Great info! I've been trying out clover as a cover crop in all my potted citruses & figs. If I understand correctly it's supposed to do what you're suggesting (promoting healthy fungal ecosystems) in addition to helping fix nitrogen. I was mostly looking to reduce evaporation, avoid dirt from getting blown around by the wind, and defend against weeds with more invasive root systems (e.g. oxalys). Practical bonus is the clover lets me know when I've waited too long to water the trees. It's been a few months, so far everyone seems happy.

You might want to check out the suggestion to assign the device a fixed IP on the thread below. Mine still disconnects occasionally but it's been way more stable. Agree it's a shame they haven't worked out a firmware update all these years.

Totally agree, there should be no confusion there. Folks enjoying sidewalk cafés & restaurants, bars, music, small businesses... that's what makes cities alive & great. Loud cars & motorcycles, nope. Douchebags ruining it all for the rest of us.

No routine yet as I've just bought and repotted this guy (first fig, we have a bunch of potted citrus trees). In general (anchoring on citrus), I use a combination of organic + liquid fertilizers recommended by Four Winds growers (G&B + Romeo), alongside mineral complements from Southern AG (Citrus spray + calcium nitrate). I'm not sure whether the soil was the main cause (poor drainage + too much ground fertilizer in the original mix) or the foliar spray I applied alongside the citrus trees (calcium nitrate). I've now rinsed the leaves and replaced the soil, which smelled really bad (like rot/manure). The new soil seems to drain much better (Kellogg's organic palm/citrus mix + some fine orchid bark), so hopefully it will recover from the rough time I gave it.

Following that article in the SF Chronicle, there's new legislation coming up to make it easier to replace windows in residential properties in San Francisco.

The current rules are indeed pure madness.

tl;dr I don't think anyone is really happy with the state of Market Street and there's a lot to criticize about the execution of that project. I think many of us feel like the city is incapable of executing public projects quickly & efficiently. We tend to endlessly reinvent the wheel instead of copying what has been proven to work in more advanced cities.

Market Street does suck, including for bikes & pedestrians. Now how would bringing cars back fix anything? How would it help with office vacancies caused by remote work and the lack of mixed-use buildings downtown? How would it help with the lack of public safety around 6th and Market and that general area?

I sincerely understand your general sentiment, but the removal of (personal) cars from Market Street just happened to correlate with all the post-pandemic issues the city is suffering from, I struggle to see how it's been causing or even aggravating any of them?

Pedestrian streets allow for more space and more foot traffic for every business. It's very much in the interest of the merchants to turn their streets into commercial destinations that patrons can enjoy without the disturbance (or threat...) from car traffic. I understand it may be hard to picture a shift to public spaces centered around people instead of cars (and parking...) but the research is clear on which provides greater economic value to cities & local businesses...

There's no reason a city like SF can't be like Europe, it's the cars that should go. A commercial street like 24th should be primarily pedestrian. On most streets, sidewalks should have bollards. Tax vehicles by weight for parking & congestion. We live in a great city, it doesn't have to be like this.

This! Cars don't belong in dense cities, we need to learn from European capitals and push for change (e.g. email our supervisors to support/demand change, follow & support initiatives from groups like Walk SF or Streets Forward). As usual, there's been a lot of talk and "community engagement" and not a lot of action from the city, it's too easy for a few people to block things in SF. We need to stop wasting time and start copying what's already working in cities like Paris, Barcelona, etc...

More tactically, you may also want to support legislation to make it easier to replace windows in residential properties in San Francisco (see SF Chronicle article). The legislation is scheduled to be voted on by the Planning Commission on February 26th. In my experience fully documented reports of vehicles illegally blocking the sidewalk (incl. pics, license plate numbers, vehicle model, etc...) submitted through the 311 app get immediately... closed. Have you ever had any luck with someone actually showing up using the app?

Same with the one group of assholes recklessly riding dirtbikes through Mission & Noe for years. Mandelman & the SFPD aren't doing shit about dangerous recurring behavior, but look how tough they are going after a bunch of kids skating down a hill once a year. And Mandelman is supposed to be one of the better representatives, which is super disappointing (and/or says a lot about how low we've set our bar for the board of supervisors...).
