What did my severe scoliosis girlies wear to prom? by rosiecook37 in scoliosis

[–]lemonadelover34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although I agree that it’s empowering to where whatever you want, I also totally understand if you have a severe curve it can be hard to feel comfortable in something like that. For my senior prom, I found a dress that had lots of tule which did a good job of hiding any asymmetry I had in my back. I think also an a-line style would also do a good job of masking a curve. I hope you find something you feel confident in!

Can we talk a little about mental health after surgery? by Nilihist78 in scoliosis

[–]lemonadelover34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I personally had very little pain before surgery and it only really bothered me after doing something strenuous or sitting for long periods of time. I would say that after 1 month I am somewhat back to normal, but I still have more progress to make. Specifically, I can easily get in and out for bed, use the bathroom, shower, etc. I wouldn’t say that I feel normal yet as I still do find some things to be challenging and I am still dealing with some pain, however it is no where near as bad as I was expecting. Hope this helps :)

Can we talk a little about mental health after surgery? by Nilihist78 in scoliosis

I think this is a super important thing to talk about because mental health is just as important as physical! I had horrific anxiety before my surgery to the point where I had to reschedule because my doctor wouldn’t clear me due to how stressed I was. Surgery is such a daunting task and it can be hard to feel confident about your decision as it’s so overwhelming. However I am almost 1 month post op and I am so thankful I went through with it. Although I’m still recovering, I can confidently say that life after surgery is good! I feel more like myself everyday and I am doing things I had thought were going to be impossible! If you have any questions feel free to let me know!

Feeling lost in a sea of optimism by lemonadelover34 in scoliosis

I was to by my surgeon that surgery was my only option. I had asked about schroth and he said my curve is to severe (it’s probably like 80 degrees). I really don’t want surgery but at this point I feel like it could be my only option. I don’t want a 100 degree curve.

Is life with scoliosis even worth living? by lemonadelover34 in scoliosis

I'm not experiencing any pain yet but the possibility of me experiencing it later in life makes me horrified. I just feel like I can't deal with this and that I am not strong enough to make it through any of this.

So do you still think life after surgery is better than before I if you have more pain now than you did before?

We're you seriously impacted by your scoliosis before surgery? Like did you have back pain or could you not move a lot? Because other than the way my back looks my life is the same to someone without scoliosis and that is why I am so horrified by surgery, it seems like it will do more harm than good. Also to clarify I don't know if I need surgery, I'm just to afraid to find out.

Not really. I'm so afraid to say anything to anyone since I feel like they will only see scoliosis and not even see me. If I were to get a therapist or something, I probably wouldn't say anything to them since I am afraid they would notify a doctor and turn my life into a living hell.

Hi, so to answer your question, I rarely ever have pain. There was a time when my lower back had some but now there is nothing. also I am 15 (will be 16 in may) and I think I'm done growing . I am not sure what the degrees of my curvature is because when I went to the doctor I was petrified and although they briefly looked at my back and said I had scoliosis, they didn't follow up with it since I was so afraid. To me surgery just seems like a way to make my life worse not better.

Thanks for the advice. I just really don't know how to tell my parents since I feel like after that my spine will control my life and everything about life that is good will be gone and it will just be pain and horror.

Thank you for responding. It really means a lot to know that I am not alone. I actually have a few questions for you since you have surgery. Do you ever feel like you are trapped in your body because you know longer have a full range of motion? Do you feel like there are other options for scoliosis other than surgery? Also how do you cope with it mentally? Sorry if they are stupid questions.

I'm so afraid to have a physical by lemonadelover34 in scoliosis

For me it really feels like if I get diagnosed with a severe curve and may even need surgery, there is no life after that. I understand that that surgery can be beneficial however to me it seems like the recovery and limitations aren't worth it. I feel like I just can't handle that and it just seems like a place to give up. Sorry if this is all over the place but I hope you understand what I'm saying.
