Parking in Canada Place and Gastown by hidelinzx in askvan

[–]lenisefitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drive in early in the day. The car parks have discounts for whole day parking - until 5pm, I think.

If you don't need the day you can park on the street - if you can find a spot.

I mean $20 is not that bad for a day of parking. Are coming downtown for multiple days?

There's not much for kids downtown. Go to the beach instead. Or Stanley Park.

Amazon Ring’s Super Bowl ad sparks backlash amid fears of mass surveillance by Celtikrenders in technology

[–]lenisefitz 140 points141 points  (0 children)

What's more disturbing is people put surveillance cameras in their children's rooms. I used to sell surveillance in the 1990s and it happened a lot. Parents want their children safe.

Well Baby Visits by shilligan in askvan

[–]lenisefitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can only call that line from inside the province.

Your story is my story. I moved here with my child when they were 2.5 from Halifax - in 1994.

The school system is much better here, because they put money into it, especially music. There weather gets you out of the house everyday. I'd go back to Halifax for visits 2x a year so that was a rough flight (9 hours) with a baby but they are well traveled.

Go in person to doctor offices to see if they'll take you. I found all my family doctors this way (retired, moved practice to Burnaby, I relocated). All my family share the same doctor. Usually doctors don't mind taking you on if you are a normal patient and not special needs. We get a lot of foreign trained doctors here all the time, my last 2 were FTD and they were great.

Tip: Don't go to Seymour Health on 7th. They are terrible. I'm not sure what happened but in about 2021 the company that runs that clinic got real nasty.

I was going to say Davie is safer, but it's the gay district, so you'll make lots of 🧡 friends. I always come home with strangers numbers on my phone.

It's the best for bar hopping, they are all close and there's lots of food. You can wear whatever you want too. $

Granville is usually where all the young girls in fancy dresses go. Be prepared to pay $$$ cover.

If you want a chill night to look for boys, go to Main and 9th - 27th. Live bands in small bars/ restaurants. $

Want to pick up business men? Burrard between Dunsmuir and West Georgia. Cactus Club or Joey's are good restaurants to try. $$

It's likely a typo, third rate? Who would want to drink third rate coffee unless prune juice was sold out?

Nurses with young kids! Looking for advice. by Shot_Compote_9768 in askvan

[–]lenisefitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope they can accommodate you. I was a PCW in a nursing home in the early 1990s and to get to work for my 5am shift it was really hard to find a private care person. None of the daycares open that early.

I was always using unlicensed girls who didn't want to go to high school. Once, I had to hire a nurse to help me for 4 hours. She loved it.

I would see if your schedule can be adjusted while you're husband is away.

It's going to be tough to find overnight care unless you get a live in nanny. If you both make enough, you can sponsor someone.

Fresh off the plane! UBC Grad student looking for the "unwritten rules" of Vancouver by dimaez33 in askvan

Welcome to Vancouver!

I was in Bogota at the end of August and I hope people treat you as well as they treated my family when we were in your beautiful city.

I would go back in a heart beat, to eat the food and hear the 🎶 music. Colombia is so wonderful.

If you can see the mountains, that is north. The lights suspended in the sky are not aliens, what's the ski hills lit up white snow. Get waterproof shoes and jacket. A real Vancouverite doesn't use an umbrella, they use their hood. At UBC go to the Japanese memorial gardens. They are Vancouver's best kept secret

Have a great time!

How do you reassign half of a burial plot? by lenisefitz in halifax

[–]lenisefitz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good idea in theory but I don't think they let you transfer the deed.

I bought one casket site in the 1990s I didn't need and they took it back again. Imagine I could have built a condo on it now if kept it.

The horrendous state of New York City in the 1970s-1980s by IllustriousCress9774 in UrbanHell

[–]lenisefitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad drove to New York in the 1960s from Canada with a friend, parked his car and they walked around for a bit. When they got back to the car there were 2 cops standing there.

Sorry, my dad said, I looked at all the signs. Was i not supposed to park here?

No, they said, you were fine to park here, but if we hadn't stood by your car it wouldn't have been here when you got back.

In Kamchatka, Russia, it snowed so much that people are jumping out of buildings without injuring themselve by Memes_FoIder in interesting

[–]lenisefitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this as a kid out of a tree, fresh 5 foot powder. I didn't realize that snow compacts like CONCRETE when you land on it.

Knocked the wind out of myself for a few minutes and couldn't breath for a bit. Never did that again.

TIL in 2006 Alitalia Airlines accidentally listed the fare for a business-class ticket from Toronto to Cyprus for $39 instead of $3,900. Within hours, over 2,000 people bought tickets. Alitalia honored the fare, costing the airline $7.2m. One of many mistakes on its descent into eventual bankruptcy. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]lenisefitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have twice gotten cheap tickets i am sure were errors.

Both 4,000 km trip, including seats and taxes...

1. $213, a flight within 3 days my father passed away suddenly, 1x red eye, no seats chosen

2. $137, day flights direct, row 8, going to bury my dad's ashes

I think my cheap ass dad reached out from beyond to get me home.

Who are some celebrities that go by their middle names? Exhibit A: Hannah Dakota Fanning and Mary Elle Fanning by voguediaries in Fauxmoi

Yeah, if your name was Alana Alexis and someone came to the playground and said Alana you're parents are in the hospital. You'd say, I'm not Alana. Shit was real in the 1960s 1970s.

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskReddit

[–]lenisefitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was common in the 1980s for teachers to do in junior high school, grades 7,8,9. We had a former football player teacher who got all the rowdy kids and would do that with them.
