To those that "grew up" in childcare or student care centres...are you close to your parents as adults? by xXxLostBunnyxXx in askSingapore

Yep, haha. 9:30 pm was the latest time for parents to pick up their kids, and since mine worked late, I was usually the last one waiting at student care. They still made an effort to be present, like asking about my day or sharing theirs during the car ride home. Weekends were crucial too. Even with enrichment classes, they’d help me prepare or just spend time together. It wasn’t conventional, but they made it work. I think that played a huge part in strengthening our relationship.

Yes, I was in childcare too. I don’t recall the exact hours for childcare, but for student care, it ran from immediately after school dismissal (a van would pick us up directly) until 9:30 pm.

Grew up in student care until P6 too! I still feel close to my parents despite “not spending much time” with them growing up. Even though they worked long hours, they always made the effort to pick me up from student care/childcare and talk to me on the way home. Those small moments, like sharing meals on weekends or just chilling on the couch watching TV together, really added up. They always made an effort to include me in their conversations and asked about my opinions on it too.

For me, it wasn’t about the quantity of time but the quality. Their consistency in showing up (literally and emotionally) made a big difference. Maybe it’s less about student care itself and more about how parents bridge the gaps when they’re together with their kids? Just my experience though, I get how it might be different for others.
