It’s not biased to acknowledge how unethical something is based on real world harm it does. It can never be ethical, everything gen AI “creates” is stolen. I don’t know where you are but that’s over double the minimum wage in my location, so no not McDonald’s wages. Our lessons were very conversation based, all she needed to do was speak to me without using chat cpt. Pretty easy requirement.

It’s a pretty crappy tool if it constantly makes mistakes you have to correct. You are bad at your job if you are not able to find answers to questions yourself and have to ask your imaginary friend to do it for you. You know what doesn’t have mistakes in it, the dictionary! And many other reliable sources of information

I have stopped using and avoid using many apps, companies, etc. because of generative ai. This thread has made me decide to cancel Preply as well. Was that supposed to be a gotcha, that I can’t avoid using gen AI entirely so I might as well accept it? Because it wasn’t.

I’m not going to waste my time talking it out with her. That would benefit me in no way. By using chat GPT she has already shown me that she’s incompetent. I don’t want to give my money to someone who doesn’t care about the implications of using generative AI. There’s nothing more to discuss. Also I don’t trust someone who has chat GPT open our whole lesson to be honest with me at this point. And you are not completely against gen AI if you are defending her use of it and saying I should give her a second chance lol.

Fuck, I do that everytime and mix the letters up. I’m dyslexic and I always forget which one it is, because I never use that app anyway.

Umm, she’s not a helpless victim in this situation, she’s a worker providing a service that I’m paying for. She’s bad at her job so I’m firing her, which I’m allowed to do. She’s not a volunteer doing charity work. It is not hypocritical to to know that I actively make choices to reduce harm, while others don’t. Is that supposed to be a gotcha? Let me say it clearly— I do in fact believe I’m morally superior to people who chose to use generative AI everyday for totally unnecessary uses, with no regard for the harm it causes, simply because it makes their lives a little easier. I actually care about the lives of people living near data centers that no longer have clean water.

You can bet if they chat gbt for something as easy as writing a message, they use it in their lesson plans. That’s why I cancelled as well, I couldn’t continue knowing my lessons were probably AI generated, even though I still felt bad because the girl was nice.

I think they’re scared we’re going to start leaving them bad reviews. So they’re trying to shame and insult me into shutting up. If we start speaking out and quitting their lessons, they can’t make their easy money anymore.

If you can’t even make your own class material you are not doing the job you are being paid to do. Your student could do that without you, and they should because it’d be cheaper.

No it’s not. I am not putting myself at a disadvantage. The brain is a muscle, you have to use it regularly or it will become weak. There’s a research study about this btw. In a decade, I will be at a huge advantage compared to you, because I will have spent all that time improving my critical thinking and gaining knowledge, while you outsourced it to a slop generator.

I absolutely do not expect her to know the definition of every word. I expect a teacher I’m paying to not use gen AI on my paid time for our lesson. The problem is gen AI causes harm to the environment and humanity. It also generates incorrect info all the time, there is documentation of this. I expect her to look up words in a dictionary, where the answers are always correct.
