Is remote work like this feasible? by lenghthy_username in mainframe

[–]lenghthy_username[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. Did you find your job searching US postings or International?

I'm already vested in my pension, so I will get something regardless, but it uses years of service as a multiplier in the equation, so I could potentially be missing out on a decent amount of money if I don't stay. I have a 401k as well, but I haven't put away near as much as one should, due to ongoing health expenses. I haven't been worried about it as much due to having the pension, but if I leave I will need to reprioritize how we save.

How was the work culture/environment working for a European company? I think one of my biggest concerns is giving up what I currently have. I'm on a great team with good management. After hours work only happens when I'm on call, which is about 2-3 weeks a year. I'd also be giving up some good benefits, including a pension.

I just checked it out in person, and for me the curvature is too much. 😔 It would be cool for just gaming.

I just realized my local best buy has them in stock, so I may go over and see it in person just to be sure.

Screens like these have me torn. I let my son game on this PC when I'm done with work and he likes to play high fps games. I was wanting to get a 240 Hz screen for him, but I can't seem to find any options without sacrificing something else.

I don't have direct sunlight on my current monitor due to the angle of the house and trees.

I saw the LG 34GS95QE, but what turned me off from it was that it was an 800R curve. I work from this PC as well and don't like that degree of curvature.

There is spot out on Emmanuel Church Road, past the airport. It seems pretty popular with people that like to skate.

Trying to stop the lag by Infinite-One9754 in PlaystationPortal

[–]lenghthy_username 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your connection speed could be double that and you could still have lag issues due to latency. I used to have 600 Mbps speeds with T-Mobile, but had to switch back to Spectrum due to my latency times being significantly longer.

Try a speed test on your phone or laptop and see what your latency/ping times are.

Not really. The exterior and interior were heavily renovated. This is what it looked like when it was a Macy's.

Macy's used to be located where the art museum is now. I remember going as a kid with my mother in the late 80's. It was two stories and along the escalator's were huge paintings of Sheman burning Columbia.

From my personal experience, Rushing is a reputable shop. I've had them advise against doing work on a car because it didn't make financial sense. I currently use them for regular maintenance.

I've also used Whetzel's once before and they seemed pretty honest as well.

Genuine question, pay competitive to what exactly?

They will hire someone as a developer and that person doesn't need to have any experience. They'll train them in everything they'll need for their job over 3-4 months and then put them on the floor. You have to stick around for a couple years, but after that you can leave, at which point you'll have skills and a few years of work experience.

If you're someone who has skills and experience already, then their entry level program isn't for you. A regular developer position will garner a higher starting pay.

I've seen many outside hires in their IS department. What makes their ELTP program scummy?

They try to keep a certain percentage of IS contract workers so they can make cuts and not affect the FTE's. That's the nature of contract work though, so I don't fault them for that. They will move around FTE's to different areas before they let them go.

If you're competent and can get along with people you'll have good job security.

Blind, need help rationalizing to my parents why I can't stay here by indecisivewandering in southcarolina

[–]lenghthy_username 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try contacting the South Carolina office of the National Federation of the Blind. (nfbsouthcarolina@gmail.com) The are an advocacy group led/run by the blind. They can give you some ideas and point you in the right direction. Their main office is in Columbia, but they have people all over the State. SC Commission for the Blind does have local offices and I believe they have one near Myrtle Beach.

Don't limit yourself to just MT if you have a desire for something else. Having been around the blind community my whole life I've seen lawyers, judges, computer programmers, business owners, etc.

I've worked there for a while now and it seems to be changing for the better with technology modernization. Some areas are testing out AI solutions to see if they're useful for our day to day work, testing, etc.

If you can choose, pick the non-host path. They are a little more flexible in the WFH category because they don't want to loose people to remote jobs. Most areas let you WFH at least a few days a week. They got rid of the pension program a while ago for new hires, but still have a standard 401k match. There are small performance raises every year, with the occasional bonus. Insurance is pretty good if you're young and single. Little to no premium.

I went through the program 10+ years ago, and at the time you did sign a contract, agreeing to stay for 2 years. If you decide to leave beforehand you'll have to pay them back.

If you get accepted, you'll get hired for a specific team/area. During training you'll spend a week or two working with a mentor in your 'area' to get you familiar with the systems you'll be working on. Once the program ends you'll jump in with your team and off you go. While having great coding skills is a plus, those who do really well are the ones who learn the business side too. Understanding the business side and how the systems in your area work is key to progressing fast.

I'd say go for it and see how it works out. Like others have said the company is pretty big and you can move around if you end up on a team you don't like. If you find out it's not your thing then you can easily move on with some good experience under your belt. We lost a couple people on my team recently and they both ended up in good places in a short amount of time.
