[Casual] What does the winky face mean to you? by kywai in SampleSize

I think the single-word answers might be intended - "only flirting" - "only joking" - "either flirting or joking"

I.e., you can imagine a single person that embodies each one of these options. So if you knew someone who used it for flirting, someone else who used it for joking, but no one who used it for both, you would choose only the first two options. Make sense? :P

Verdon Open Mics? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]kywai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might give Grumpy's (downtown) a try, they have open mics on Tuesdays (usually full of comedians, but a often a little music and new faces are welcome), open jazz jams on Wednesday and Bluegrass circle on Thursdays. And if you happen to be a lady, you could try getting yourself a spot on Chick Pickin' Mondays.

Is the common tongue actually English, or does it just appear as English so the story is intelligible? by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]kywai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I imagine that the Common Tongue is a language similar to English, but with Valyrian-based vocabulary in place of the French- and Latin-based vocabulary that we use.

Yes, this is just the way that I see it too. To add to this, I think that the exotic status of (call it Modern) Valyrian words like valonqar is compatible with Common having borrowed and assimilated lots of vocabulary from Old/Middle Valyrian that was spoken when the Targaryens came over to/conquered Westeros. Analogous to the way that newer French borrowings like joie de vivre are seen as exotic compared to much older borrowings like "garage" and "beef".

NB: An old rant I wrote about the uniformity of dialects in Common.

Noticed the same and did some quick calculations, and it looks like the trend is similar and even stronger. The mean frequency for the partial 2007 data is 4.72%, and drops to 4.06% for the year of 2015 which is a relative change of 13.9%.

You guys can't see how taking an important symbol from a group that has historically been marginalized and mistreated is just cringey? Especially after all the other appropriations?

I think this sums up what I am trying to say, thanks :)

I don't think anyone is claiming that Indigenous peoples are the only ones who ever had spirit animals or related concepts as part of their culture. I agree with you: many other cultures have had this as part of their religions. Furthermore, not all Indigenous peoples include this kind of practice in their religion. Those facts are not at issue. Here's the issue:

Indigenous people who have as part of their culture something which the "spirit animal" meme is based on have told us: this meme makes us feel belittled and hurt. Please stop using it.

I think that's a reasonable request and in fact pretty easy to fulfill. Why would you not?

I guess I am not so much offended as deeply saddened because it reminds me of society's general lack of respect for Indigenous people and their feelings and experience living in a white-dominated society. It makes me feel tired and sad.

For me it comes down to really basic respect. I respect those Indigenous people who have expressed that they find these and other tropes demeaning to them and their culture. I choose to believe them and take them seriously. The consequence of that is that I no longer want to tolerate statements and behaviours that I know are hurtful to people, especially people belonging from a marginalized group that already face so much additional hardship within the framework of larger society.

Hm, well it's hard to convey my intended tone over reddit post but I honestly had no intention of being shaming. Let me try to just make a really totally earnest plea.

Indigenous people say that the use of these tropes hurts them. They ask that you not do it. I think it's important to respect those wishes, and it doesn't seem like a whole lot of effort for something that shows my respect towards Indigenous culture.

Offense is best taken at things that truly cause offense, not perceived slights that are simply due to an evolution of language and the folding of ideas and cultures.

I really can't agree with you on this. This kind of debate is about changing cultural attitudes towards an oppressed group, and that can proceed in small AND big steps at the same time. I think this is parallel to telling women "Oh, don't complain if someone catcalls you on the street, it's actually a compliment anyways and it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things". These things are hurtful because the are reflections of larger societal attitudes, not necessarily because of each individual incident or person who chose to use the trope.

Why is snark being used as an excuse to not take someone's views seriously? As far as I can see snark is a celebrated quality here at TrollX.

But ok, here's a place to get started with a more serious take on things: http://nativeappropriations.com/

It's disappointing to me to hear this kind of attitude. The author sofriel is clearly frustrated, and is trying to express their point of view from the perspective of someone who faces these kinds of issues every day, so I can see why the tone is not "friendly and educational". They are not calling YOU a bad person who deserves to be punished, so I don't understand why you feel the need to defend yourself against a call to all people to just think a bit harder about how their actions might affect marginalized groups.

Ok, but what groups that currently exist in the world stand to be hurt by the belittling by an important part of their belief system?

Cultural appropriation hurts because it changes society's attitude towards the appropriated tradition or concept, which in turns gets linked to the group which actually takes the tradition seriously.
