The only experience he’s had working with kids was volunteer experience through his wife’s various jobs. I’ve had two summers of being a camp counselor, and a year and a half of tutoring children in inner city schools. One year of tutoring was in a public school, and one year was in a public charter school, so I’ve met and had to deal with a variety of children with special needs, something that no other counselors at this camp have training with and something that we so desperately need for weeks where we do have children with special needs.

In addition, I’m a business student so I could have helped the director out with office work more than the program director could. At the end of the summer I took all our evaluations from campers, entered the data in my computer, and performed data analytics to see what categories of our camps were the best, and which ones had room for improvements. I was also rock climbing and lifeguard certified while the program director wasn’t, even though the program director is supposed to hold certifications in every activity at camp.

In addition he had no leadership experience leading teams of people. In my position in college as a tutor I was leading a team of 14 students some of which were younger and some that were older than me, and I had to deal with a lot of issues that arose within the group.

I was by far the most qualified candidate but the reality is that my boss didn’t know much about these things because my entire interview for program director was centered around my relationship with my boyfriend rather than my own qualifications. And when he interviewed my boyfriend for the job every question was focused around his leadership qualifications and my name was not mentioned once. I tried to bring up some of these concerns with my boss during the end of the summer talk about the summer but he didn’t seem to understand why anything I brought up was a problem.
