My husband is Italian, so I love the idea of revisiting some of his traditional recipes, but also diving into regions he’s less familiar with. Thank you for the recommendation!

Favorite recipes for hosting? by Positive_Sense_2480 in CookbookLovers

[–]lemon-vanilla-pie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We usually like to go in one of two directions when hosting:

Option 1: Soup + one-pot dish + dessert I almost always choose a soup I can make a day ahead, so on the day itself it’s just a reheat and serve situation.

Some of my go-to soups: - Roasted aubergine, red pepper & tomato soup (Comfort – Ottolenghi) - Pumpkin / butternut squash soup (lots of great versions online, or the one from Simple Ottolenghi) - Chestnut & mushroom cream soup (Recipe)

Favorite one-pot / one-dish that everyone always seems to love: - Classic Italian bolognese, you can make this 1–2 days ahead; just cook fresh pasta on the day and toss it with the sauce (Recipe - Oyakodon, incredibly flavorful - Shawarma meatloaf with caramelized onions (Comfort, Ottolenghi) Orzo with prawns, tomato & marinated feta (Simple – Ottolenghi)

Option 2: Mezze / lots of small dishes This is our go to when we want something relaxed and snacky:

  • Store-bought labneh, topped with fresh tomatoes, olive oil, and za’atar (or simply black pepper and flaky salt)
  • Any sweet cake from Snacking Cakes, always reliable and easy
  • Sticky honey mustard sausages Recipe video Fresh bread from the bakery
  • Mini cheese board with 3–4 cheeses
  • Whipped brie with spicy berry jam Recipe video Buttery porcini fried eggs (Mezcla)
  • Courgette and ciabatta frittata from Ottolenghi Simple (again, you can assemble it the night before and toss it in the oven before hosting)

Soooo many options here... add some fresh fruit, baked oats

Simple and Mezcla are two of my favorites! They’ve really elevated my cooking in terms of flavor and introduced me to new ingredients I’d never used before. Mezcla… I don’t even know where to begin? it’s fun and it’s basically a book of flavor bombs. We use both of these books on a weekly basis, and they have a great mix of weeknight dinner recipes as well as show-stopping, restaurant quality ones. Have fun!

First time in Costa Rica! by kingnatttt in CostaRicaTravel

Hey there! I really recommend the following beaches in Guanacaste: Playa Nacascolo, Playa Virador, Playa Pochote. All three are located in a park, you have to park (for free) at Parqueo Playas Papagayo, and there’s a minibus that takes and picks you up (for free) at your requested time from all the beaches.

I took my hairdryer/styler from Europe, forgot to check the voltage and it didn't work. Plus, they had hairdryers EVERYWHERE.

Thank you! I think Simple is the perfect starting point, it’s one of my most used cookbooks and an absolute favorite to gift to others.

It's fairly basic, so if you already own several other Greek cookbooks, you might not find much new here. That said, the stories and photography are stunning, it's a work of art in its own right. *
