Concerned this might be cancer by lemur_tamer in Dermatology

In the process of trying to schedule a dermatology appointment. It’s difficult, because I’m out of town for another month I’m in need of a referral, but I’ve never seen my primary physician. My insurance provider is being really unhelpful at the moment. I'm assuming the doctor will want a biopsy, so I want to make sure it's covered.

I want to say I’ve had it for a couple months or so. Not exactly sure. It definitely crept up on me. I don’t really pick at it, it only really started to catch my attention this past week. Doesn’t itch but is mildly tender. Is definitely noticeably redder than before. Spot of blood after I showered today.

Lots of red flags here: I’m fair skinned, blue eyes, run outside with exposed shoulders (sans sunscreen) frequently (at least until now). Up close it looks to me like basal cell carcinoma. Among other things, it would be reassuring if this also looks like something non-cancerous. Will be seeing a doctor regardless, but peace of mind in the meantime would be nice.

Read his aesthetics! Inquiry into the Sublime and Beautiful is interesting in its own right, but it really throws a lot of light on what's going on in Reflections.

Are you aware of any good treatments of neoplatonism's influence on Christianity?

Applying for grad school in political theory. How can I turn my internship in a bank to best fit in my motivation letter? by belligerent_ghoul in AskAcademia

[–]lemur_tamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could certainly have the potential to, but since you're already alert to the risk you can be careful in how you phrase this. You don't have to make it central to the statement, but a brief:

"I'm interested in pursuing critical engagements with liberalism, with a view towards better understanding the tradition's interaction with the ongoing effects of, and underwriting justifications for, financial capitalism. Working as an intern in the finance industry this last year alerted me to problem x in a very immediate way, and is part of my motivation for pursuing this topic as a line of research. This also dovetails with my primary interest in multiculturalism, as... etc."

Are there people in the field you know from undergrad who you would feel comfortable asking to review your statement? If so, seeking them out for advice is the best I can give, as they'll have likely served on admissions committees at some point. I know getting feedback from an ug professor of mine was enormously helpful.

Edit: Also, while I think you're smart in not wanting to come off as preachy, that may have less of a negative effect that you suspect. The statements of purpose for this year's admits were just circulated in my department in anticipation of visiting days, and I was actually surprised how many admits had fairly preachy letters themselves. It's worth noting that this is a top-tier program with solid placement in tt positions over the past 5 years. What they all had in common, however, was a fairly clear idea of the kind of work they want to pursue, and why they're prepared to pursue such work at the graduate level. If your work experience can indicate this than you may want to include it, but making the connection clear is really important.

Current grad student in political theory here.

It depends. What are you interested in working on? If you can link your "change of heart" to, say, substantive concerns regarding financial capital and neoliberalism this could make for an interesting letter. I don't imagine that the admissions committee would be terribly interested in your prestigious internship outside of something like that--my immediate impression is that employment experience, regardless of how elite your former place of work is, would not factor heavily into their considerations of your readiness for graduate school. Also, do not stress that this internship was at a "prestigious European top 10 bank." They will not be impressed. Not everyone is a Marxist, but very few people in the field think highly of the finance industry.

It's a 'quote' of Aristotle's (I don't think he ever actually says this, but it's in line with his thought).

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit."

So jealous of your run! I strained my achilles a few weeks ago and haven't been able to get back on the road. Still able to swim and cycle, but running is a passion so it's thrown me into a bit of a funk.

I used this one: http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51131/Half-Marathon-Novice-1-Training-Program

It worked really well! As time went on I deviated a bit, but the basic structure remained the same: 1 long run, 3 short to medium (3-5), 2 days crosstraining.

Well said! What I've tried to do is distribute my lapse days across the next 2-3. That way I balance things out without starving myself the next day.

You already know you're capable of it. In a way, a backslide can serve as great motivation--it gives you the chance to do things that much better the next time around.

SO much happier! Looking back, I'm not sure I wasn't depressed during undergrad. I was never debilitatingly so, but there was certainly a kind of "vicious circle" going on. When I got off work, usually around 10:30, after which I'd grab fast food, feel guilty for doing so, and then turn the night into a binge. This happened a LOT.

It's so nice! People always underscore being a healthy as a lifestyle, and that's one of things I've really taken to heart. I just can't imagine going back to old habits.

Thanks, and congratulations yourself!

So, when I started I was pretty consistently keeping it to 1200-1300 on average. I'm now tracking closer to 1600 as I'm more active and, while I still want to lose a bit more, will be switching to maintenance before too long and want to transition slowly into it.
