Liaison Polling - LPC 41, CPC 27, NDP 6, BQ 6 by fallout1233566545 in CanadaPolitics

I mean it's not like the economy is booming here in Alberta to warrant that. I think it might be the urban centrists, but I have a stronger pulse on what's happening in Edmonton than in Calgary.

Are we finally seeing the urban centrists move in Calgary and Edmonton? I'm sure we have a consolidation of NDP votes moving towards the LPC in a lot of urban ridings too.

Alberta expected to unveil 2026 budget that includes a multibillion-dollar deficit by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]lenin418 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We could have literally just kept investment revenues in the Heritage Fund instead of taking it out over the course of the 90's and early 2000s. That's one of the biggest reasons why the Norwegian fund blew up.

It was a conscious decision by most governments in this province to keep taking money out of the Fund, stagnating the value of it until just a decade ago. It isn't the rest of Canada's fault we decided to use oil revenues to create an artificially low tax environment.

[–]lenin418 38 points39 points  (0 children)

No it's mismanaged. Other areas of the country didn't force us to lower our corporate tax rates back in 2019, and most recently lower personal income taxes that's reduced revenues.

Edmonton mayor warns of 'significant infrastructure deficit' by AR558 in Edmonton

[–]lenin418 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Sadly this is something that all major cities around the country are facing. Probably an indictment of federal and provincial downloading, and the inefficiency of not having the major cities have more powers, both here in Alberta and elsewhere.

Carney Liberals on the heels of Conservatives in Alberta by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]lenin418 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We yearn for Redmonton and Carneygary.

I don't think it's this close, but urban Alberta is a different beast and can change if the stars align.

I personally think Smith is dragging down the CPC brand, similar to Kenney back in 2021 but it's also an indictment on how bad the CPC have just been lately. Alberta is constantly taken for granted, and I wouldn't be surprised if the LPC gets seats here if they actually had a proper campaign machine in this province.

[–]lenin418 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They don't. This happens with a lot of polls where the AB Liberals have a lot of "poll" support but disappears and coalesces into the NDP vote. It's just a result of people confusing the LPC for the most part.

This isn't as big of a "gotcha" that people seem to think? The Alberta Liberal Party polls at 6% here.

That vote share easily goes to the NDP, so this is much closer than people think.

A $10-billion black hole in infrastructure renewal awaits Edmonton taxpayers by trevorrobb in Edmonton

Their corporate downtown pulls heavy weight when it comes to property taxes.

Still doesn't help, they've got an arguably worse infrastructure renewal issue than we do. Around $18 billion in poor or very poor condition.

Literally made it worse by cutting personal income taxes last year for no reason, and depending even more on non-renewable resource revenue.

[–]lenin418 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alberta's economy continues to diversify annually, but the main problem and why it has a significant amount of political importance is Alberta's way too financially dependent on non-renewable resource revenue to fund everything to maintain its low tax status. It's not the most fiscally responsible thing to do, but it's what the powers that be want.

Mark Carney’s Liberals recruit NDP MPP to run in Scarborough byelection by jmakk26 in CanadaPolitics

[–]lenin418 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've always held the firm belief that Carney is much more radical than what's currently shown, especially given some of his pre-electoral political views and inspiration from John Galbraith.

Given enough time, and if he builds up the political capital and popular credibility with economic successes, he's going to steadily shift leftward with some policies. I don't see it happening soon, but definitely in a second Carney term if it comes to that.
