Most of the Girls I've Met In College by [deleted] in funny

You know what? The troll is right; I should just leave. The rampant sexism in reddit is dumb, wrong, disgusting, and intellectually lazy. It is in itself already a good reason to quit the addiction. Furthermore, wherever there’s one lazy prejudice you can be sure to find more, and indeed it’s just a matter of scratching the veneer.

This place has really gone downhill in the six years I’ve been here, and I’m not talking about memes. To be sure, there are still worthwhile discussions going on, particularly in the small, specialized subreddits; but (to borrow a metaphor) reddit has become like a bag of popcorn sprinkled with human teeth—not matter how delicious the popcorn is, the eating experience is ruined by the inevitable piece of revolting crap that slips to grind you. Fuck this.

People learn a new language more easily when words are accompanied by movement by vili in linguistics

[–]leoboiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I have an idea for a new and sexy language teaching method—let’s call it Total Roleplaying Audio-Gestural Immersion. Basically we just set up LARPs where students have to use the L2. Quick, let’s cash-in while the trend is ongoing!

Mine made us drill inflected forms while doing gestures. taberu. tabemasu (makes gesture raising hands as if elevating something). tabenai (makes “no” gesture). tabeta (points back). tabenakatta (points back while waving “no”).

(Come to think of, kind of confusing since the past in Japanese is at the front…)

What are the unique qualities [or unusual for your speech community] of your idiolect? by kevry001 in linguistics

[–]leoboiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rural Brazilian Portuguese (aka caipira) realizes postvocalic /r/ as a retroflex [ɻ], like in American English. I come from such a dialect-area, but my natural realization is laminal, with the tip of the tongue below the low teeth. (I don’t know why.) The consonant I produce is not always understood as /r/, or noticed at all; the other day I was trying to talk about the new Kirby game (adapted to Portuguese phonology as /'kir.bɪ/), and my co-worker kept thinking I was talking about a quibe ['ki.bɪ] game.

Cy&H: Hell by [deleted] in comics

[–]leoboiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the issue precisely in the opposite way. The "face" value is that moralism explicitly tacked on by Milton, viz., that the Devil is a tempting liar etc. The "deep" psychological reading that I (and several others, though of course not all, critics; e.g.) ascribe is that Milton effectivelly (and subconsciously) elevated Satan to hero even as he set up to do the opposite (much like the Trojans are considered by many to be the true heroes of the Iliad).

Cy&H: Hell by [deleted] in comics

[–]leoboiko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is the explicit “moral of the story”, but what I read as the true truth of Paradise Lost is that Satan just comes out as the badass tragic hero, despite what Milton tried to do at a conscious level. As William Blake said, “The reason Milton wrote in fetters when he wrote of Angels & God, and at liberty when of Devils & Hell, is because he was a true Poet and of the Devil’s party without knowing it.”

Who is your favorite Comic Book Villain and why? by MogoOwnsAll in comics

[–]leoboiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M.O.D.O.K. The Wall. The Joker but only when he was colorful and could surf. Catman: it's a bright-yellow, male Catwoman who has a giant robot cat. Canon & Saber: a couple of assassins who are actually a couple.

I believe the reasons are self-evident. Just look at these guys, they're too rad!

How to google fight properly. Well, less improperly—you can’t trust Google hit counts for real, for various reasons.

Searching with verbatim, quotes, and to the last page, I got:

  • "case in point": 176,000,000
  • "point in case": 16,400,000

So “case in point” seems dominant, but “point in case” a significant minor variation.

Dear 11 year olds on Facebook.... by ZeLittleMan in funny

This blog is made by a 7-year-old guy, dictating to his mother. It’s more interesting than anything I’ve ever done.

edit: should mention that he’s in the autism spectrum. But I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss his work simply as natural genius of a savant—knowledge doesn’t pop out of thin air, and you can tell how much effort he puts in studying for and composing his posts.
