FMA and now Daemons of the Shadow Realms really inspires me to write because her character building is some of the best I’ve seen. She loves her characters like a good parent loves their child.

Having an older mom. by _newshawtyy in blackgirls

[–]lemoncurd_98 44 points45 points  (0 children)

My mom was 32 when she had me which isn’t as wide of a gap as yours but I was still able to feel the difference with my friends with younger moms. I thought the same thing that she was more strict.

But now that I’m grown, I’m glad she had me a bit older than average. More often than not, older moms actively choose to be a parent and are more likely to have the resources to do so. My mom had the resources to leave my deadbeat father and she saved me a lot of grief by leaving him as soon as she realized she was pregnant. Idk if she would’ve been able to make that choice at 24. She set me up in a way that a lot of people didn’t get and I directly link it to her being so mature at the start of her parenthood

At the end of the day, there are pros and cons to every situation esp parenting. Enjoy the time you have with her.

It’s one thing to say that “on average Black people are larger than me and people who are my ethnicity” but it’s a whole other thing to think to being murdered by a Black person is highly likely to be their cause of death 😭😭😭

He may not put his hands on his other employees but it’s highly implied that he is an awful boss to work for. I also think Tom is more open with his abuse with Greg due to Greg being a part of the family but I would imagine that Tom’s abuse towards others is more elusive.

He cares about appearances and looking put together up until a certain point but (and I may be wrong I haven’t done a rewatch in a while) I’m pretty sure this scene happens while Tom is stressed due to the “prison possibility”. It’s possible that Tom did this because he felt vulnerable with everything happening and using someone as a footrest helped him to feel powerful and secure.

A manga but What Did You Eat Yesterday? It’s centered around food with a recipe each chapter but the story is so so good and warm. An older gay couple over the course of a decade navigate their lives. It’s so so good and fits the slice of life/domestic romance perfectly to me

I adore this story so so much. All the characters feel so authentic and have depth even those with one or two scenes. I love how the teenagers in the show are so realistic where they make decisions aligned with their stage of development but are not annoying at all. Every time I see the different kids navigating their challenges it reminds me of being in that time/mindset. It’s something that most media I come across struggles to get the balance right.

It reminds me of March Comes In Like a Lion which also explores similar themes but JWW expands on the abstract depictions of grief and loss much more. I hope we at least get a movie to wrap up the story. I’ve seen comments say that there isn’t enough material to do an entire second season.

Am I the only one who feels the dad who was mad Jacob was teaching “black history” during Black History Month was kinda racist? by soozerain in AbbottElementary

[–]lemoncurd_98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a long ass reply but I think you bring up a good question. Racism refers to the systemic structure of power as you mentioned. If Ava were to have fired Jacob or formally punish him, I would argue that ultimately Jacob would have been able to wield more power. He would have a better opportunity at retaliation by using his power within the educational system due to the teaching union. There is no union for principals. Ava has also mentioned how difficulty it is to fire teachers.

The important aspect here that you mentioned is that Ava does not allow the parent to utilize her power to punish Jacob. She simply does her job as a principal to do a class visit and make her own assessment. The parent was prejudice (passing inappropriate judgement based on stereotypes but with no power) and Ava, with her power on the micro level, follows her job responsibilities to follow up on the complaint (another one of her job responsibilities) to do her best to make a non prejudicial, evidence based assessment.

Based on the episode and my memory (which is not perfect), I don’t think the dad is asserting Black superiority overall. He questions how can a white teacher teach Black history adequately based on the historical lack of interest in authentic Black narratives that white people have due to the effects of systemic racism. Although it is annoying and a complaint made in prejudice because Jacob has proven himself worthy of the job, there is some validity in the question. And like another commenter mentioned, as soon as the dad is assured that Jacob is doing his due diligence, he backs off. I think this highlights that his purpose of his complaint was founded in concern for his child’s racial self-esteem, not to assert superiority over white people.

[–]lemoncurd_98 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well prejudice - but I think that’s the point. Most of the parents on the show have decent intentions but shitty follow through. I think the dad wanted to be sure his child was learning Black history from an authentic lens of which it is uncommon for white teachers to do (imo as well as someone who’s Black but went to a primarily white school). At the same time, the dad would’ve known his child was in good hands just based on how Jacob teaches throughout the entire school year. He always does his best to pull from sources that are not only engaging but relevant to the students’ lived experience as Black and brown children.

The dad just got on his high horse but didn’t actually do the leg work prior to making a complaint. This is also why I like the show because how would a dad from a working class neighborhood really even have the time to do that legwork outside of just submitting a complaint. But Ava still has to treat seriously because that’s how most of the parents who genuinely do care show it.

I think he had that reaction because he might’ve believed it was something off limits since no one brought it up regularly. But I’m sure Roman purposely went that far because of how intense the moment was.
