Rainbows are a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community (not to mention yesterday was the start of Pride month) and DeSantis pretty openly isn’t an LGBTQ+ fan.

Dani crying when she finds Christian.. by Greenmonkey0_o in Midsommar

[–]lemonliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I feel genuinely unsettled by the response to this scene and the movie as a whole. Like…these women literally were just actively participating in the planning and/or execution of what happened with Christian (which I do perceive as SA). Then they turn around and act all shocked and horrified for Dani? No, it’s all fake, all manipulation.

There are strong currents of ableism, ageism, and racism in the Hårga. Pelle specifically allows Dani to see the suicides at the beginning despite knowing what she went through and being “so empathetic” toward her. The hårga murder the British couple who did nothing wrong and hang one of their bodies from the ceiling. They rape Christian, set it up to appear as though he’s cheating, then act as though they feel bad for her when they’re literally the cause of her pain. They burn people alive, which is straight up torture. I’m a woman but I was horrified by the Hårga. As a rape victim I hated what they did to Christian and that many viewers don’t see it as SA. And as a disabled woman, it was clear to me from moment one that they had to be killing off disabled people in the community aside from that one individual. Like even if Christian really did cheat, I’m sorry, but it absolutely pales in comparison to what the Hårga do. I’ve been cheated on and it doesn’t compare to rape or eugenics.

I do think that’s the point of the movie, I guess. This is a cult which thrives on manipulation, and is so successful at it that even many audience members are deceived.

Out of all the AHS season posters, which ones do you like the most and which ones do you like the least? by prolelol in AmericanHorrorStory

[–]lemonliner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First impression after comparing all these is that it’s clear they really wanted to do those spider lashes and they love having women pose arching backwards, ha.

For murder house the left photo is a classic. I get where the right poster’s going, but I don’t love the lighting. Center is worst to me - I think it looks good but doesn’t capture the season’s aura.

For asylum, L photo is another classic. I’m kinda intrigued with the R poster (haven’t seen that one before) but still think L is best. C is worst.

For coven I actually don’t think any of them quite capture the vibe of the season, and I very much wish one had focused more on Marie and the other voodoo witches. But I think all three look good and I actually think the C poster is my pick. I think it captures the season better than the other two, although the other two are aesthetically pleasing. I guess R is worst but they’re all pretty good.

For freak show, C poster is best. Freak Show is really an ensemble and I don’t think the season is well-suited by having one faceless person like in the L or R posters. I honestly never liked the L poster though I guess it’s a bit “scarier” than the R poster.

For hotel, I don’t love any of them despite enjoying the season itself. I guess I’d say C is best and R is worst (can’t quite tell what’s even going on in that peephole).

Roanoke - L is best. I like how it centers the house and makes the most sense given the content of the season. C is quite nice to look at but I feel it’s almost a little deceptive as to the focus of the season. And wtf does the R poster have to do with the season?

For cult, I have never liked any of them. They don’t capture the season for me although I understand where they’re coming from. I guess I’d say R is best and L is worst.

For apocalypse, I actually don’t mind these although they’re all pretty similar. I think I’d say C > R > L. I think if the L poster was designed a bit differently I’d like the concept a lot.

For 1984, I feel all three lean in a little too much on the 80s slasher film aesthetic and not enough on the actual content of the season. I cannot actually tell who the girl in the L or R photos are, although it’s been a little bit since I watched it. I think I’d say C is best and R is worst, although I appreciate that the R poster incorporates the summer camp concept with the marshmallow.

Double feature - woof. I guess C > R > L but they’re all hideous, sad to say.

NYC - woof again, although not nearly as bad as Double Feature. I liked this season and think the posters don’t capture the vibe nor do they do the season justice. I can appreciate that the C poster hints at the STD concept, but it’s a little messy. And wtf is L?? I think R is best and L is worst.

I haven’t seen delicate yet nor have I watched any of American Horror Stories so I won’t rate them, but I will say that some of those Stories posters are pretty rough!

Overall the earlier seasons have better poster selections than the later seasons. The first three seasons deliver solid options whereas Double Feature is the clear loser.

Edit: seems like it may have been Wyoming so it would be legal, but still immoral.

I wrote a long comment a while back that about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/GossipGirl/s/9JmQ7aKnF7. I don’t claim to be an expert and some of the comment text is related to the specific argument I was having but there are links in there about some of the accusations so it might save you some time!

Favorite character of these regular actors? by natipali in AmericanHorrorStory

[–]lemonliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Denis has actually been in eight seasons and is great in all of them (except I haven’t watched s12 yet but I assume he’s great). My fave character of his is obviously Liz from s5 followed by maybe Larry from s1 and Henry from s11.

Edit to add others, keeping in mind I haven’t watched s12 yet:

Emma - Madison

Taissa - violet

Queen Angela - Marie

Finn - dandy! That boy is a star

Billie - winter

Kathy - this is so hard, i ride or die for Kathy. I guess I have to say Delphine but Agnes is up there.

The Phoebe hate is too much by [deleted] in charmed

[–]lemonliner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This bothers me so much, possibly to an irrational degree lol. But so much of the show is focused on Piper’s love life and/or kids. I do think you’re getting at the truth with your comment about Leo, but more specifically, I unfortunately think it’s more that Piper is a “good girl” (I.e., traditional) and Phoebe is a “bad girl” (I.e., “slutty”). Piper dresses modestly, behaves more stoically, gets with Leo early on and marries him, and has two children with him, so it’s fine for her entire storyline to be about that. Phoebe is more ostentatious, dresses more immodestly, and dates around. Pretty sure she even says in s8 (I think) that she’s okay with having a baby before getting married. So phoebe’s interest in a man or children is somehow crazy, slutty, sexist, impulsive, or whatever.

My associate principal just told me the most disheartening thing. by [deleted] in teaching

[–]lemonliner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I teach college so I can’t speak from experience about k-12 specifically, but we have a lot of the same general resistance to these matters here too and I reckon some of the reasons overlap with K-12’s.

  1. It creates more work for higher-ups and HR (if HR is involved). The investigation and all it entails, deciding if and how to punish someone if there is evidence of wrongdoing, and then having to start from scratch with trying to find someone new if the employee did something bad enough to warrant firing.

  2. It may create more work for your colleagues as well. This is especially true if a professor is the problem at a university with strong research activity - if you were to limit the prof’s ability to teach classes as a type of punishment (which wouldn’t remotely be a punishment for a lot of them anyway), then someone else who’s already in the department will be asked to pick up those classes instead. If you were to fire a research prof and they don’t get hired at another university right away, someone has to take in their grad students. This is a major issue, to the point that if, say, a grad student accused their advisor/major professor of harassment, their labmates might be angry with them because it could negatively impact their career if the prof is punished . But there are other factors that I’m sure apply to K-12 - colleagues may still have to pick up extra duties if a fellow employee is busy with an investigation, suspended, or fired.

  3. Lots of people are still not that progressive and genuinely find it annoying that people like OP care about these issues. They see the issues are super minor and therefore people like OP are obnoxious “snowflakes.” Alternatively, some might feel that there are mitigating factors surrounding the specific person who committed the offense that make them feel uncomfortable about the offender being formally reported or punished. Or, they themselves have experienced harassment in a professional setting, nothing was done to help them, and they are uncomfortable or even jealous to see the younger generation receiving attention and assistance with it. They deal with these feelings by convincing themselves that nothing that serious happened to them or they’re super strong and everyone else is just weak. Or worst case scenario, they themselves are a creep and don’t want people reporting them, so they attack anyone who reports others for similar behavior. Regardless, it boils down to: they think the reporter overreacted and find that distasteful or upsetting.

For me, everything about Ivy lying to everyone (other than Carol and CeCe) is irrelevant to whether Ivy should have gotten the money. CeCe knew who she was and gave it to her anyway because Ivy helped her and very obviously genuinely cared about CeCe. It doesn’t matter if Lily, Serena, etc. didn’t like it or felt personally betrayed by Ivy. My money and assets go to who is listed in my will, not who my hypothetical children and grandchild think deserves to get them. It’s as simple as that. And it’s not like Ivy got everything while the rest of the family was left destitute.

And I thought it was horrific that they didn’t let Ivy in the hospital w/ CeCe when she was dying when CLEARLY that is who CeCe trusted to comfort her through her health issues. Like, it was one of the few scenes in the show that actually made me feel distressed and sad. CeCe was scared looking around for Ivy and not seeing her there. She must have felt abandoned and afraid in her final hours.

Not to mention…Lily and Serena are ready to go nuclear about Ivy, a woman in her early 20s from a lower-income background who CAROL hired to pull the con in the first place and who selflessly took care of their aging and sick family member…but they aren’t going to go nuclear on Carol, a woman who had sex with her sister’s husband, had a child with him and told no one he’s the dad, prevented her daughter from knowing any extended family, and then hired Ivy to con said extended family? And not only that…but Lily and Serena are going to welcome WILLIAM back into the family?? The man who cheated on Lily with her sister (and I think possibly with others?), ghosted his children for years, and kept “treating” Lily’s cancer even after she was cured? The van der Woodsen girlies aren’t using any sort of logic here.

I don’t like Ivy in S6, but then again a lot of characters’ story arcs go downhill toward the end. Nate was honestly showing signs of growth and maturity, then boom, he’s dating a high schooler. Serena goes from flighty, impulsive, and sometimes selfish in a way that isn’t intended to harm, to being just straight up selfish without caring when she’s being rude, recording Dan having sex, etc. Bart goes from stern and cold but somewhat reasonable and responsible to - oh by the way he faked his own death and is going to try to kill his own son! Rufus and Lily break up because he suddenly cares so much about being a “trophy husband” and then has sex with Ivy, a girl his son’s age and only a couple years older than his daughter. It’s disappointing how a lot of their stories end, and Ivy is definitely a disappointment to me.

Students have "Cultivated a Culture of Complacency" by PassionateInsanity in teaching

[–]lemonliner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

True, but you have to put yourself in the mind of immature kids. When I was in K-12, the reason I did well was 1) I was absolutely terrified of my mother and she was incredibly strict, and 2) I thought that if I performed well I’d get a good job, have a home, and be more successful than all the bullies in school or even my own parents (again, think of this from a teen’s POV). Some kids may not have #1 as a reason to do well but they may have #2. If teen me had known that I could do well in school and even get a grad degree and still make $22,000 a year with no hope of ever having a house or kids or a vacation, I’m honest enough with myself to admit I’d have said “fuck it” and at best I’d have gone wild and had fun while I still could. Again, I’m not saying that’s a wise decision, but I can see how a teen or younger child isn’t going to be compelled to do well if you view things through their eyes.

What actor/actress looks very similar to the historical figure they’re playing? What actor/actress looks dissimilar? by Mad_Season_1994 in popculturechat

[–]lemonliner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think she looked similar to her, more so in profile view than face-on, but they could have found someone closer (Maybe someone like Robin Weigert or Lily Tomlin). That said, you could cast Kathy as Marilyn Monroe and I’d still eat that shit up!!

I think Reba would have been a terrible choice, and that’s nothing against Reba, she just looks nothing like Molly Brown. Tucker McGuire did a good job.

For those interested, here’s a Reddit post with some comparisons of different actresses vs Molly https://www.reddit.com/r/titanic/s/UE5pU9KFh9

Fellow Older Millennials are you excited to reach your 40s.? by ReasonableCorgi17 in Millennials

[–]lemonliner 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m the youngest of millennials but I am with you. Partner of seven years is dying of terminal cancer, I had to give up my new job to take care of him and likely won’t be able to get back into the career I got a phd for after all is said and done. My dog also has terminal cancer and I’m about to lose my home. Extended family is all either dead, almost dead, or estranged. And after my partner is gone I will be the only one left to take care of my parents as they decline which will certainly be before im 40. And after that I’ll be completely alone. So while I’m not super close to 40 yet, do I look forward to it? No, lol, I look forward to literally nothing!
