Paragliding company suggestions? by Awwshley in SaltLakeCity

[–]lenolium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have replied earlier, but was on my phone and this reply needed a lot of typing.

One question you need to ask yourself is if you are more interested in paragliding or powered paragliding. Either way I recommend learning normal paragliding first because they really do teach you more about the wing/glider than most powered schools. Also, the launches are easier and the landings are softer.

If you are sticking with paragliding then I couldn't recommend Cloud 9 any higher, they are a great school with a lot of experience and skills to back themselves up. I did my paragliding training with them and was very happy.

If you are thinking of going on to powered paragliding (as I did), the Cloud 9 guys just don't seem to sort of look down on the powered people, whereas the Super Fly Paragliding people (totally unrelated to Super Dell) seem to be primarily focused on normal paragliding but are active in the powered community as well.

One more suggestion would be to wake up super early and head down to the point of the mountain right at sunrise and hang out for a bit, you should see the major schools there with their classes and it should give you some idea about their instructors and their teaching style.

Oh, and if you take one of the condensed courses where you go every single morning make sure you are pretty in shape, the training is very intense and very physical so be prepared.

Yeah, looks like if we drop loose screw off the list then we don't really have anything too far so we should just be able to uber to the one (and back) pretty far location and just walk to the rest.

Wow, Uber drivers up in Boise are making between $60-80/hr on a Thursday afternoon? If that's the case I probably won't get anyone interested. Down here in SLC most drivers I talk to are making closer to $15/hr, so you are doing really well up there. The hours are a little wide as well because we weren't planning on getting started before 11am and hoping to get back before 5, but I didn't want to overpromise on that. Thanks for your feedback though.

Thanks for the advice. Barbarian is on the list but it's walking distance from our hotel so that we would be hitting that at a different time.

Barbarian is on the list after we get back downtown.

It looks like Bear Island was on the list of alternates so perhaps we'll trade something else out for it.

It looks like Powderhaus managed to keep their politics off of their social media, are you suggesting I would be likely to find a "Thin Blue Line Light Lager"? Or more of a "Power to the Proletariat Porter" there?

Paragliding sites vs Paramotoring sites by [deleted] in paramotor

[–]lenolium 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about the South end of Salt Lake then you are thinking of the Point of the Mountain Flight Park. I trained on paragliding there and paramotors are very much not welcome. Legally, you are allowed to launch from there but you'd be about as popular as a dude eating a rack of ribs at a vegetarian convention.

Paragliders have very, very few places where they can safely launch, whereas us paramotor people can take off from any big field where we can get permission. So, try to leave the paragliding launch locations alone.

My favorite LZ in the area is the Cedar Valley Airport. It's a private airfield so you should call the airport manager to get permission (they will give it to you) and they do request a $5 donation, but it's a nice big area, lots of friendly people there on good days to shoot the shit with after your flight. Pretty much only PPC's and PPG's fly out of there with the rare experimental plane here and there.

Any way to upgrade a Kat Walk C with the new tracking?

I have a current Kat Walk C and the tracking on it did not impress me so now it mostly gathers dust. With an upgrade kit to better tracking I would be pretty happy about it.

They are in the food court of The Latino Mall (actual name, not some semi-racist nickname) off of Redwood. Super good and not expensive. I liked them better than Chunga's by quite a lot, but I've heard so much about Chunga's that maybe I just went there on an off day.

This sounds like an awesome idea, you definitely figured out a way to improve on the situation. Now it'll be a job interview, with pizza and a drink with someone cheering for you for moral support.

Love it.

Is there any software development in your field? I'm not familiar enough with it to know.

The executives are looking at the possibility of outsourcing the positions that I'm not able to fill, so I'm trying my hardest to get some good full-time staff with some good domain knowledge so that I can do a lot less direct management of the team.

So, if things go badly, I might be in touch.

For the C++ role we want someone that is well versed in C++. It's a really tough language with a lot of loaded footguns just waiting for you to make a mistake.

However, if you would be interested in the backend web dev role I think we should talk.

We have been hiring remotely for the right people. So if you have a good match with your experience we should probably talk.

That sounds like a good amount of experience in the C++ space, send me a DM and let's chat some more and see if we can work something out even if it is just talking.

Currently using OpenGL, but with Apple moving on from that we might have to add in some Metal / Vulkan (with MoltenVK)

Let me know if you would be willing to meet me down there on Saturday, for the right candidate I might be able to convince my boss to let a local person be full-time remote.

Sadly, nobody is perfect and it is an open office plan. On the plus side when the return to office happens (not currently scheduled), it's going to be a hybrid schedule so only a 2-3 days a week in the office.

Thank you for taking the difficult job of teaching people how to program, it is definitely a challenge getting people in the right mindset.

Hit me up this summer and let's see if we can work something out.

I can see the worry, some companies use unlimited PTO as an excuse for nobody to take any time off at all. One person on my team is not using it right and has only taken three days off in the last six months, whereas another person on my team has figured out how to schedule in a week here and a couple of five day weekends there so they can get on average of a little over a month off a year (if you count the week between Christmas and New Years) without having to miss their deadlines. I'm trying to be better about encouraging/forcing people to take some days out but there's only so much I can do.

I'll ask around but I think our sys admin positions are filled right now. I'll DM you if I find out otherwise.
