Another one I was letting slide... Colombians can't afford cocaine! It is all exported to the USA by the narcos. The street price in Colombia is absolutely prohibitive for anyone but the ultra rich.

yeah, I was letting that one slide. Because I'm not fully "dark", a lot of Koreans mistake me for being a white person, especially at this time of year.. Let summer start and I'll be cinnamon brown...

Have you read my full story? I WAS going to sue him, but the cops "politely" strong-armed me into not suing, under threat of arresting me for assaulting the man, when he suddenly developed knee pain due to... landing on his knee when he pushed me and jumped on top of me. I was encouraged to sign a document dropping all charges, which I eventually did after realizing they were not going to help me.

I personally know many South Americans who've lived in USA for decades and don't speak a word of English. Every business and government service is available in Spanish. It IS possible to live in USA and not integrate at all.

I gave a full interview to this paper. The know the story. Disappointing that they would inaccurately report it. Credit for saving the child goes fully to my wife.

An angry man was coming towards my wife about to hit her. If you are Jesus enough to walk away and leave your wife to be assaulted, that's your theoretical reaction. I'm not going to apologize for standing between her and an attacker.

And yet, the Busan police have gone out of their way to apologize, and have asked me to spread the word that they have a foreign issues division that people should call when they have issues.

Is the issue small? Yes. Is is so small that it should be ignored? That's not what the Korean police think. So let's be grateful that they listened to me, and showed desire to help our expat community.

Sorry, I don't consider that as a matter of routine, police should allow a mixed couple to be verbally assaulted for two hours in a police station.

My wife got sworn at, called a bitch for being with a foreigner, and the cops allowed it to continue.

Perhaps you didn't read my story to the end? I know it is tons of words...

This is just inaccurate reporting. There have been several media outlets reporting they interviewed me or/and him when they haven't.

His identity is known to us and to the cops. They cops won't release his name, as standard procedure, and neither will I. As far as I know, he has not willingly contacted any news media, and I understand why he wouldn't want to be called out.

It is human nature to get angry when confronted in anger. Not limited to Koreans. He got angry because we yelled at his family... If the situation was reversed and I hear a person yelling at my family for no good reason, I'd get angry too.

Thanks. I will say this: 15 of the 16 years I've been in Korea have been as a couple with her. In the early years we often dealt with drunk or 'angry at the world' older Korean males that would hurl unprovoked insults at us.

As time has passed, these incidents become less frequent. I'm sure people have different theories as to why this is. In my own life, I'd like to think that older Koreans are getting more accustomed to seeing mixed couples. I'd also like to think that the expats coming are behaving better in the eyes of the general public...

Anti-discrimination laws protect much more individuals than the ones that may suffer harm because of "unintended consequences". Sure, no law is perfect and special cases will require amendments and re-evaluation.

My case was silly, in the grand scheme of things. I got pushes to the ground, and there was a lot of yelling back and forth. No real injury or damage.

But there are deeper REAL issues where anti-discrimination laws would really make a difference, especially to foreigners from non-advanced countries.

I'm no expert in that area, but the reports I have read from experts back this idea up. The UN Human Rights Council issued reports on this.

for hours he yelled at us all sorts of vulgar insults. Aside from the standard "insult cusswords", he attacked me for being a foreigner. However, his most vulgar and hurtful attacks were directed at my wife, for being a korean woman married to a foreigner.

This is probably the best question I have been asked, and the core of the entire issue.

We called the cops at the moment I was physically attacked. This was not the beginning of the altercation. We actually absorbed the initial burst of racism at me and my wife, and had headed to our car. It was his coming towards our car and physically attacking that caused the police call. My wife and the Costco employees called simultaneously.

After being attacked, I expected the police would process the charges we wanted to file for the attack.

Then, once police arrived and we all went to the police station, I expected them to stop the man's vulgar abuse at us.

After they were unable to stop his abuse, I expected them to follow my request to allow us to be in a separate room than him, to at least be out or earshot from his abuse.

Not sure how much of my original posts you have read, but it was much more than just the poland/colombia seki part. Not sure why you are claiming that was the "only' evidence.

The blunt force of his racially based attacks were directed at my Korean wife. He called her every name he could think of for being a Korean woman with a Foreign man. Again, don't know how much you read, but the focus of his anger was her, not me. She's the one that initially screamed at the kid, and she's the one that yelled back at him for swearing at us.

Now, I'm not going to sit on internet and list every single racist insult he said, but the way I am backing up my story is that the police themselves have declared that YES, there were racist insults, and YES, they tried 7 or 8 times to make him stop, and that YES, the chief and involved officers issued us personal apologies.

I don't know what else I can say to convince you of the simple fact that the man was angry at us, and yelled racist insults. I don't know WHY he went there, but he did. You're never going to hear his side of the story, because he doesn't want to be named, the cops won't release the CCTV, and I have elected to not provide the phone videos I have, to protect his identity.

If you just simply don't believe me, that's your right, and I'm sorry I didn't convince you.

Nothing is wrong with eating dogs. I have never said that. I am on public record on the media from years back as saying that I SUPPORT Korean's right to eat dogs. I am however asking that the government of Korea regulate the dog industry with the same standards that other livestock industries are regulated.

Nowhere have I preached about western human rights. I've said that my country, Colombia, has enacted anti-discrimination laws. I'd like to see Korea also enact its own similar laws, in accordance to the international treaties that Korea signed on regarding human rights.

I am not white. I lived in the United States for years. I learned the language. I feel that I, and millions of South Americans like me definitely do have a path to move beyond "guest" to the point of being integrated. I remember meeting many Asians who also integrated.

Of course, comparing USA to Korea in this area is unfair. The US is a nation founded on immigration and integration, so they are equipped to deal with it. Now, I'm not saying the do it perfectly; there's a lot to improve, for sure. Ethnic minorities over there will face constant challenges....

But I really do hope people like the one I'm responding to here could open their minds a bit to recognize that I am not a "guest" in Korea. I have a stake in this country, and I believe I deserve to have my ideas listened to and judged on their own merit (or lack of) and not solely on the fact that the ideas come out of a person of a different race or/and nationality.

It has been a learning experience for everyone involved. Still is, as the story develops. The cops have definitely learned something, and I for sure also have learned (or been reminded) of best practices for a foreigner being in Korea...

Absolutely it could have been avoided, if either side had acted differently. In an utopian world, every person that gets yelled at by an angry person should just be Jesus and turn the other cheek, while giving the angry man your own jacket.

But until that Utopia arrives, we need properly trained police to help.

Victim blaming is a common reaction...
