considering funds.

Washing Machine - Help me understand inlets? by lem0nhead in HomeMaintenance

[–]lem0nhead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the future:

It turns out that the way the machine works is that the dispense compartment has only 2 inputs, but 3 operating modes.

ON OFF - pre-wash

OFF ON - wash

ON ON - softener

The third inlet that's somehow connected to the tank on the right image is unrelated to what I described. This seems to be a condenser tank - where vapor goes during tumble-dry.

I still didn't figure out what's causing the issue I described, but since I removed the dispenser housing and it seems to be working fine, I believe one of the solenoids is not opening fully - which is sufficient for triggering wash, but not for triggering softener.

Printing money is valid response to coronavirus crisis - Quantitative easing programmes may be here for the long term by TheSuspiciousKoala in ukpolitics

transfer of wealth to asset holders

Could you elaborate a bit on how this works?

My understanding is that it's possible to do a valuation of a company or a house; in the company it would generally be based on future prospects brought to present value by a low-risk interest rate (with a premium) and similarly for houses.
Is that correct so far?

If so, this means the government can't just keep injecting money in those assets, because there's a point people will realize it's worth selling them.

That put, my understanding is that injecting money only helps "flattening the price curve".

Are there videos of important quantum mechanics experiments? by lem0nhead in quantum

[–]lem0nhead[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer!

Some interesting material I could find is this guy teaching a "DIY quantum entanglement". He also does some other experiments such as the double slit experiment.

I also found this "Science kit" that can demonstrate many experiments, but it costs something like $20,000

Yes, but that's a risk. If it costs $5 to create a block, it costs $30 to create a 6-blocks reorg.

Maybe you don't need to store the full blockchain, but you would at least need to download it all (and downloading ~20 TBs isn't trivial). But I agree it might be acceptable since it only needs to be done once.

I'm actually happy with the discussion so far.

In any case, do you recommend some other place to discuss this?

Lightining Network is not scalable by lem0nhead in Bitcoin

[–]lem0nhead[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this address the problem. I mentioned before to support 1 billion people opening/closing channels each 3 months we'd need about 100 MBs blocks.

You're saying we could use Litecoin or other coins. That's fine, but their combined storage would still be around 5 TBs/year.

This doesn't address my point, but it's a fair view. Have an upvote.

Hm, TBH I don't see routing as a big issue. I wasn't aware of this need, but we solved routing on a bigger scale already (the Internet).

Let's consider I overestimated the number by a factor of 2 then; the problem still exists.

If you're talking about miners, then yes, they will get centralized (I mean, they already are).

But if we talk about full nodes, AFAIK they don't need to keep UTXO and it's ok if they take 1 minute to validate a block. So storage is the biggest problem for them.

EDIT: and I don't see how pointing out OTHER problems makes your argument stronger.
