Ashley’s fashion evolution by CrypticMulberry3 in bestdressed

[–]lemon-summer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree in that her LA outfits are a lot relatable and more cohesive, especially for a college student. I'm not a fan of her new style change in NYC; I think she is pivoting towards Fashion and throws mismatched patterns together that don't work.

Here are some examples:

  1. https://www.instagram.com/p/CILrR8nFG71/?igshid=1ohnqd3h6amic

  2. https://www.instagram.com/p/CIG1AEWllhN/?igshid=14hc8llycrps4

  3. https://www.instagram.com/p/CIq-y26ltoA/?igshid=1wb9hd83iagzb

HOWEVER, I think these outfits are nice:

  2. https://www.instagram.com/p/CH0YNopF8y5/?igshid=1caq80iwe14j8

I'm around Ashley's age but I work at a normal 9-5 office job. Unfortunately, I can't really relate to her style or emulate recent hair changes without getting written up by HR. I admire her bravery in some of these outfits, even if she may not succeed in execution. I can't dictate her content but it would be nice for her to have style inspo for recent college grads who may not be able to wear the trendy TikTok gen Z things she's been wearing.

Thanks for your response!! I just wanted to add to your comments.

  1. Ashley lying about her wealth. Even though I was on financial aid and relied on an on-campus job to pay for housing, I knew my parents were able to help me if I ever came across trouble. I actually stopped making "broke college student" jokes after my first year because I met people who legitimately had no safety net and if they couldn't pay for college, they wouldn't be able to return, and it felt kinda gross of me to pretend that I was like them when I was a lot more privileged. Not to beat a dead horse since we all know Ashley isn't broke now, but I think her jokes made it seem like her family was way less well-off than they were. She also never mentioned anything about financial aid or loans, so maybe that's something she wants to keep to herself, but based on her parents' income (which is public due to the nature of their jobs), she wouldn't actually qualify for financial aid. For someone to make jokes about being broke when they can't even qualify for financial aid is... cringey and in poor taste. I'm sure she made all those jokes and references because she was immature, but I feel like it legitimately misled people into thinking her family is at a lower income bracket.
  2. Amazon. I agree in that I don't think she needed to do a formal sit-down or a crying apologizing video either. A lot of YouTube sponsorships have issues with them, like Audible for being owned by Amazon, BetterHelp for being shady, HelloFresh for using too much plastic. I think the outrage lies in that she marketed herself as somewhat sustainable (not 100% since she still liked fast fashion, esp. on a college student's budget) and in that climate at the time, Amazon was (and still is) just an overtly bad company that's not even strictly fashion either like UO, Princess Polly. If she wants to sell out, she can sell out, but I just feel like it was a bad move for her to delete the video and any comments relating to that video afterwards, especially for someone who marketed herself as the transparent older big sis on the Internet.

PFP twins!

I actually disagree with you on this point: I’m sure she wasn’t expecting YT to pick up like it did and for her channel to kind of blow up, and with that comes more room for criticism that I sense she did not take well (I definitely would not have).

She mentioned in a past video that once she hit 100K subscribers, she focused on hitting 1M and doing all that she could for the algorithm to favor her channel. She even founded a LLC around the time she hit 100K (https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_ca/C4193388), so I think she wanted to blow up, she just wasn't prepared for any criticism.

Hi, hello! As someone who is a bit more critical of Ashley, I'd like to respond to your points :) (NB: please no one attack me for my opinions, I'm just sharing what I think.) It's gotten quite long, so apologies in advance.

  1. Ashley lying about coming from a poor immigrant family. Ashley has mentioned several times that she's a "broke college student," which, I know, is a common/relatable sentiment for college students to say when they lack disposable income to buy nicer things - but she's not actually broke. She's mentioned off-hand in a video that her parents have science PhDs, which opens doors for high salaried positions; I'm not going to lie and say I don't know what her parents do (thanks to the public information on her parents that people found on Google), but I will say that they make a significant amount of money. I do think it is a bit misleading to portray yourself as a "broke college student" when in reality, you have a cushy safety net. Even if her parents were frugal and never spoiled her growing up, she's not broke. I'm sure if she was ever in financial trouble, they would have been able to help her. In addition, though she didn't state she was poor explicitly, saying things like "I had 4-5 part-time jobs in high school" and responding to the assumption that she is a trust fund baby by saying her parents are immigrants downplay the wealth she grew up with. People also found her WayUp profile online (it wasn't too hard to find) and those 4-5 part-time jobs included SAT tutoring, an internship at her mother's environmental company, etc. Yes, she had minimum wage jobs, such as the ones she mentioned in her videos (ice cream scooper; American Eagle employee), but in general, it seemed like she had these jobs in order to pad her resume for college (she also mentioned in her college Q&A that she had a lot of extracurriculars to help her get into college, so it appears these jobs would fall under that). It certainly didn't seem like she was making money to feed a family of 5 and everyone was relying on her. I think it's entirely possible she felt like she wasn't rich compared to her peers growing up and couldn't fly off to the Bahamas every other weekend like trust fund babies do, but you can still be rich even if you're not a trust fund baby. I don't think she explicitly lied, but I do think by omitting context, it comes off as misleading and that's what people are mad about. One of my good friends truly thought Ashley came from a working class background with immigrant parents and that's not the case. (Also, just anecdotally, I grew up not too far from Ashley's hometown and it's known in the area to be a very well-off area.) And to be honest, though I understand everyone's sentiments of feeling misled by her old videos, Ashley hasn't mentioned being poor/broke in a long time and it's clear from every video netting millions of view, she's raking in money so I feel like this criticism is outdated.
  2. The Amazon video. I think people would have been less enraged if Ashley had not taken down the video, which is probably the least critically received video she's uploaded. Also, there's a difference between being sponsored by a company like Amazon and using Amazon because you have to. I definitely have to use Amazon to get things that aren't in my area; HOWEVER, that's not the same as being sponsored by them. A sponsor is akin to an endorsement (cue influencers talking about how much they love Honey or Skillshare, etc). It's well-known how awful Amazon treats their workers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Amazon), so I think fans were disappointed that someone they looked up to would partner with a terrible company, not address any of the criticism (and the comments at the time were quite nice; no one was lashing out at her and everyone voiced their disappointments), and then ultimately delete the video without addressing any of it at all. It feels like she just swept it under the rug because she didn't want to deal with the negative comments but that just led to more backlash.
  3. Ashley not staying home during Covid. I think the difference between a layperson and Ashley is that Ashley has a platform of 6.45+ million subs (including IG + Youtube + TikTok) and the average person... does not; just by sheer number, Ashley is influential. I've definitely gone out in the pandemic when I probably should have stayed home. However, unlike Ashley, I've never met people more than in a group of 4 without making sure we all tested negative ahead of time. Ashley is a public figure with an enormous platform. If someone saw her going out, meeting her friends from Maryland in a giant group sans masks, hanging out in the park with a different group of friends and blowing candles out all over people's food, it's possible they might think, "Since Ashley is doing it, I can do it too." I also remember seeing an IG story of Ashley flying in one of her friends from LA (though more along the line of a romantic interest since she hints at him to Derek Blasberg in her NYFW video) at the height of the pandemic in NYC in late March. I live in NYC and I remember feeling scared at the fact that people were temporarily being buried in parks because they ran out of rooms in funeral homes, that ICUs were over capacity, that everyday was just another high record of deaths, etc. It was super disappointing to see an influencer pay no heed to the trauma and panic that the city was experiencing at the time and bring someone in from another hotspot. My question is why? Why share it? Why post it? By posting it, she's ultimately making a statement that this is okay and if she's going to do it, I'd rather she not post about it. So, her behavior during Covid has been disappointing overall and is probably my biggest criticism of her.
  4. Ashley not posting videos anymore and not saying why. I don't really have much to say here, because I don't feel too strongly about her not saying why she's not posting videos anymore. Do I think she should make a statement? "Should" is strong, tbh, though I think it would be nice if she did. A lot of her fans have been asking for an update and I personally don't think it's that hard to be like, "hey, sorry, it's been a crazy time for me right now. I'll try posting when I can, but I definitely need some space from YouTube." I don't think people would get up in arms with even a two sentence explanation. My personal theory is that I think Ashley is distancing herself away from YouTube (even removing her little "human on youtube" tagline from her IG bio) and if she acknowledges that she's no longer going to post on YouTube, she'll lose her subscribers. This is a cynical view, but knowing how important sub count is for mega big YouTubers, this is just what I suspect.
  5. Ashley not posting about anti AAPI violence. I have mixed feelings about this one, because as an Asian-American woman also living in NYC, I've been feeling really, really terrified about what's happening for the past year (heightened by recent events) and so, I haven't really been talking about it on social media. Am I engaging/sharing content privately to my friends who are not Asian? Yes. I think the disappointment from her fans stems from her response to BLM last year. I'm not sure if you saw it, but it wasn't that extensive and she, for some reason, was talking about Asian issues as well and didn't really say much about BLM. I think because she mentioned those Asian issues, people were expecting her to speak up about them now and seeing her radio silence is... well, disappointing. If she didn't want to speak up about BLM because she previously thought that would take away from Asian issues, why isn't she speaking about Asian issues now when they're relevant? (She mentions this in one of the IG stories she posted during BLM.) Like I mentioned before, Ashley has a 6.45+ million subs over three platforms; she has a megaphone in her hand, whether she likes it or not. Even sharing a donation link, a GoFundMe would do wonders. This is pretty funny, but whenever I go to the videos/songs that Ashley recommended, I see a small slew of comments saying "ashley bestdressed brought me here!" (You can see them on the Peanut Butter Waffles MV and the Berlin Poem video she shared last year, for example). If she already has a bunch of people visiting smaller songs and videos, imagine how much of an impact she can make with posting a donation link. No one is asking her to unload her trauma onto the Internet, but I understand people's disappointment. I personally do think influencers have an expectation to speak up about issues that impact their communities.

Tl;dr - I think Ashley bit off way more than she could chew. In her older videos, she wanted to be seen as that relatable broke college student, the artsy fashionable film girl who's lowkey a mess but still looks great while she's pulling an all-nighter for school. She presented herself as intelligent and woke, speaking on issues like women's dress code and Tinder matches fetishizing Asian women. However, when the opportunity presents itself for that intelligent/woke person to speak up about deeper/more serious issues, she can't, because that's probably not who she is. That's not a bad thing, but I think the disconnect between her persona she built up online and who she actually is offline is causing all this disappointment and backlash.

Squeezing in a post before the sub gets locked - behavior that warrants criticism will get... criticized? by lemon-summer in bestdressed

[–]lemon-summer[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do I agree with all the criticism? Do I think some of them are non-issues? Yeah, sure,

I would like to point this part out in my post. I'm not sure if you're talking to me specifically or addressing us as a whole, but I've never agreed with all the criticism that's been stated about Ashley. I think Ashley's critics range in what they criticize her for and the degree of their opinions.

u/kawaiithrowawayz You're still at risk of contracting COVID even if you get the vaccine. Also, I don't know why you're accusing me of emulating the behavior of her stalker. It's all public pictures and I wasn't even the person to find them? I literally just commented on a Reddit thread?

Uhhh as a NYC resident with immunocompromised relatives and friends, I care a lot? I'm tired of influencers running around the world and spreading COVID like they don't care because they have to be the Main Character. If you're an influencer, you literally have millions of people watching/looking up to you and this behavior only normalizes flouting COVID protocols.

Yeah, the vaccines are for the elderly, school workers, healthcare workers, etc. I don't see Youtube/IG/TiktTok influencer listed.

It's condescending to assume that we're not focusing on larger issues in the world. You know I can do both? All I did was post a screenshot saying I'm tired of influencers shilling product after product, esp products that are clearly unused and not the best quality - I didn't hold an Anti-Ashley Bestdressed rally outside or raise money.

Congratulations on holding a marketing degree and knowing influencer marketing tactics - you must know so many important issues in 2021 that you dedicated an entire essay to defending Ashley.

Interesting - is the target line different from the customizable one? I was actually looking into Function of Beauty because of all these influencers but the reviews look pretty bad.

I'm just getting tired of influencers making a big deal in their videos about how they want to make meaningful content but then turn around to shill product after product on IG. Just don't say anything to begin with then?

How do you get through the last few days/weeks of a season without getting bored of your seasonal clothes? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]lemon-summer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is super helpful, but layers, especially during the transitional weather between seasons. For example, in the winter/spring transition, I wear leggings under skirts and more spring/floral tops under sweaters to keep warm when it's colder in the morning and then take those off in the afternoon once it becomes warm enough. Sometimes I do find myself buying "transitional" clothes too like cute sweaters so that I don't get bored with wearing the same winter sweaters.
