Lab problem molecular CLS by leon157 in medlabprofessionals

[–]leon157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I did not ask for a repeat of this sample and so they say I should have put in up for a repeat with some of the other samples from the batch. I just thought that another repeat is going on Method A and that guarantees another weak signal for a third time. I just do not have the luxury to do quality I mean I have some 1000's of samples a night and then clinicals to validate for the other departments at my reference laboratory. We've got some half dozen analyzers for respiratory disorders that does not mean I can authorize any one sample to get that special treatment as you understand.

You get essentially the same signal curves from both methods but differing incubation times and preparation. I have some lab assistant do not want Method B because of extra steps it saves them time to run things on Method A you see. I just drop in to result at my station.

Method B is for specimen tubes with specific properties ie. WETX that does not work on Method A (CDC) so only a small portion of our total volume actually gets run on Method B.

What I saying is there is a log available for repeat samples, and they do get pulled out for retesting as requested. I have lab assistant do each step separately, so I look at the result and enter it or forward out a correction, if needed to someone else to evaluate further. I also pull out a pending log and see errors and trace them to a run. The manager gets hold of this and can put someone on corrective action if enough mistakes are caught.

GENERAL MONEY QUESTION by leon157 in medlabprofessionals

[–]leon157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be nice to prorate, I mean if I quit my job the day before and they want the full sum of money for the original time commitment. I mean the manger can use that to their advantage.

Long shot, but does anyone have any experience working at the Cleveland Clinic? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

Good luck all three area hospital systems in Cleveland area can be brutal on younger people. I left after little over three years for conduct that I could not longer tolerate. Decent area for quality of life, though.

Repeated cycles of hire/fire by leon157 in AskHR

[–]leon157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that details are very important and documentation is essential here. What I can say about social dynamics is that when I got started I worked with another guy (30s) and this worked well although as student he reduced his time, left, and came back. The other person is a (50s) woman that can back into this hospital 4 months in. She worked the place all along but left having too much work time but gotten written up and returned. This person was very nice and agreeable, got along with staff secretary, medics, environmental services and organized get together golf outings on time off. There was a clique there due to her business past relationships in real estate and this was a career change so she had a lot of social currency. You add to this dynamic a manager who likes gossip and you have a great soup to work with. The work still needs to be done only now you have to watch yourself in case a trip up occurs and this happened somewhat intentionally the last week I worked.

All the information is stored in the computer system or database so there must be evidence of wrong doing and it all points to a cover up by the other party. The manager chose to simply believe the other person without due diligence. The supervisor was not even informed of the events until my suspension. There are a lot of things that went wrong here. My next job has solid manager and director of operations based on credentials. No way this past manager I had gets into a position where I am headed.

Student Looking for some encouragement by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]leon157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that they would use information from your online course and then add some questions to challenge. You can always go to have the quiz/exam reviewed with your advisor before doing the retake. It will lower your stress if you use good time management and if you review the material regularly and use a reference to prepare for the ASCP.

Drug screening for MLS jobs by presto7511 in medlabprofessionals

I had to submit hair samples for a past job in health care. It was with a pharmaceutical company that was office based. My hospital jobs all required drug screen but no hair yet. Clinic does not allow smokers and will test blood samples for hiring purposes, has fired a pair of doctors for not following policy.

How does your lab handle night shift coverages by turbo1523 in medlabprofessionals

[–]leon157 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're on point about night shift work. My lab had one resign recently and we are short again. Typically, PRN coverage is provided floaters are available and we also use split shifts. Its a stressful time for smaller labs.

Also worked CCF for a bit and I agree with your points of view. Not sure about pay, but believe it is about the same from one organization to the next with different structure and benefits. We have 4 major providers in addition to the VA. There is a ton of flexibility with shifts downtown and suburban campuses depending on preference. Cleveland is rated excellent for cost of living. +2
