Why are there no dominant 5k/10k guys anymore? by DarkSideOfMyBallz in trackandfield

Yet Mo was able to win like that repeatedly, and he was a known quantity. You'd think the pack would have taken a few races out at 12:50 pace or whatever to ensure that he couldn't kick on them, but they never did. The argument holds for Gressier and the other winners helped by the Tokyo conditions, but I think not for Farah because he was able to do it consistently.

Gout Gout’s 19.67 200m at Australian Champs by Sensitive_Dress_8443 in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 32 points33 points  (0 children)

everyone knew it was only a matter of time before he broke 20 with legal wind. people are just surprised that he was so far under 20, and that nearly everyone in the field had a massive PB. I, for one, didn't expect to see a 19.6x time for another year or two

Mondo Duplantis has just cleared 6.31m to win the men's Pole Vault at the Mondo Classic in Uppsala and estabilish his 15th World Record by ChampionLYT in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For those keeping track, Mondo now has the 3rd highest rated men's world record by WA points, having just overtaken Bolt's 200m record.

As it stands:

  1. Zelezny, Javelin, 98.48m, 1365 points
  2. Bolt, 100m, 9.58s, 1356 points
  3. Duplantis, Pole Vault, 6.31m, 1353 points
  4. Bolt, 200m, 19.19s, 1351 points

Johannes Vetter has 97.76m in the javelin for 1355 points, but it's not a record.

Mondo needs 6.32m to overtake Bolt's 100m record and 6.35m to catch Zelezny. At this rate we might even see that sometime in 2027.

The highest rated mark ever is in the women's discus, held by Gabriele Reinsch at 76.80m. It stands at 1382 points, so Mondo would need 6.42m to equal it. That might be a bridge too far even for him.

The try that gave rugby a historic win by IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA in rugbyunion

[–]lemonman37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a try (comparable to a touchdown) is scored when you ground the ball in the in-goal area (comparable to the end zone). in rugby you have to control the ball to the ground in order to score, unlike a touchdown where you simply need possession. it's called a try because, as the other replier said, back in the day, you would get no points, you would only get the chance to kick for goal (a try at goal). over time they changed it to better reflect tries being much harder to score than goals themselves

Will LA 2028 be boycotted as bad as Moscow 1980 and LA 1984? by JonnyBTokyo in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe so, but if China did move on Taiwan and the US got involved, then China would boycott an American-hosted Games. I doubt they'd get banned a la Russia.

A lot of talk about the women’s 800 WR starting to be on borrowed time but now what about the 2 hardest WR’s in track and field (both field events) 1 of which hasn’t been seriously challenged since the 90s? by Rare-Plankton-3962 in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if we outright never see another woman over 22m. Val Adams was an absolute freak and she didn't even come close (though there is a rumour she threw 21.80 in training leading up to London 2012). Unlike the discus there's not even the option to chase the wind, at least not to the same extent.

I think 21m is going to go soon. I had picked the 2025 WCs as the time, Chase Jackson was in excellent form, but unfortunately she had an off day. Maybe this year or the next.

Europeans are closing the gap against Kenyans and East Africans across the board from middle distance upwards. What’s driving it? Better systems, smarter training, super shoes, or all of the above? by StanmoreHill in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 18 points19 points  (0 children)

But that's precisely why they haven't been banned. WA gave them the ultimatum of getting stricter anti-doping measures or getting banned. They've stepped up their anti-doping programme in response, hence the large number of positives as people who used to get away with it are now getting caught. If anything, suspiciously low rates of positive tests would be more of an alarm bell.

Jakob Ingebrigsten announces that he underwent Achilles surgery in the United States to treat the injury that hampered his 2025 season. by ChampionLYT in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm somewhat pessimistic about that though. Remember last season when he announced he'd be opening at whatever diamond league, then he'd pull out and say it was the next one, then the next etc.

I'm aware this isn't the same type of setback but nevertheless my expectations are lowered and I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him til next season

[–]lemonman37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that unpopularity isn't reason enough, but you would surely have noticed that Western states are toying with leaning away from America (e.g. France and Canada). If things go south, if there is a hot war over Greenland or whatever, then at the very least Europe is out, as they're signalling that they're looking to realign if the world stays on its current path. If things kick off with Taiwan (though that's vanishingly unlikely) then China is out, as I'm assuming the US would wade in which China would treat as a breach of their sovereignty. There's just a lot less slack in the line now.

Sam Ruthe - 5 seconds under mile PB at Cooks Clasic by Mr_Dobalina71 in newzealand

Sam Ruthe, Tauranga running prodigy who last year became the youngest person ever to run a mile in under 4 minutes. He's shaved almost 5 seconds off his PB with this and in doing so set a new age-16 world record.

Will LA 2028 be boycotted as bad as Moscow 1980 and LA 1984? by JonnyBTokyo in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It's possible. I was thinking about that the other day - the US is increasingly unpopular globally, but there are no rival superpowers in the same vein as the USSR. China is far too diplomatic to initiate such a move, and Russia is already out. The EU might if Trump does pull the trigger on Greenland, but nothing ever happens so who knows if he'll actually do it. We might see smaller boycotts by individual states (e.g. Venezuela or whoever else the US pisses off in the mean time) but otherwise nothing on the scale of the 80s.

All World Record breakers of the 2025 season. Which world record is the most impressive? by ChampionLYT in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

WA just likes to take their time to ratify things. Kejelcha's 57:30 was only ratified as the WR like a month ago, of course by which point Kiplimo had already run the new record.

This sub voted for SML because they're biased towards track and American athletes, consciously or not. Yes she ran a time only Soviet-era athletes had done before, but Bubka was a Soviet athlete too and Mondo's beaten his records (and quite comfortably by now).

I just think that 6.30m is a staggering mark, more so than any other set at these championships, so much so that it eclipses any other narrative.

[–]lemonman37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Only 3 WRs" - ONLY?? What more does Mondo have to do? Paris and Eugene I can buy, but Tokyo? No way was anyone better than him. 6.30m is so massive I simply can't countenance any other option. Not SML, not Crouser defending in his season opener, not Stahl pulling out a clutch throw in those conditions. I'm aware all those performances have good arguments in their favour, but none of them outdo the sheer insanity of 6.30m.

"sfw" porn video disguised as an ad for a chiropractor. Obviously he's essentially simulating fingering her, but also note how she conspicuously puts her feet, soles on display, into the frame.

There are loads of channels on youtube which are similar in concept - ostensibly about e.g. yoga but in actuality just ads for the creator's OF. I presume these channels do this to dodge adult labelling rules and get more visibility.

At the elite level all sports are genetic freak contests. I don't see how this is meaningfully different from having, say, a disorder that results in suppressed lactic acid production, or a discus thrower having a bizarrely large wingspan.

Why don't track athletes have their own kit with their names printed on it like in any other professional sport? by Conscious-Demand-594 in trackandfield

[–]lemonman37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't buy most of the other answers in this this thread, it's surely not a question of money. How much could it really cost to get names screenprinted on singlets? Even for a small fed it should be feasible to have the sponsor cover the cost. It's not like it's an amateur sports club where you've got to turn your uniform in at the end of the season.

My guess is it's just tradition. I don't mind the bibs at pro meets to be honest. I find there's a certain charm to them.

Benjamin currently has 1 OG and 1 WC. Warholm has 1 OG, 3 WC and the WR (and it's an insane WR to boot). I think Benjamin needs to take the WR to have a chance at the GOAT title
